The failings of the mechanical shark Bruce forced Spielberg and crew to re-write the original shooting schedule and made for a far better film. Not seeing the shark early on in the film made it a hell of a lot more terrifying.
@lyndoncmp5751
@lyndoncmp5751 19 күн бұрын
Bit of a myth that, I'm afraid. Bruce wasn't scheduled for the first half of the film. The shark was hidden by design early on and the land based scenes were filmed more or less on time. There was no way to use Bruce in the shallow waters where the beach scenes were filmed, so they never intended to. The beach scenes were filmed in May and June 1974. Bruce was never scheduled to be used until filming went out to sea for the Orca based scenes in July. That's where everything started going wrong and hardly any shots of Bruce were got until nearly September. This is all in The Jaws Log and Memories From Martha's Vineyard. Unfortunately the various documentaries confuse the issue and exaggerate it.

Favourite scene is Holiday Roast 😂 the jetty being pulled off and then slowly turning and creaking, the music so we know it's the actual shark, the sheer panic when he can't get up and then the comedy element "Can we go home now?" Brilliant! Watched film 100s of times, still love that bit 😀

I read the book for the first time a few years back. This is one of those rare cases where, in my opinion, the movie was better than the book it was based on. One of the two biggest issues was the whole mafia subplot, Mayor Vaughn's involvement with it, actually bogged down the book considerably, and, I'm glad it was excised. The second biggest issue I had with it was all the main characters except for Quint we completely unlikable. The fact that the shark wasn't working for most of the shoot actually made the movie much better. Most of the attacks you couldn't see the shark, and that helped add to the suspense. What you don't see can be far more terrifying than what you do see, which is the approach Ridley Scott used in ALIEN, barely showing the titular creature at all until the final showdown on the Narcissus.

When a character says something inaccurate, like the date of a ship going down, you could consider he or she an unreliable narrator, and not necessarily repeating a mistake by the screenwriter. People make mistakes, characters make mistakes.

When the shark starts ramming the hull right after Quint's speech, the blows are rapid-fire. In quick succession. It's like Jaws has two big arms doing rapid left-right punches! Lol. The only way the shark could be ramming the hull is with his nose. Just picture it hitting the boat that quickly. He must've looked like Woody Woodpecker down there! Lol! The shark could only ram once, then swim away to gain speed and THEN hit a 2nd time. He couldn't bust thru the hull in quick succession- BAM BAM BAM BAM!!!

Shark fishing was a thing before Peter Benchley wrote the novel he was reading an article on fisherman catching a big great white shark the biggest one on record which showed a picture of the shark thus created the novel and idea on what if a big shark decide not to leave the area,what was in books on sharks was limited even when some study sharks many knew nothing about them,in the summer of 1916 shark attacks plagued New Jersey for 12 days the experts didn't believe sharks could bite through bones and skin 5 victims of shark attacks in 1916 it was the hottest summer on record 100 degrees a sea captain seen a shark swimming in the creak the towns folks laughed and called him a drunk old fool did not believe a shark could swim in a creak as it was unheard of what they fail to realize is that half salt water and half fresh water,they never caught the shark or sharks as it was believed to be more then one how ever a fisherman caught a shark open it up and found human remains.Peter became advocate for sharks as he during that time thought like Matt Hopper does all shark do is swim eat and make baby sharks mindless eating machines.

Love it, but don't understand why they changed the script because the real shark tore up the underwater cage. In the book, Hooper dies, but in the movie he lives. Why not just keep the footage of the shark tearing up the cage, with fragments of Hooper's body (mannequin) floating about? Not to be gross, just making a point.

Why does the decapitated head come floating out of the submerged wreckage? Some weird current? Why does it have a missing eye? The shark's mouth is way too big to somehow nibble out one eyeball out of its socket with no other damage around it. So, something else must've ate out one single eyeball after just one day.
