The combine is, no joke, probably the worst and most evil dystopian empire ever put into writing that I know of. They make the Borg, Gilead, and 1984's Oceania look like, I dunno, open democracies or some shit. Those are just autocracies bound by the Earth or a space-fairing hivemind that's kept in check by more than capable futuristic tech. The Combine are literally multi-dimensional and bring the pain instantly anywhere there's an opening, exploiting defendless civilizations that they conquer for resources as they drive them into a slow but steady extinction.

@mtZi they're all similiar in the sense that they utilize other species to convert into their ranks. Flood might actually be stiff competition because they utilize dead flesh and work as a hive mind. Where as combine use tech, brainwashing and surgical implementation. Flood might spread faster, since combine rely on living specimens and years to fully enslave a planet. It's hard to say, but combine do have wormhole technology, so you're probably right.

It is also not refering to "Combination" or "Assimilation", it refers to a combine harvester, harvesting planet Earth and by some extend our dimension. I'm not trying to start a debate, but talking about the Empire, it's a matter of perspective brought by the extended universe. Take Thrawn for instance. Ruthless as he was, he valued order above all else, and would take sly diplomatic action before brute force. The Emperor just wanted to weaken the galaxy by sewing chaos. You're absolutely right when speaking in the context of the Emperor. But the Empire itself was full of a wide range of ideals that clashed with the supreme order.

It's plausible, that stalkers are made only out of rebels, that aren't having much in terms of combat potential. Those that do are instead turned into soldiers and get to fight their former friends. You missed perhaps most terrifying aspect of stalkers - their higher brain functions are removed entirely. Unlike combine soldiers, that still retain their human brain, but with implants and brainwashing, stalkers have their cerebral cortex removed, leaving them only animal-like reactions to their environment, a bit like zombie, when not ordered to do anything. They are literally drones at this point. Because of that, they usually are supervised by soldiers.

For instance, Uranium-235, which is an isotope or differnt version of Uranium (235 means the number of electrons the atom contains), takes 700 million years to reach half of its radioactive power. Thus, Uranium-235's half life is 700 million years.

I think it's pretty interesting how after seeing everything the Combine's been doing to humans, it becomes more apparent that all the synths the Combine uses like Dropships, Gunships, Striders, and Hunters were likely all at one point their own individual species that got repurposed by the Combine. Depending on whether or not they're the overlord species this could've happened to the Advisors too, with them having all their extraneous limbs removed and becoming entirely dependent on their Combine prosthetics and psionic abilities to do anything. I would like to mention that continuing on the topic of Half Life's Combine, doing a video on the Combine Advisors might be pretty interesting. Or maybe doing a video on the sentient aliens from Xen like the Vortigaunts, Alien Grunts and Controllers, and Nihilanth who all seemed to at least be partially related to one another.

Marc laidlaw made a twitter and there he explained alot about the advisors. Basically advisors are a really old species that know everything about the universe, and so the combine tried to capture them and have that knowledge to take every dimension, but he says that the combine couldn't get these secrets because the advisors had done something to not let them do it, but the combine still used them because they are the most inteligent species known, the only one behind is the human race. But Marc Laidlaw explained that the advisors can take on any form they want to once they get out of their pods and be born. The form they have before they are naturally born is the slug thing we see in episode 2. Marc Laidlaw basically implied that the G-man could be an advisor and his employers are the rest of the advisors that don't work for the combine. There is a youtube video about it if you search.

a small note about the intro. The Combine aren't much interested in the rest of the galaxy. Thing is, they're not from the Milky Way. They're not even from our universe, they're from a different universe entirely. They're also interested in some of the earth's scientific discoveries because for all their advancements and all the species they've conquered the Combine can't make Intradimensional portals, only interdimensional. They can make a portal that will carry people and things from one universe to another but once they get to a new universe they have to use the local systems of transportation. In other words, the aperture science dual portal gun? The Combine don't know how to make it. The teleporter that Alyx and Gordon use at the start of HL2, The Combine don't know how to make it. This is why they kidnap Alyx's dad. So they can make their own portal machines so they can travel around faster.

