Horrifying lack of understanding in this comment section. Skin color does not determine genetic heritage, despite our categorization of "races" based on skin color. That is this man's entire argument. People are grouped by race FIRST, and that's the problem. Two people with black skin can be demostrably shown to have less shared genetics than a black person and a white person or any other "race". They're not a race, or group or really share any physical commonality beyond skin tone and skin tone does not determine shared genetics. They look the same. LOOK the same.

Race is not based solely or even predominantly on skin color. People who think race or racism is "only skin deep" know nothing of history or biology. Different ethnic groups and different races literally have different bone densities, skull structures, forearm and shin length, toe and finger length, body mass indexes, proclivities toward diseases, etc. Hell, even skin color itself isn't just some incidental genetic drift... Lighter skin tone literally became 100% dominant in landmasses furthest from the equator, like Europe, because that lower level of melanin, AND OTHER DIFFERENCES IN SKIN COMPOSITION, permit for a much more efficient utilization of sunlight for the production of vitamin D and Testosterone. People with very dark skin living in northern climates literally have to take pills to avoid serious illnesses caused by the lack of sunlight hitting their skin.......

Point 1- He repeatedly says Rushton claims you can predict individual characteristics solely from one's race. Rushton in fact and throughout his work stresses the opposite- that these genetic qualities are normally distributed (bell curve) throughout populations, and should never be used to assume anything about any individual. Are we supposed to believe he doesn't know that? Point 2- See how blithely he dismisses the point about the ease of fact-checking the startling twins statistic (32:14). If we started to do that, these bogus racialized claims would never end! No need to establish the truth in any of these matters, because see how these "truths" have been twisted in the past. Such is how ideology corrupts critical thinking. I urge readers to check how Rushton's work is sourced and decide for yourselves. That is, if the veracity of that chart even matters. I think it does.

@santoud4 жыл бұрын
The Doc says that there is variety in nature, than he says that the variety in humans is explained by human constructs (afirmation) ... so is there or not any natural variety between humans or is it all just our imagination? If theory of evolution is right than there is genetic and phenotypical variety amongst humans, no? If the theory of evolution doesn’t apply to humans than we are the exception. I understand that ideas on race are constructed by humans, but saying that there is no amount of variety in human biology that explains some of the differences seems to be absurd, it dismisses the theory of evolution as beeing false … Another problem: the examples that you showed are USA examples, thus a majority “white” country. That we observe that people prefer those that look alike is just an in-group bias that we see in all countries in the world. Chinese people have Chinese beauty standard, as do Japanese with Japanese standard and Nigerian people with Nigerian beauty standard. This only demonstrates that there is an in-group preferablity and bias that we already knew existed in all humans. It was not so interesting, a bit disappointed that the arguments of Doctor Nengo were not so well researched, too much confirmation bias perhaps.
@RBEmpathy4 жыл бұрын
I don't think he was saying variation doesn't exist at all. I think he point was that, genetically, we can't really justify the use of the term 'race'. Also, what 'differences' are you talking about? Are you one of those race realists who assert that IQ test gaps and physical performance gaps and crime statistics all arise from genetic variance? Because that's absurd.
@santoud4 жыл бұрын
@@RBEmpathy Well I hope I am wrong. I'm just suspicious because American anthropology is moste of time very ideologically oriented and as he seems to discard proof for differences in human population, it was pointing to me to some kind of ideological bias. Let alone the confirmation bias on the data for black arrestation in the USA without using other data that can explain better, like criminality rate in the black community, a multivariable analysis would certainly be more nuance than juste a binary one and would show different interactions with different corolations. Well known data withholding that contradicts his thesis or give more nuance to the problem doesn't help his case. Americans still invening stupid stuff in the field of anthropology, what is race realist now ? I only care about data and proof, the scientific method is my mantra. If the data goes against my belief system, than I should change my belief system. But with new data and more research we can see that evolution applys to humans too, and even though we have complex social interaction (culture, tradition, ideology, etc) that doesn't make us less animals on the contrary. There's clearly human variations, there is no denying it. Does it count for some differences that we observe, absolutely ! How much ? We don't know ... more research is needed. What we don't need is ideology stopping our researchers doing their job because of wrong think. Anthropology will always be a hot topic, because it sees humans as animals and nothing more. People think that they are special and that natural deterministic laws don't apply on them. Well science says they do ... even today my ego is fighting this truth, and it realy pains me to say it.
@laughingachilles4 жыл бұрын
@@RBEmpathy Then the doc needs to speak to more geneticists because we can determine a great deal about race from genetic samples. Why do you think a persons race is a part of the organ donor criteria? It's because there is more likely to be a match between two people of the same race than two people of different races. We can track different haplogroups to show how humans migrated out of Africa. We can identify hybridization between denosovians, neanderthals and humans and how certain groups possess more contributions from these species than others. As for race realism, I must admit I'm very much on the fence regarding IQ as I have read papers from both sides which seem to contradict one another. What I would say is that the people who simply throw the argument away are often doing so out of an emotional reaction to the idea and not a scientific one. For example you mentioned that physical performance between races isn't based on genes. Well I'm sorry but that demonstrates a gross ignorance of the science. Why do you think nearly all of the Olympic sprinters are black? It's because there is a difference in fast and slow twitch muscle fiber which is genetic and varies between races. Why do you think east Asian people are often unable to tolerate alcohol to the same level as Europeans? It's because of a genetic difference which resulted from adaptation. Why do you think sickle cell disease was almost entirely limited to black people? It's because it is an adaptation against the parasite which causes malaria. Now as we can prove these differences I fail to see why intelligence would be exempt from genetic effects. Again I am not sure which side I land on at this point because of the contradictory studies, but to label the idea as absurd is simply not scientific. I'm a biologist (yes really) and I know many of my colleagues will say one thing in public and another in private in regards to this issue as it will immediately result in accusations of racism and the end of ones career. It's frustrating because science is supposed to be about evidence, but the history of science is studded with examples of emotion preventing good research.

