I may have missed it, but I don't think it was ever mentioned here explicitly, that Pappe is Israeli! That may be obvious to some but probably not to all. I think it's important to highlight when Israelis contradict the dominant narrative. Whether they be scholars like Pappe, peace activists, or even victims of the Oct. 7 attacks. There are cracks in the facade. They give me hope.

Jerusalem’s Deputy Mayor Arieh King tweeted a photo of over a hundred naked Palestinians who were kidnapped by IDF , handcuffed, and sitting in the sand, guarded by Israeli soldiers and called it a “Hamas roundup.”. However turns out the men and children in those photos , as young as 13 years old, were doctors journalists, shopkeepers , and other civilians who had sought refuge in UNRWA schools in Beit Lahia. They had been arbitrarily kidnapped and separated from their families which all is a war crime. Deputy Mayor Arieh King wrote that “The IDF is exterminating the Nazi Muslims in Gaza” and that “we must up the tempo”. “If it were up to me,” he added, “I would bring 4 D9’s bulldozers, place them behind the sandy hills and give an order to bury all those hundreds of Nazis alive. They are not human beings and not even human animals, they are subhuman and that is how they should be treated,” King said. He ended by repeating Netanyahu’s biblical Amalek genocidal reference: “Eradicate the memory of the Amalek, we will not forget.”

I need to get Ilan Pappe's books. As a college student I became interested in diving deeper into understanding how my people were ethnically cleansed and through my access to J Store at the time I gained access to various documents and articles not available to the broder public. Much of what I read in those research documents echos what Ilan speaks of here. One of the catastrophic loses for the Palestinian people was Sheik Izz Al Deen Al Qasam, who would have played a crucial role in uniting the people under one banner. His assassination by the British was significant in helping to keep the Palestinians from forming a joint, singular, well organized resistance to the catastrophe that would unfold in 1948.

Colonialism = the subjugation of others for the express purpose of domination by another. THAT is human history in a nutshell. We have devised no end of mystical, religious, and political mythologies to "paper over", rationalize and excuse that unpleasant reality, and to describe the human species in much nobler terms, but a brief overview of our contemporary world is a physical refutation of that self-aggrandizing mythology. The billions-year-old symbiotic interaction of the natural world stands in stark contrast to humanity's frivolous arrogance. Human Exceptionalism is as poorly founded as racism, misogyny, and the "divine right of kings". As a species, we are "believing" ourselves in to extinction.

Can we watch our self-destruction on the basis of conflicting beliefs and practices when each clan has to observe its own time-honored values that preach respect for mankind. Hello to Dr. Pappe. Your videos are amazing and I highly regard every single one of them. However, one thing I can assure you (referencing the 5:20 min mark of this video) is that the Canadian government, when it comes to the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis IS STILL AT IT AS WELL. It's not as overt, but it is here. Our country's institutions, our political pandering, our educational, police, and justice systems is still entirely infused in a colonial framework and thus it is STILL doing a great deal of harm. Some people here call it institutional racism and it is evident in the marginalization, the abject poverty, and the extremely poor health outcomes of Canada's Indigenous people. Unfortunately, soon as the term Institutional racism is used, the ears and hearts of most mainstream people become closed. They don't want to hear about settler colonialism of the past NOR the subsequent institutional framework that is still here. Sometimes in discussions I wish I had better descriptors to use (because the first thing that happens is people want to debate the validity of these terms). But whatever we want to call this colonial framework, I'd argue it is not only still harming the indigenous people but it is also harming every single person here in Canada. Gang violence, domestic violence, missing and murdered, high employment rates, and much more. Most Canadians seem to be fixated on the high costs of the social programs required to off set the situation. But, the HIGH COSTS of the extra "welfare", police officers, jail guards, social workers, parole officers, and the new and latest "community safety officers" is the LEAST of my concern. We also have uniformed "security officers" popping up at almost every large store or public space. They are everywhere. What worries me, is the WHY that more and more of all of these seem to be needed every year. Not to mention how far too many people are quick to blame the Indigenous people for their "moral failings" or for the "degradation" of society. It makes me quite sad sometimes that people don't see that the key isn't hiring more police officers -- it would simply be to stop the marginalization and racism instead. I don't know. Sometimes I feel crazy. Haha. That was, before I found your videos that is. They are bringing me some peace of mind that perhaps I am not crazy after all. They bring a lot of optimism to me actually. I hope you see this and know that your life's work is, for as frustrating as it sometimes must be, one of the greatest gifts humanity could ever receive. Hope for peace! Thank you.

Pappe mentions in passing the unconditional support of imperialism for Israel but doesn’t say why they do this. This is missing in almost all discussions on the topic. Pappe says it was to “solve the Jewish question in Europe”. Really? What of Britain’s calculations of the benefit for its empire in the Middle East. US imperialism’s goals were made plain by Joe Biden made it plain in 1986: “It is time we stopped apologising for our support for Israel. It is the best 3 billion dollar [a year] investment we make. Were there not an Israel the United States of America would have to invent an Israel to protect her interest in the region.” kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIqvf3aZgct8oa8 The Middle East has oil and gas reserves, as well as the Suez Canal, is of vital importance. Vietnam was never of geostrategic importance to world capitalism. At 46:00 Pappe says political Islam arose because the “crisis of modernity in the Arab world, the modern secular movement failed to cater for the needs of people, were not about to deliver on their promise of liberation, economic justice and so on. So people were trying something else.” He misses two things. Capitalism could never allow “economic justice” and fundamentalist Islam was supported as useful tool by Zionism and imperialism.

The Ottoman Empire made the Middle East a colony. The British Empire continued after the defeat of the Ottomans, that is, Turkey, in World War I. Jews immigrated to the area as private individuals under the colonial rule of those Empires. When the Brits planned to leave, there was no government to take over, and it was the United Nations that proposed the establishment of two states, one ruled by Arab Palesinians, and a second state ruled by Jewish Palestinians. The Jews agreed to the plan. The Arabs said no and went to full war.