You know what I've always wondered? What was the Vortigaunt home planet like? They're not from Xen, they moved there in a last ditch effort to escape the combine, along with the rest of the species from their planet, according to Doug Lombardi/Mark Laidlaw. Considering the vorts' bodies and weight and stuff, though, I keep trying to imagine what the original planet would have been like for them to have 4 eyes, 3 hands, hooved feet, and a hunched head. Oh also, a fun fact about the Stalkers, they used to look so much more horrifying. They had masks covered in blood and rust, and cage gags that forced their mouths open. Their bodies were a lot more atrophied and rotten-looking, and their torso underneath their ribcage was nothing other than their spinal column.

Part of what makes the Combine both fascinating and terrifying at once is how inhuman they are in every way, shape and form. They are illusive, and most of the time we don't ever actually see the Combine themselves but rather the effects of their oppression. The Overwatch soldiers turned to their side, the stalkers, the death of the entire ecosystem and oceans being drained. It gives the Combine this aura of being more vast than we can imagine. They're not even an extraterrestrial invader - but an extradimensional one, hinting that they've already conquered most if not all of their own universe. To whatever governs the Combine, we are little more than ants inhabiting what they think is their new backyard.

Servitorhood is a punishment in 40k. Most are made from clones grown for the purpose and have their ability to have or form memories completely removed simply because more efficient use of the space is preferable. The sections of the brain are often never grown in the clone, and in those cases they are it's very common that they would be removed to make more space for metal bits just as part of the standard procedure. The ability to feel pain is often also removed from clones as it serves no purpose. Great efforts are taken to ensure these clones never were people and never become such because of religious beliefs. Though occasionally one slips through and then we get Heresy... For criminals however... Some times efforts are taken to erase the person in the conversion, other times special efforts are taken to preserve memory, self awareness, and their ability to perceive the world around them as well as to preserve their memories before, during, and every day after the procedure. Top that with the fact pain is left in for those made from criminals and... Well you can see where it goes. As their new existence is a carefully tailored form of endless suffering from then on. If you're lucky the tech adept might disconnect a few extra nerves disabling some of your awareness beyond what was prescribed on accident. Servitors also tend to be maintained and kept alive for hundreds or thousands of years, whether or not they were criminals and layer on all that pain and imprisonment in your own mind and body for such a long time and... Just hope you get assigned to dangerous work in a manufactorium, combat, or aboard a ship where you maybe get released through death any day rather than turned into a glorified type writer used to transcribe the discussions of the planetary parliament or as a wine pourer for some noble. The combine suppress your memories, but as a servitor there can be efforts made to preserve your memories to make the punishment all the worse.

I'm pretty sure that the stalkers have a basic version of what the combine soldiers have for the eyes. In alyx the combine masks upper part gets removed and the sockets are completely empty except the wires that lead to the brain so you can process what the camera eyes see. The stalkers eyes are either covered by light or the actual robotic eyes of the combine soldiers. By doing this the combine basically steal your eye sight by taking your eyes and replacing them with an extremely basic ocular cameras.

Well technically Gordon Freeman isn't coming back as far as we know. We see the moment Alyx meets Gordon in HL2 so she doesn't see him before that. So unless the rumor that you travel forward in time (fueled by the fact that Eli's new voice actor mimicked perfectly the final line of the cliffhanger of episode 2 and it is played in the Alyx trailer) is true, Gordon hasn't returned.

fun fact: according to Ted Backman the Striders we see are all fully synthetic, they were not born naturally but rather are imitations of the species, that means the original Strider race may well be long extinct. This is likely what would happen to humanity in the future had Gordon not returned; earth would be a barren husk guarded by a skeleton crew of machines and imitation humans as cheaply as possible, maintained with minimal resources and at best a fraction of humanity kept alive to do menial tasks until they die off, unless Breen managed to convince the Combine to spare humanity by proving that natural born humans make better soldiers and can behave well enough to be able to breed.