Races do exist, though the lines between then have blurred in modern times. Genes can be traced back to the root ancestral groups. If a person expresses the phenotypes of a certain ancestral group, they are said to be of that race. No race is superior to any other. However environment does impact the different races in different ways. Whites have difficulties living in Africa. Blacks have difficulty living outside of Africa. The United States is a very racially diverse country. The disparity in outcomes that we see are largely the result of gene expression.

If we analyze the human genome we will see that we are one race, with small differences observed in the different population groups that make up the human species, and that the differences between individuals that are part of the human species/race are , biologically, a result of the most different processes of natural selection that have occurred on these groups throughout the world and times, and of course the cultural aspect - yes, the human is a cultural being - which reinforced these distinctive external (physical) characteristics, attributing to them a value judgment - good/bad, right/wrong, better/worse -. Brains, in this process, develop plasticity and different neurophysiological functions in these individuals, but they continue to be brains of the "homo sapiens" species and of course, it all depends on what you mean by "race".
@straighttalking20903 жыл бұрын
You say 'the human genome' as if there was but one, but every individual human genome is different. You say 'race' where in my vocabulary the word for that of which you speak is 'species'. I think the term race is a good-enough stand alone definition in general biology, just as the word green if fine in a general sub classification of colour, you may then want to sub classify 'green' to emerald etc (if you want to see an interesting link of the two topics in the English lexicon google _sub classify 'green'_ ). The world of DNA is almost infinitely more complex than the wavelengths of the visible spectrum. I think the difference of opinion in our use of 'race' is semantic. You speak in social sciences language - I speak biological. 'Race' is fine for any zoologist until you come to humans and then the word becomes taboo as if we are not subject to evolution. My thoughts are based on a lifelong interest in natural history. The word race is used in all of my field guides for the class birds, reptiles, mammals etc and down into the orders (and below) except for one order.. primates; in a beautiful identification tome I bought recently there was one species not listed in the index.. you may have already got it - humans. If you want to speak the language that speaks to the hard truth don't go with the social sciences.
@luisaugustobonilha82103 жыл бұрын
@@straighttalking2090 Thank you for your opinion, and what you say is just a confirmation of my opinion. The human species works and acts transforming culture into real biological barriers, so there is no way to talk about the concept of races without entering what you call the social sciences. Genome is by definition the genetic profile of a species, and in that sense, the human species - barring small group differences - is a single species. I do not discard the concept of race as a differentiating element of groups of the same species, I just understand that it is necessary to be correct in its interpretation. I do not understand race as a subspecies for the reason stated above, which is genuinely biological. This is so true that You can selected a handful of people in any corner of the world that you will have all the genetic variation of the human species preserved in that group. When it comes to race as a subspecies, there is a great risk of classifying it within social and cultural parameters, and ending up classifying them equally as better, worse, superior or inferior, based on cultural and not genuinely biological experiences, and that is the risk. Race is a useful attribute from a biological point of view to point out physical external differences resulting from selective pressures - yes I believe in evolution - and cultural ones too, because throughout the history of our species we have always wanted to "differentiate" from other groups - the multiplicity of languages is nothing other than the need for "no" to be understood by the other group - and this, in my opinion, is where the danger of "races" and the risk of what you seem to call the "hard biological truth" lie , even more knowing that we can find more similarity in the genetic profile between a human and a chimpanzee than between two chimpanzees.

