Saw Maiden in Warsaw on Sunday night. Blood Brothers, Ace's High, Hallowed, Fear and and my two favourite Blaze era songs went down extremely well. If it's what people want to hear, and the stage show matches, well nowt wrong with that. Saw Priest the month before at the Mystic Festival. Sure, I've heard Breaking the Law and Living After Midnight 000's of times since they first came out, but for casual fans, they're songs that they're going to recognise. Bear in mind, that BtL and LaM are encore songs. (They played Rocka Rolla & Turbo Lover mid set!)

That's true. Some people go to shows all the time and have been for decades; for others it's a rarity. For the latter, they want to hear the classics and would be extremely disappointed with a show featuring unusual deep cuts. This setlist though puzzles me, since Maiden seems to be fully aware that most people that go to their shows don't want to hear new songs (Bruce even says "I promise, no new songs!" sometimes), and Senjutsu wasn't well received, particularly not that sorta milquetoast country western-esque song they released as the first teaser for the latest album. Soooo many people heard that and were crestfallen. The rest of the album was better but I don't need to hear anything from Senjutsu live or studio. It's not a terrible album but it's a terrible Maiden album (I haven't listened to it again since it was released; didn't plan on not listening to it again but the fact that I never did speaks volumes).

I think the reason why Blood Brothers is so overplayed by Iron Maiden is that Steve Harris is emotionally attached to that particular song. He wrote the song when his father passed away and it's about the experience of losing one's father. It's been said again and again that Maiden's setlist is dictated by whatever Steve Harris wants to play, and additionally management mandates several live staples by contract. This is what it is.

Brilliant show as always guys! Great and interesting choice for discussion. For people like us who have been Maiden fans forever, everything you all said was spot on. What I would add to the mix is that bands like Maiden get first time fans at every show, especially older fans bringing their kids to the show for the first time. My daughter went to her first ever show on The Book of Souls tour. I absolutely loved it as they played loads of new tracks, and my daughter loved it too, but was a little disappointed as a load of 80s hits were missed off. I guess it's a real balancing act, especially on the hits tours to satisfy both demographics. I'm totally onside with you guys, newer fans, maybe not so much? I guess for newer fans, imagine going back in time to your first ever Maiden show in the 80s? That's the experience (or close to), that they get. That also gives them longevity getting newer fans on board I guess?

One note on a current band, Ghost had been playing their cover of Enter Sandman at all shows this year.....complete waste of precious setlist space for one of the most overplayed songs in history. The good news??? is that at their most recent show (Hellfest in France) they dropped it and added Griftwood from the new album. Fingers crossed that they keep it that way on the upcoming U.S. Tour.....can't wait for August 26th in San Diego!

I sympathize with that feeling that you're one of the only fans at the show that wants to hear deep cuts. I saw Gang of Four in the 90s, and watched them play a stunning version of the song "Anthrax" to an indifferent audience. but when they played their hit "I Love a Man in Uniform" the crowd went nuts. You guys must have all loved the Nostradamus tour then! That tour was my first experience seeing Priest live. I got free tickets, so I said why not. I waited all night to hear Living After Midnight...crickets. The only song I recognized that night (admittedly, I know Priest WAAAY better today than back then), was the only song they did for their small encore: You've Got Another Thing Comin'. I felt ripped off, even though I paid nothing. :) If there was a silver lining, they played a song that apparently they had not played for a while, called Rock Hard, Ride Free. I had never heard the song, but it was so memorable live that it led me to explore Judas Priest's catalog further. Fortunately, I was able to see them again with Deep Purple years later, and that show was epic. Total redemption! :)

Great show, and you guys already picked most of the songs I can't stand either, however, here's a few more that were missed in my opinion: 1. Metallica: Sad But True (never, ever, ever, want to hear this song played ever again, period!) 2. Megadeth: A Tout Le Monde (always went to grab a beer or t-shirt when this song was played) 3. AC/DC: T.N.T. (I know they have to play it but it's so overplayed I can't stand it anymore) Lastly on the topic of Maiden, it would be so nice to see them bust out songs from the first two albums, or even say Somewhere in Time, or one of the few good songs off No Prayer. I was able to see Bruce on his speaking tour this past March, and a lot of the questions he was asked was about their setlist being the same old songs... would be nice if the band actually listened to the fans.

Haha good picks on this. A big one I squirm at is the old chestnut that every band ever has covered at least once and that’s Born To Be Wild. Several years ago even Anvil started encoring with that and it was “Nooooo!!” from me. It was a big encore from BOC in the 70’s and that was cool because it was just before other bands found it. Then BOC would encore with another uber-overplayed number, the immortal Roadhouse Blues which is just a waste of concert time to me, good Doors tune but not one I ever want to hear at a show. In 92 I was against the stage in front of Lemmy and they played Hellraiser which was an Ozzy tune first though yeah Lem had a hand in writing ok. But there’s too many MH songs they could play instead. Then they go into Cat Scratch Fever and I lost it. The mushrooms didn’t help. But I yelled out “Play Motörhead songs!!!” as loud as I could. It was so annoying they’d play that, bad enough it was on an album of theirs.

