Near the UCLA Court of Sciences, there is a wing-flapping, darting, squeaking colony of 200-plus birds that make their home around the campus office of the “hummingbird whisperer,” as Melanie Barboni is sometimes called. For the full story ucla.in/2hqzz4R

lisainukacat You know, so many positive souls as you say exactly that " jewels" I'm going out on a limb( no pun intended) but to the Big Bang theorist's say from an inexplicable explosion all instantaneously from a particle??? It being an explosion and if you have been around one form or another, explosions cause CHAOS not beauty and certainly not ORDER as our solar SYSTEM. OK before I begin to rave heh heh the hummingbirds, came given over bazillion aeons ( made up #) and what we have is this evolution THEORY. Also we humans are moved with love appreciation & awe at such a creature, where and why do those non palpable abstract qualities called feelings originate? Unbeknownst to us our feelings were being molded from the chaotic explosion or BIG Bang, and we're stupid enough relying on faith in believing in a higher intelligence? It takes more faith to accept Big Bang theory tho not a fact. Well I Apologize for the soap box sermon. This planet is full of wonders and order. I hope didn't spoil your moment , yes jewels they are indeed &'they fly up down backwards sideways upsidedown At incredible speed they're pollinaters migrators of over1,000 of miles . Ciao for Now🙌

1 Colossians note verse 16. 3 We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, 4 Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints, 5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; 6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth: 7 As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ; 8 Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. 9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; 12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: **16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:** 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. 19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. 21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled 22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: 23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister; 24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church: 25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; 26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: 27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: 28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: 29 Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.

Lady Rainicorn And inspiring thnx🌼🌼They make us happy! Think of that! I recently purchased hummingbird feeder with doubts they would come they seem so rare a sight. Well put a feeder up THEY'LL COME. Its pure delight, I never tire of their presence. I created a beautiful feeder by arranging chandelier like hanging crystals ( buy at Walmart craft section, variety colors hanging below feeder arranged on 5" diameter brass ring, I know these flying jewels seem attracted to sparkling things. Then at a dollar store I found a tray with three sections, probably for snacks, a pink translucent color, and attached to rail on patio porch put wild bird seed in two sections & clear water in middle all are placed centered with hummingbird feeder hanging in middle. I have a large sliding door leading to small apartment patio. In morning I get my cup of coffee open blinds and the show Begin's .At first I thought the sparrows or finches would not coexist so closely with hummingbirds but they ignore each other the hummingbird is more territorial with its own kind. It a marvel of God's creation🙌

Sometime I reflect that our loving Good put them here for a purpose involving humans each in a unique way. Look at cats dogs ,& many others when treated with affection they respond, and even do crazy antics like they are in a way little toys we care for and delight in. And there are times they demonstrate intelligence that astounds us. The Aztecs of Mexico considered hummingbirds to be the most perfect creatures on Earth. In fact, they had such high regard for the little critters that they were the most sacred animals in their pantheon--above jaguars and alligators and sharks. And they were held sacred because the Aztecs thought all hummingbirds were the spirits of dead warriors coming back to Earth. Their most important and fearsome god, Huitzilopochtli, literally translates as "southern hummingbird."

David Meyer I get the same I went to Google ( don't we all?) to get some insight. They are not the most social critter now n then I get two feeding 180° apart. Hummingbirds migrate ALONE says one source and that's across Gulf of Mexico! They it appears to me to " bully " each other. Also I can't read those damn migration maps really you got to be preinformed to be Abel to, but my point is the hummingbirds in my area are here year round it appears. I was afraid my feeder impeded their migratory habits but source says they go when temp or instinct tells them, also the little gluttons keep feeding on proper flowers and pollination is unaffected so put up all the feeders you want, What a unique creature. They have brought me a lot of happiness I never tire of seeing them.Ciao🌼🌸🌹🌺🐤

Well they feed from flowering vines and certain flowers. We had a community of them by my house once my mother had some hummingbird vines and a feeder up, I got to watch a few generations of them grow up, fly south and come back to our woods in North Carolina sometimes losing some along the way (generally hoping they just paired off) They had no fear of us (me and my mother specifically since we spent time just sitting on the porch where the feeder was) and they would be friendly flying up to us sometimes perching on our shoulder or hats. They'd even let us know when the feeder was getting low by flying up to the sliding door till we came out, hover in our face, circle the feeder then come back to us and land on the clothing line to wait patiently for a refill. Only time I hated it was when the young ones would be chasing each other around and decide we'd make a great obstacle for their game of chase and come buzzing in at top speed so close they'd clip you nose or ears with a wing tip. The loud buzz in your ear was bad enough but the tickle of their wings would make you jump.

i love these little sweet birds as well here in vancouver. i call them Gods little fairies. they are truly amazing. and when they play and go after each other , its so fun to watch. your pics made me cry as they are so beautiful and perfect. i have alot but not as good a camera. always clean your feeder as it will make them sick and they will die ok. bacteria from their nails is left behind so please clean them often. and dont ever use the red dye formulas in the store to feed them as that kills them also. our water we drink isnt red so why would you feed it to them. they are very delicate little angels that need love and support from us.
@plumtucker6880
@plumtucker6880 7 жыл бұрын
" our water we drink isnt red" - we also aren't smaller then a human fist. Companies make the water red to attract more hummingbirds, which is an outdated practice. I Do hang up some red colored bubbles(not feeders) to get the humming birds attention be cause the tulips and butterfly bush is a bit hidden. When it's peak season I put a feeder out, because that's the time all the flowers are fading.

