This was rather useful. I am making an informed decision to postpone reading of the novel in favor of another classic but knowing the depth of what is eventually coming is comforting. Thank you!

I'm glad it was helpful! If I may ask, what did you decide to read instead?

The Hunchback is one of my favorite books of all time. 1) I don’t think Notre Dame should be rebuilt. It should be shored up as it is and left as a monument; 2) about 2 years ago I read in NY times a letter was found whereby this lady wrote that she had gone to the funeral of the rector of Notre Dame and that he was a hunchback, but beloved by all Paris. The funeral was overflowing with attendees in honor of the rector and his outstanding generosity. The point of this was Hugo was a frequent visitor to Notre Dame and the funeral was just prior to when Hugo wrote the novel. There was a long-standing Q of where Victor Hugo got the idea of a hunchback. Problem solved.

Sounds just like Moby-dick. With large sections of non-storytelling. But skim over it, and if you read it a second time it'll be more interesting. I think this is done on purpose; it's more content for an audience that doesn't own tv's or smartphones. Modern books are written much faster paced and it's in style to be as minimalistic as possible.

I never read the book. I’ve only seen the Disney movie from the 1990s. It’s my favorite Disney movie tied with Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Is it worth a read?

100% worth reading, I love the story, lots of emotion, can be intense at times. Agree with this guy's review too. A lot of people won't make it through the book because there are a lot of historical details especially about architecture. You just have to use some intellectual ability to get through it and is worth it for the story.