You're so right about Blue Oyster Cult. I'll never understand how that band toured arenas for so many years with only THREE songs. Multiple members were living in Stamford, Ct. at their height so maybe there were some shady backroom promoter deals struck with Vince McMahon?

The biggest hit by Rammstein, "Du Hast" is the song I never liked, and it's the biggest crowd pleaser I can't stand. Interesting topic, I was just looking at Slipknot's set list for this tour and there are a lot of songs they are playing forever and I was literally like, there like almost 75% - 80% songs I wish they would leave alone, "Spit It Out" and "Surfacing" are the first, I'm sick of hearing them, "Wait and Bleed", "Psychosocial", "All Out Life", "Custer", etc.

I am going to Priest and Maiden in NY in October. I have seen Maiden just once before on the Book Of Souls tour and I have Priest about 4 times. I do not need to hear Living After Midnight nor Run To The Hills again live. I would love to hear Dance Of Death and Necromancer.

Funny Show guys, but you are killing me. Firstly oohhhh to be somewhere where you can see your fav bands all the time to the point you get sick of seeing them play ANY song. Secondly the reason I'm a metal head in the first place is I heard 'living after midnight' on the radio in 1980 (or maybe saw on TV) as a 14 year old so immediately went out and bought British Steel and Stained Class and never looked back, before this I was into AC/DC, Deep Purple, Status Quo etc. Thirdly I still love 2 Minutes to Midnight and Hallowed be Thy Name, both 5 top Maiden songs and they are my fav band of all time. Penultimately can I say I actually like the "Whistle Song". And lastly, yeah we all get sick to death of songs because they are overplayed by everyone else, but I cant hate a band playing it live and you know that of course the average punter wants to hear it at the concert. So funny, highly entertaining show guys. PS Pete, don't ever get rid of the HVS from your programming. PPS, To get around this playing the same old - same old I went to a Midnight Oil concert once (final ever tour... until the next reunion tour) and they had a spinning wheel with their entire catalogue on it and just spun the wheel and played whatever came up. Excellent!

To Chris' point, I don't like the pace they play Hallowed Be Thy Name live with Nicko. He is an beast, but he plays it way too fast. It kills the dynamics and that anthemic pace. There's none of that "2-hands-swinging-the hi-hat" that Clive did. The Maiden song I'd drop would be Fear of the Dark. Even though Trooper, Hills, Number, IM are played far more often, I understand the reason why they do those. But FOTD?!!? In its place, they could play both Evil That Men Do + Flight of Icarus (to name 2 hits , but still not constant on the setlist) which are way better.

Clive was a freakin' monster drummer. I was fortunate enough to see IM on their 1st North American tour, with Di'Anno, and Clive Bunker was a goddam beast! That band was never better than that tour for me. Young, raw, savage and hungry. It was metal-changing. It was life-changing. Up the Irons!

The rolling stones, satisfaction, even if they just had a break from it for a while. I have a video I've had for years from the steel wheels tour, Stones at The Max, I think it was the first thing shown on an Imax cinema, the last track is satisfaction and it is 12 mins 45 seconds long, oh dear that riff just goes on and on but it seems all the crowd want to hear it. Saw then in 1999 and a guy shouted, ive come all this way and they're not gonna do satisfaction, I knew they'd do it for an Encore.

Maiden should revamp their entire show. When they did the 7th Son setlist tour I was disappointed. I never want to hear them play Aces High, 2 Minutes To Midnight, Evil That Men Do, Iron Maiden, Fear of the Dark, Sign of the Cross, Wicker Man, Blood Brothers, Prisoner, Wasted Years, Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter, Can I Play WIth Madness... stay away from all of those. I know the last few aren't played much, but they haven't aged well. I feel the opposite about Priest. I have always loved Living After Midnight (1st real rock song I learned on guitar) and could drop Breaking The Law and You've Got Another Thing Coming. AC/DC should drop You Shook Me, Thunderstruck, Dirty Deeds, Shot Down In Flames and Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be. The first two are just for the soccer mom crowd. I liked them for a long time, but want some variety. The last three are just staples they always play. They've been done to death. Add some songs from Flick or Fly or play Ballbreaker or Stiff Upper Lip. There are some deep tracks from both the Bon and Brian era that could be done.

I agree with the comments about "Maiden" the "Trooper" and "Fear of the Dark" are annoying, there are so many great songs to choose from, but I guess they stick with "what works". One band that kept their live set interesting and would surprise us , was Rush.

Rush was always known for shuffling the setlist around quite considerably for each tour, often featuring many deep cuts in their setlist. I think with the exception of Tom Sawyer and maybe Working Man, Rush never had a live staple to speak of which they absolutely had to play each show. I wish all bands were like that, and I think this is part of the reason why Rush was such an amazing band live, as each tour was a whole new experience.

@@stanferraro4130 Unfortunately most concert goers are casual fans who just want to hear the hits, and not the hardcore fans who drool over random album tracks.
