Off topic, I'm pretty sure Danny Boyle was inspired by this video when directing 28 Days Later. Similar shots sequences of London The lift sequence reminds me of the movie Angel Heart where Jonny is on the lift decent to HELL! The Human League's most underrated single for me. It's completely synth pop genius. I always could have seen New Order doing this track for some reason but without the warmth of The Human League's vocals. Bow Down ++++++ I also relate tot he lyrics so much, the sentiment is perfection. It's been a a favourite of mine since 1984 ****

Lyrics Winter is approaching There's snow upon the ground It's good of you to visit me I'm glad you came around I don't know how you found me I didn't let you know I only moved to this address About a week ago I guess you think I ran out But that's not true Other people settle down I never do I always have to move on Just have to go I've often wondered why that is I'd like to say but I just don't know I guess you always wanted Life on your own I guess you always wanted Life on your own Up here the summer's shorter And winter's very cold I'm looking forward to the peace My lonely life will hold I'm really glad you came here Thank you for the talk It's funny how my problem stopped When we went for a walk Standing here together Means so much I won't forget your confidence I won't forget your touch You know I'll come to see you Passing through We'll always be a world apart I'll travel on but I will be true I guess you always wanted Life on your own I guess you always wanted Life on your own I guess you always wanted Life on your own I guess you always wanted Life on your own

There is, definitely. It can only be found in a relationship that will not break down, and that is with Jesus Christ, as I've found. If you call out to Him, He will answer you. "He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation". Psalm 91:15-16

A beautiful, poignant, sad song full of pathos concerning the breakdown of a relationship and the singer's inability to hold on to it. Very telling lyric: "It's funny how my problem stopped, when we went for a walk", and the concluding line about being true, in view of his partner's search to find and recover lost love. Still brings tears to my eyes when I listen to it. An extra verse would have been a real treat, but hey, we can't have it all!

Why, I don't know, but this song moves me to tears. I guess it's the very real pathos expressed in the lyrics about the apparent hopelessness of the man's situation in his supposedly not being capable of holding down a relationship and his attempting to escape from it all, and leaving behind a partner who loves him and wants him back again. He is eventually found by the resourcefulness of said partner and perhaps deep down he realises that he is in denial of his latent ability to have a loving relationship ("It's funny how my problem stopped when we went for a walk"). Yet the final lyrics seem to say that he will not change for the better at all. That is the sad situation that he finds himself in, as I see it. Such a deeply moving song for me, perhaps it echoes periods of extreme loneliness in my life. Who knows? P.S. I just realised that I wrote about this song two years ago and my comment from then is still there. Forgive me for repeating myself. What might you think of what I have just added?

I always felt that the Human League's massive success with the 'Dare' album in 1981 badly cruelled them in terms of their next album's success. The natural rush to follow 'Dare' up with more product yielded some terrific stand out singles in 82-83, some fine B-sides plus a good reissue of an earlier song. When the 'Hysteria' album was finally released in 1984, it contained some excellent songs, but the album as a whole was not a patch on 'Dare'. It lacked depth and unsurprisingly, it enjoyed far less overall success. Imagine for a minute what MIGHT have emerged if the League, after 'Dare', had held out, then released 'Hysteria' in 1984 with all the post-'Dare' singles & superior B-sides replacing the weaker "Hysteria' album tracks. This is my view of what 'Hysteria' could have looked like, song by song......1. Mirror Man, 2. You Remind Me Of Gold, 3. I love you too much, 4. (Keep Feeling) Fascination, 5. The Lebanon, 6. Life on Your Own, 7. Louise, 8. Betrayed, 9 The World Tonight, 10. Being Boiled (reissue). All this is great post-1981 material which would have made a ripping follow up album, with success rivalling that of 'Dare'. What do you think?

After Dare the Human League couldn't do anything to top that masterpiece. Even if Hysteria contained their best work I doubt it would've had the same impact. Either way the Human League weren't harmed by the huge success of Dare and and the perceived failure of it's follow up, they're still releasing top pop music in the 21st century.

I just think that a) there was no topping Dare, and b) time had moved on without them to a degree. Not saying they didn’t do some excellent post-Dare stuff, but like a lot of the top electronic bands of the late 70s & early 80s, they struggled to find a new identity and sound once that pure electronic age had lost it’s cutting-edge.

I am a 41 single man, tried to start some relations in my life, but for one thing or another, I guess I always wanted life on my own... Modern times are not the best for long relations in any case.

In '88 we divorced,my love of my life back then, and I.I remember playing this song time and time again after that, and 'Louise'.I didn't like those NewWave bands of the early eighties that much, because I grew up in the sixties and seventies. But nevertheless the Human League became thus a part of my life.I'm still moved everytime I hear this song.Great.

I WISH, I WISH, I sooo WISH The Human League would put Life On Your Own in their live set. It's simply incredible, the singles from Hysteria were simply stunning. If New Order released this track in 1984 it would have been seen as a classic. But we all know The Human League are better, Life On Your Own is a CLASSIC. I adore the lyrics and relate to the whole structure of the track. Synth Pop Deep classic xxxxxxx