@Sephiroth Hojo Genome is not genetic. In a very didactic way species has gene sequencing which is not to be confused with the genetics of the owners of a species. Cultural conditioniong, vaccines, GMO and the person itself.

@Noble Thomas Environmentsal differences, overtime, result in different races. We've seen this happen time and time again in animals throughout biological history.

IQ as an overall intelligence metric has been rejected by the very guy who created the idea. ...Keep that in mind.

How do YOU the increase in the overall IQ of the population ? I am open-minded to racial differences between humans, but I couldn't find a clear answer to that yet, but it seems to be the thug culture idk.

How do you explain surviving in the savanna with no modern weapons ?

Human is a species not a race they have there various root races, sub races, sub sub races, and mixed races
@DaduaMaiga3 жыл бұрын
race is a social construct not biologically, since all living humans today are pretty much the same and belong to one specie which is Homo Sapiens, the oldest bones in Britain called "Cheddar Man" had dark skinned because humans evolved in Eastern Africa and migrated to different continents, Science estimated the pale skinned didn't evolved into modern humans till around 7000 years ago, When modern humans left Africa they encountered and interbreed with Neanderthals which is why Europeans have average of 2-3% of Neanderthal DNA, Homo Sapiens today are so genetically close to each other, out closet living relatives were chimpanzees because we last shared a common ancestor with chimps 7 million years ago, which lead to other hominids such as Australopithecus Afarensis the famous specimen known as "Lucy" which lived 3.2 million years ago in Eastern Africa and was the ancestors of all living humans today.

@@DaduaMaiga You're telling me that a dark skinned human made it to Britain during the iceage? You're out of your mind, and whatever scientist claimed that is a racist.
@liteney3 жыл бұрын
@@DaduaMaiga Humans did not migrate out of Anatolia/Turkey into Europe because of the iceage. There was walls of ice and glaciers covering Europe, humans could not access Europe. Yet you claim that somehow a magical dark skinned human made it to Britain? Not just Europe which was covered in glaciers and walls of permafrost ice, but somehow he made it to Britain, which was under glaciers, mountains of ice. What did this magical dark skinned human do, take a jet to Britain? Insanity... pure insanity...

Sometimes whats sadder is our relatives, seniors, ancestors in some cases think this information or presentation will change the nature and the once well hidden mindset and actions of "certain," groups. Ive learned through experience that some information until they realize how deep the structural racism is, can be potentially dangerous unless you are encompassing all the factors and have common sense to assess the real facts. The struggle isnt real, the haters, jealousy and racism is. Thats all. The orchestrated struggle here is just from petty people wanting to cowardly beat up on people they wouldnt dare say to their face even in a weak beat down state that they have a problem with you. If you got to use half your police friends to start ish and then run to the military to try and finish your setup, you are a coward and a true female. Oops i vented again!

Compare the environmental differences between the two continents while comparing the single standard difference between the light and dark cognative potential and the answer will be obvious.

So Koreans and Irish are the same race?
@psychicspy Жыл бұрын
@skp8748 Depends upon your definition of "Irish" or "Korean". It is possible to have Korean ancestors and yet be considered Irish or vice-versa. People like to refer to "the human race" which doesn't exist. All modern humans are members of the human species and within that species, there exist distinct groups of humans that share common physical traits. Those groups are commonly referred to as races although the group lines have become blurred by the movements and mixing of those populations in modern times.

@skp8748 Average? That would include people living in Ireland who may have been born Irish, but are genetically closer to people found in Asia. You are not asking the right questions.
