@naayou - im here to learn. She referenced "the only Soviet backed /socialist government after the ottoman exit" . Is that Egypt/nassar/Arab nationalism? Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm curious as to why she glazed over that without context- (It was early like 8:00)
@stuartnorton64059 ай бұрын
Also- I am one of those folks that thought this was a shia/sunni conflict. No? Where do I find out about "sunni sects that are theologically closer to shia." ?
@naayou999 ай бұрын
@@stuartnorton6405 that is not the case. Zaidis do not fully align with the Shia sect. In Yemen, society is not divided strictly along sectarian lines. Personally, I come from a background that blends Sunni (with a Shafi'i father) and Zaidi (from my mother's side). The issue with Yemen primarily lies in the North, which is in a dire state and wields significant power. Many members of the army and security forces hail from this region and are Zaidi by sect. These regions are also high in illiteracy rates. Maybe the worst in the country. However, this is only part of the broader narrative. The Houthis, who lead, are Hashimites, and there is widespread disdain among Yemenis towards the Houthis for their elitist stance-stemming from their lineage to Muhammad and Ali; they think they have Godly mention to lead. This has spurred a rise in Yemeni nationalism that opposes such attitudes, including among Zaidis themselves. Yemen's situation is distinctly different from that of Iraq and Lebanon, where Shia communities hold a strong reverence for the Hashimite lineage. The US administration could potentially facilitate the downfall of the Houthis by supporting those dissatisfied with Houthi ideology-and there are many. The bombings have, paradoxically, lent legitimacy to their cause, a fact known to the US administration. This leads me to question: Does Biden truly intend to weaken them, or is he assisting them inadvertently? Thank you for your inquiry. It's important to recognize that mainstream media often seeks to manufacture consent rather than inform, as Chomsky has repeatedly pointed out.

@19:00 small correction, the Taliban are Hanafi with deobandi origins not wahhabi. The custom of a people is taken into account when arriving at ruling within the madhab(legal school) the reason they appear so strict and are probably confused with wahhabi's is likely because they implement(often inappropriately when applied to more metropolitan areas) the rulings of the school based on their own rural pashtun customs which in those areas where the Taliban originated is likely not a as much of an issue.
