Long reining is used to prepare the horse for carriage driving or any kind of ploughing, forestry work where he is required to drag something behind him. It is also a useful education tool for a young horse before riding so he can learn about the aids coming from behind, we can take this onto going out and about for walks to get him used to the human world. In high school dressage long reining is used to show off the movements of the horse without the rider he can even show more brilliance in the piaffe, canter pirouette or levade for example.
For the rider it is a great exercise to learn about using the rein aids while staying grounded and centered plus the posture ( how the body moves ) in turns, halts and transitions which should be the same when we ride as when we are walking. It is also an invaluable way to develop our feel and timing because we can clearly see what the horse is doing and where all his feet are.

Great video! I just got a pony as a companion for my young colt and we have mastered regular lunging and im looking forward to progressing in long lining to give him some variety in his exercise 😊 I lived in El Puerto de Santa Maria for 3 years and miss Andalucia dearly. Thank you for your videos!
