I remember being a kid, not even behind the wheel and this bridge still haunts me. You should never feel a bridge wobble.

Wow, what an improvement. That used to be the scariest drive in the city with its two narrow lanes, no shoulder and two-foot-high guardrail.

major600 Yes, they did a nice job with it. Thank you for watching!

2:53 The dark shaded area used to be the width of the entire 2 lanes before they widened it. The center lane was pushed over. Such a fun panic anxiety inducing ride it used to be.

I thought I was going crazy... I specifically remember that bridge being two narrow lanes wide, with no shoulder, and a sharp traffic shift in the middle. Google informs me that it's since been widened (I last drove on the bridge sometime in 2000). Thanks for posting. :)

Definitely not the Huey P that I remember driving. I was sitting here going, where's the traffic circles, the narrow lanes and the sudden little "s" turn just as you crossed over to the East Bank?

Yes, the lanes used to be 9 ft wide and the bridge was hated by locals. The current configuration is very nice, indeed. Thanks for watching!

unless you drove this bridge in the narrow form before before they widen this bridge you are not a certified Huey P long Bridge driver

wow yeah i randomly thought of this bridge now its 3 lanes looks like a breeze! I had to drive this everyday from westbank back and forth with a gigantic dodge ram and I was the asshole who took up both lanes looks much easier now!

You're not a certified unless you've had your tires bounce off the guardrails, in pitch black, at night, doing 60 on the old version. I used to work the 2 am shift at Fedex on Jefferson hwy WAAY back in the day. Fun times.

Same here. In rush hour traffic, with a train crossing at the same time, it was scary as hell!

Night and day difference between how it is now and how it used to be years ago. My brother used to refer to crossing the Huey P as "jumping the dragons tail" 😂 Scariest driving experience of my youth...by a considerable margin

I lived in Avondale in the early 80s. No one mentions how raggedy the overpass at Westbank Expressway is. It seems to have a very noticeable sag.

hey, maybe you might remember...what was the name of the old, old "tourist court" motel that was right off the bridge? Near the old traffic circle? It had a big old metal and neon sign like an arch at the entrance.

The HighwayMan What did you mean by the 'bump' in the center of the bridge? Please reply me.
@cochrab
@cochrab 10 жыл бұрын
Many bridges in this area have a raised section in the center to accommodate large boats. The raised section would be what I was referring to as a "bump". Because of the railroad, the bridge is flat. To see a bridge with the bump, see my Lake Pontchartrain Causeway video.
@00crashtest

The HighwayMan I see what you're talking about. However, it comes as no surprise that this bridge doesn't have a 'bump' because the approach sections have already done the job. From my experience, most arch, cantilever, cable stayed and suspension bridges don't have a 'bump' (with rail or not). I think the Lake Ponchartrain Cause way was not a fair example because only a small part of the water needed to be a shipping channel. However, in this bridge, as in most other strait or river bridges, MOST of the river needed to be navigable due to its relative narrowness. Therefore, there's usually NO WAY for the 'bump' to be ON TOP of the water. If the bump were on top of the water, then the vertical navigational cleatances near the edges of the shipping channel would be too low. So, is there any clearer explanation you can give me? Thanks. :)

Wish there was a pedestrian & bike track element to the bridge. And the bridge has no lights. El puente necesitas luces para el noche. Ojaga hubiera para que la gente caminara y ande en bicicleta.