Plum Tucker Try orange 'surveyer's tape' from any hardware store to attract. I've been told it has ultraviolet properties that attract them to a feeder. It's about an inch wide and I would take a strip and tie a bow on the hanger or clothesline. Also the first hummingbirds I see here go to my Virginia BLUEbells so it's not just red that attracts them. I love this catalog although the prices are higher. www.plantdelights.com/blogs/articles/top-hummingbird-flower-plants-garden-hummingbirds-like www.hummingbirdsociety.org/hummingbird-flowers/ Companies produce that red stuff to make MONEY, they don't care what happens to the birds. This expensive stuff contains chemicals that prevent spoiling for those who are too LAZY to take the feeder down and clean. A dangerous situation especially in hot and humid areas. If one sees black mold growing inside it MUST be taken down and cleaned. I use a few drops of bleach and fill with hot water. Let it stand until no more mold remains then rinse, rinse, rinse. One can't be too careful! I put plastic parts in a bowl with a little bleach, sometimes taking the entire bottom apart to be certain it is clean. There are tiny brushes that will fit into ports. I don't use dish soap because I was told this can make the feeder leak. I do a sniff test and because I use mostly glass bottles I put them in the oven on a low temp to dry. When dry turn oven off and let the bottles cool before using again. My neighbor left her feeder up all through Spring and Summer and never cleaned it! People a couple of streets from me put up several feeders on a clothesline and each has a different color. I left them a note but they ignored it. You are so correct about planting for them. Monarda (bee balm) is also a favorite and there are many others. I used to have a webpage with some of them for my area listed. The more people learn from folks like you the better, keep up the good work!

Paul Newfield - Pasadena, CA. USA Quite honestly, I know little about the evolution of bird species. When I look at birds in taxonomic order, there’s a certain sense to much of it, but there are also weird jumps and realignments that seem a bit random. My brain does absorb weird random facts, but I often don’t remember where I learned them.

I would love to know how she manages to get them all to feed together. We have feeders all over our garden area and each one appears to be "owned" by ONE hummingbird. They have what we call "hummingbird wars" and won't let other hummingbirds anywhere near what they consider their own personal feeder. We never see multiple birds feeding in the way I see hers doing. What's the secret???

Si joli! Un grand merci!! Watching you care for these lovely jewels made me so happy too! I see that you are feeding them correctly with sugar water and no color in it. Happy Hummingbirds to you! For those reading, the commercial red colored mix gives them blood clots. Correct mix is 1 cup clean cold water mixed thoroughly with 1/4 cup white cane sugar. Keep in fridge, and refill every 2 days. Wash feeder thoroughly to remove mold and bacteria.

I encountered a lot of Hummingbirds when I lived in Cali, but they kept their distance. In Ohio, until last year, never encountered one, although I was told they are prevalent. Last year, while sitting on the deck one flew right up to my face and checked me out. I bought a feeder the next day and they have been hanging out seasonally ever since.

...well UCLA Newsroom...the FULL story is; Hummingbirds get their main nourishment from insects and small spiders...in between their hunt for bugs they get energy from sugar...then back to the main diet of insects...all day flapping their wings fifty times per second, constantly eating and drinking...Bird's Eye View

Dear Melanie I live in southern New Jersey in USA I have been feeding hummingbirds for years and suddenly this year I have hardly seen any and some of my friends have said the same!I am very upset and I think that maybe when the Zika virus was a hot spot in Miami the chemicals sprayed may have killed a lot of them?! They migrate between here the East coast and Florida, coming here for the summer .I hope it's not true and if you had the chance you could look into it 🌻

There is also news that the GMO used on crops is killing them along with bees and butterflies. I used to have corn on the cob every summer, but I read that every corn field in Ontario, Canada is now a GMO field. The selfishness today is out of control, and our food is just getting worse and worse constantly.

I guess she must be a wonderful woman and I do believe she loves theses birds, but I guess that put a feeder to hummingbirds is not a nice stuff. They can stop to visit flowers and so the polinization would be affected. Other thing is that these bird feeders must be very clean, or it could develop a kind of fungii that acts like a killer to these birds.
