Pete, I'm disappointed we're not getting a full month countdown of 2024's best albums. Was looking forward to that all year. Still excited to see your list, but I would encourage you to bring that back next year. I think it's a great capstone and highlight of the year and it builds excitement to stretch it out over 31 days.

This was a year without a real favorite. Liked lots of album but none that really floored me. Just good stuff. The three albums i came back to the most are: Big Scenic Nowhere - The Waydown The Polvos! - Floating Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere Song of the year: High on Fire - Burning Down. Love that monster! Discovery of the year: Black Sabbath's Tony Martin era and Y&T's classic 3 album run.

i love lots of metal, thrash and black metal, but 99% of the stuff he mentions i never like. i feel he just comes up with all these weird bands and band names, just to be different and "cool"....it's gotten annoying with him and Karen always talking about subpar stuff that no one has heard of, and then isn't even that good....just wastes everyone's time, listening to them talk

I bought 53 albums albums this year, so I'll list some great ones further down on my list, so as not to spoil my top picks... Colossal Oppressor - Ten Ton Slug (Sludge metal from Ireland - contender for best album cover of 2024) Gates of Obliteration - Antioch (Canadian NWOTHM, very prolific with no dips in quality) Astral Iron - High Warden (Fantasy inspired Heavy/Doom from Germany. On Dying Victims label, who release a ton of quality stuff) Quintessence - Valley of the Sun (haven't heard a soul mention these guys, but they're metal/psych/groovy/stoner...just plain awesome)

My favourites for the year 10. Hell Fire and Damnation - Saxon. Biff and his cohorts deliver the dog's bollocks and then some. Punchy massive sounding production, fist pumping riffage and master at arms Biff belting it out with clarity and conviction. It's Sneap's best production of the year. The album warrants all the accolades it has been garnered. Hell Fire & Damnation is pure British heavy metal. It's unbridled joy executed flawlessly. As Brian Blessed would say "Saxon's alive!", and the world is the better for it. 9. Ocean Without a Shore - Weather Systems. Expectations were high and this release delivered in kind. For those mourning the absence of Anathema, Daniel Cavanagh gifted us with further musical meditations to elevate our emotions. He has the uncanny ability to take a single melody and build layer upon enticing layer. In theory, this repetitive process shouldn't work but due to the quality of execution, it blooms. Ocean Without A Shore is a transcendent and compelling jaunt. Joint 9. Here Comes the Rain - MAGNUM Magnum's swansong studio album was a bittersweet affair for obvious reasons. As with all their albums, Tony Clarkin's mark is all over this, a mastercraftman solely driven to serve the song. With Sir Bob pouring rich nectar into the ear, the album like all their discography, sounds quintessentially MAGNUM. This is the album I've played most this year. It remains a poignant finale. Here Comes the Rain will always draw a tear as we mourn what we treasure, and in their beloved discography there will always be a wealth to treasure. 8. The Last Will and Testament - Opeth In a few months this might be alot higher but I've had more time with the others. It's heavy, it's progressive, it's bordline pastiche. It's a love letter to Åkerfeldt's record collection, and their mightiest release in decades. 7. Invincible Shield - Judas Priest I really didn't think they could match Firepower and they have. This is a beast of an album. No weak tracks, at least three soon to be classics, peppered with hybrid glimpses to previous eras, roll on the Priest. Many parties, will have this topping their lists. I understand that. Like a glamour model, all the curves are in the right places, the skin is supple to touch and it's easy on the eye. But for me, once ventured, it holds few secrets. Invincible Shield is without question a magnificent heavy metal album, perhaps somewhat diluted by it's predecessor, but the ears yearn for more. Joint 7 (another Catino, sorry). Live in the Wires - Frost* This sound of musical alchemy most cunning and euphoric. If any albums harnesses ear candy bliss better, I'm yet to hear it. The albums creates soundscapes sublime. The best progressive rock album of the year (bar one). 6. The Theory of Empitness - Evergrey No surprises here as few bands are more consistent. Evergrey sail towards a new direction, a more commercial and anthemic approach, and the whole exercise sounds grand. The band expertly utilise light and shade and the result borders on the transcendent. The album is the audio equivalent of a Christopher Nolan film, smart, bold and vast but emotive remaining tethered to the very personable. Impressive stuff, indeed. 5. Charcoal Grace - Caligula's Horse. Of all the albums this year, this has grown on me the most. Every time I listen to it, it appears to creep higher in my regard. Brooding, atmospheric, and abundant. With Haken, this shows them to be the torch bearers of progressive music progressing. Soaked in rich musical passages, complex never decadent, Charcoal Grace allows the listener to bath in it's elevated execution and equally be excited for what is to come. 4. Eli: A Wonderful Fall from Grace Another massively accomplished release from down under, Scandinavians be aware. In terms of vocal harmonies, bright sounding melodies, accomplished musicality and superior songcraft, the album is hugely emotive and lifts the listener within reach of sonic euphoria. Melodic, hooky, diverse arrangements, soaring solos, the tightest of the rhythm sections, exquisite vocal delivery, lush instrumentation, it's all here. The vastness of the audioscape achieved is remarkable. This work of wonders warrants more coverage, in better and just worlds this is huge. 3. The Empyrean Equation of the Long Lost Things - Vanden Plas More ambitious than previous releases, another impressive statement from Vanden Plas. Virtuoso playing with more expanded passages than usual without diminishing the song. Power metal that's progressive, poetic and accomplished. The Empyrean Equation soars to incredible heights and shines brighter than a vast majority of this year's releases. 2. The Mandrake Project - Bruce Dickinson. Bruce and Roy Z pull out all the stops to deliver music theater that's varied, challenging yet accessible, energetic and hugely fun. The album's best summed as a music box full of treats with plenty of method behind the madness. Bruce takes center stage and it's glorious. 1. Absolute Elsewhere ~ Blood Incantation. Death metal growls + a battery riffage and drums + early 70s Floyd = Pummeling psychedelic cosmic Shangri-La. Just experience the trip! Honorable mention Zenith - Stormborn Zenith is high octane melodious metal that reminds you why you first fell in love with the genre in the first place. It has all the tropes of the classic mid 80s played with such conviction and execution, you can't be help but be won by their enthusiasm. The production is not overbearing, the sound feels authentic and energised. The songs are dripped in melody harking back to early Dickinson Maiden with dashes of vintage Metallica. The seeds of British New Wave more cultivated. Musically, there's little to fault here, the rhythm section are tight, the vocals are robust and ideally suited, and the guitarwork is exemplary. Kudos to all! There is genuine understanding of songcraft here in terms of the choices made. I do hope this young band keep persevering, they are gifted with a maturity surpassing their years. If you're tired of metal because it sounds generic and uninspired, just go out and buy Stormborn's Zenith. At thirty nine minutes the album never outstays it's welcome, you'll have it on loop. Friggin' fall in love with metal again!

Two yrs ago I probably had 20 new albums. Last yr it was around 25. I pledged this yr to get at least 31 new releases so that i could fill out the entire month for pete's countdown...and then he decides not to do the countdown...but i still ended up with over 50 new releases, and that's not even including EPs, live albums, etc...I'm still gathering my list together, but I'll give you three albums that I love, in no particular order...from 2024: Achelous - Tower of High Sorcery Hands of Goro - Hands of Goro Traveler - Prequel to Madness
