Such a great video, thank you! A fully functioning person, according to Rogers, has the following criteria: openness to experience, existential living, organismic trust, experiential freedom, creativity (Englers, 2013).

8:30=> Question 1: Be true to yourself, seek knowledge and mutual acceptance, build a shared reality (alone and together) without limiting others and their perspective. Empower those that resonate, invest time and effort. Accept the true measures provide by the shared reality world. Each is 1/all where 1 is a subset of all and all is the super set equal to 1. The 'rest' is some/thing it is divided by culture/history, topic/mindset, specialty/evolution, organization/body etc... Everyone is an endless work in progress, be reasonable. Question 2: The combined environment and all those perspectives combined determine the local possibilities, people make choices within that field while observing/influencing it by choice for them(/self) and other(/self). This is a concept that needs more deep attention in the current global state.

Hello friend! Your thoughts are quite deep and enlightening. I encourage you to spread your thoughts and motivate/inspire people around you. If we all accept and care for one another, we can make the world a better place to live in our own lifetime. And the process always starts inside a person. You seem to have realised this. So you can help others do so for sure! All the best! :)

Good question worthy of a bigger discussion. self-image can change from being positive then impacted by events, conversations in life. So always changing as said. This then can lead to other thoughts on what to put forward to help increase congruence. So basically, I would say challenge some of the negative thought processes and make goals achievable
@MisterSimplify2 жыл бұрын
Good points, Karen. Self-image does tend to get impacted by events, experiences and conversations. One should therefore try to retain contact with positive, optimistic individuals, and reduce negative influences. This could be a way to challenge negativity and embrace positivity. 👍🏻👍🏻

Interesting vid, thank you. A couple of observations - I think Rogers was interested in the life process of becoming, rather than reaching a point of full awareness or self actualisation. I'm aware that he did recognise similarities between his own and Maslows ideas, but to suggest that Rogers endorsed the idea of a 'fully functional person', or that this outcome was 'really difficult', or that achieving this state is something 'not many can boast of' (and even if this state existed, I cannot imagine anyone needing to boast of the fact) certainly falls outside any of my readings of Rogers. Second, your presentation of his overlapping circles. He wrote, when presenting them, 'Any diagrammatic representation of complex material tends to oversimplify ...' and his naming of these circles were 'Self-Structure' and 'Experience' under the joint heading of 'Total Personality'. Your labels seem to suggest someting significantly different to this. I suggest that if you wish the simplest explanation ever, you might watch his introduction to the famous 'Gloria' vids and hear it from the man.

I feel that Roger's theory is a bit similar to that of Bronfenbrenner's ecological model to an extent, because they both express that the greatest external influences to the formation of personality are family, peers and other social interactions, in addition to ensure development there has to be an existence of an unconditinal positive regard.
@MisterSimplify Жыл бұрын
You're right. There is a similarity in the thought processes for sure.

I don't agree with self actualization, rather I believe in actualizing tendency, as its a never ending journey. I also believe for somone to say they are actualized, is most likely they are delusional. How does one know outside ones own interpretation and beleifs? If you say through others, then you reinforce the external locus of evaluation, better not to get caught on, 'if I have or haven't achieved it', Congurgence is a fluid thing. Rogers would use the tern actualizating rather than actualization, the clue in the word 'ing', a state of constant becoming.

Hello and thank you for this incredibly informative video. While I do agree mostly with the information presented, I also believe that a negative environment can force positive change because at some point, a person has enough and either does something to change their situation for the better or worse. I was doing very well until some recent things happened and the situation has forced me to change myself for the better. I'm improving myself physically and learning new things. Taking care of my hygiene better and exercising, taking care of what I own, and more. I'm on my way to better congruence.

@mrtambourineman61073 жыл бұрын
Pretty obvious isn't it?? They're completely different, I'll start you off with the obvious, one is free will based, one is totally deterministic...
@joannaoconnor94183 жыл бұрын
What does this mean for people who are really nasty but successful or vice versa?? How does the theory of self actualisation work then?? Or what if your goal is nefarious, do you achieve self actualisation even though your pursuits are malicious?? There’s a lot missing in this theory for me, it’s a bit too simplistic. It’s also highly subjective because it seems to adhere to so many social norms. This is a good place to start but it needs much more. In my humble opinion it lacks spiritual considerations. The goal cannot be dictated by human ideals because they’re so individualistic and therefore have the potential for exploitation. It’s still too much like a conveyor belt theory. There needs to be a connection to something much more sacred than the self.........
@MisterSimplify3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joanna. There definitely is more to be explored. The theory is certainly simplistic. No single theory can truly explain how self actualisation can truly be achieved. Such theories just provide some more perspective and help us explore further. In terms of your question, I don't think such people will achieve self-actualisation. If their goals were nefarious, they would know about it. We all know about a lot of famous / rich people who even went as far as to take their own lives. That's because they weren't happy despite the money they had. So yes, there are other aspects to self-actualisation like spirituality and happiness which need to be taken into consideration.
@joannaoconnor94183 жыл бұрын
@@MisterSimplify thank you for a very full and considered response and I would say that I agree with you 🙏 I have been taking part in compassion therapy and there is a definite spiritual aspect to this. For me it has proven one of the more successful therapies and so I believe that the connection to all things is perhaps the truest form of actualisation ❤️

That Matthew Principle that people who are more spiritual get even more and those with little end up with even less seems very harsh but I think it fits the internal logic of the New Testament. I ask myself can it be moral. Some times it seems to me that ordinary people can be more sympathetic than God. I guess that's why I've given up on religion.

A liitle peace within oneself perhaps but the journey is hard and gritty in parts. Rogers did suggest (and I'm sorry but I can't remember where) that in any dispute it might be helpful if one side could show that they fully grasped what the other had said before replying and vice versa. This might have been used in 1970's Northern Ireland peace talks or it might have been merely suggested. Sorry for the vagueness.
