I’ve been a therapist for over a decade now. I’m primarily mindfulness based in terms of technique or adding to what a person knows how to relate to their emotions and thoughts. But let me tell you, Carl Rogers is at the heart of any good therapy. His understanding of the human to human connection transcends his era or any other. We are deeply, deeply social and intrapersonal creatures seeking acceptance, understanding, care, and love just as much if not more, than knowledge. When in doubt, be Carl Rogers.

I would say, when in doubt take inspiration from Carl Rogers, but, to 'be Carl Rogers' would be impossible. In the therapy room, I want to be genuine. I am being facetious, of course. I am presuming you meant just that, too.

@@JoyRob1313 Oh my goodness yes!!!!!!!!!!! I would love to facilitate a Person Centered group and it is quite possible using the internet and zoom or google meet? Are you interested in participating? I have done a lot of these. So yes I can facilitate...I just need those who want to commit to a workshop. I would do the workshop as inexpensive as possible. I can do CEU credits for this. People would have to pay for that on top of whatever fee I attach. Usually the CEU's are like 20$ or at least that was the price. And I would do the workshop for like 25$ per head with minimum of ten people. We would have to figure out time zone too.........I am EST I would like to make this work...and from there anything can happen. 😉

Today I am a Masters Mental health counselor in USA. I got closer to you :) and even more to all yr teachings. Self Actualization of the organism is mindfulness. Is just go with the organismic follow and balance it without judgement or stagnation. Empathy is one of the most important principles that I learned in your theory when experiencing with clients. Yr essence still works among us ! Thank you for reminding us of being essentially more human. Or to practice who we really are ! Anna

I love PCT. As a MFT intern I am surprise how many professionals in the psychology field think I am strange for liking his approach. In my experience most people react favorably when someone is truly empathic and caring during therapy.
@nelsonferreira-aulasdearte
@nelsonferreira-aulasdearte 6 жыл бұрын
JOHNYCHINGAZ I did that approach and I'm now extremely critical of it. One of the main criticisms is that it's a bit fake! Also, Rogers ideas are hard to prove, seem simplistic to me and not sure if his approach is any better than just having a friend. Especially this thing of 'exploring self' and 'love self' is usually non-productive to loads of people and offers no real prognostic/method/strategies.
@jenniferhergert4447
@jenniferhergert4447 5 жыл бұрын
Your main criticism is that its a bit fake. I dont think that you understand that you werent supposed to fake empathy, you were actually to accept the person fully. Not approve of everything but be empathic about all aspects of their being. It takes some time and involves that you accept yourself in your entirety. I understand that this method is hard to prove, I dont get your other points of criticism. Some people coming to psychotherapy might not have a friend who unconditionally accepts them. I dont have data on this but I suppose many mental health issues may lead to or cause some kind of lack of support. One example of how this method may benefit the patient: I feel that you notice in a conversation if the other is uncomfortable with parts of your being and you tend to hide that. Hiding parts of yourself again leads to it being harder to solve. I dont understand why you feel that exploring self and loving self is unproductive to "loads of people". I've never heard of it being unproductive. Only if you know what your problem is, if you can accept it and still look into the mirror without feeling horrible can you start finding solutions and asking for help.

Person- centered therapy is the only form of real therapy. How can others be called therapies if they’re not person- centered? It’s respectful. And it requires a certain- alas, rare- qualities of the soul of the therapist i.e. healthy intellectual humility, openness, respect.

It should be "EMPATHY" centered therapy with each partipant empathising with the other family members not "SELF CENTERED" therapy.!!!! Empathy is the basis of drawing a person out of depression and frustration. "Being Yourself" is important but not if the self is a complete pain in the ass to everyone else.

SELF is the central developmental construct from which the theory begins, it is totally about the potential development of SELFhood in the other through compassionate empathetic dialogue. While it contains empathy, it does not revolve around it.

I returned all items to Rogers, have the receipt from Canada Post, made sure all items were in the carton, Rogers received the carton intact, and yet DAVE at Rogers, calls me a liar, claiming I did not include one item. Since I was not staying with Rogers, why would I keep the item I wonder. The first thing I think is, did DAVE keep the item for himself or sell it to someone else. Either way, Rogers is deducting funds for the item they DAVE states I did not return. Great customer service Rogers. And their security department does noting. Nothing. They don't even pretend to care, by taking report. I hope Rogers makes good use of the funds they are holding from me, based on the word of DAVE. Keep treating consumers like garbage under your feet Rogers.

He's entering into the client's experience with him or her, not making excuses or even agreeing. It helps the person feel not alone, more connected, respected, accepted. This allows them the freedom to move by themselves into other points of view and through feelings that were not understood. I think it would be best if you engaged with someone practicing the approach and fully experience it.

Where did you get that idea of PST from? Imagine a process where you are dedicated to honesty with a client. Why do you think you'd be saying yes all session long? I think this interpretation of PST assumes the therapist/counsellor is the expert who diagnoses the client - PST empowers the client to identify where transformation originates - spoiler, it's not in the chair opposite them..
