I haven't seen this posted here, but this line about her relationships from the finale book always gets me. "That what I need to survive is not Gale's fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that."

If I remember correctly from the books (which I haven’t read in a long time so I may be wrong) Gale did know about the bombs and he even helped make the plan for it but he definitely did not know Prim was gonna be out there. In the books Gale is slightly more ruthless about Capitol people needing to die and not caring about their lives and it is a big reason he and Katniss separate from each other cus they did not have the same ideologies about the war and how it should end. The books imply that Gale was willing to stand with Coin but Katniss could see through her.

6:46 I really like what Katniss says here. It brings me back to the beginning, because we are also viewers, when we read a book or watch a movie, we want Katniss to win in the game (cause she's the main), get mad at the KIDS from district 1 and 2, call them VILLAINS, forgetting that they have been trained (to kill!) for these games LITERALLY SINCE CHILDHOOD, and in their districts they told them that it is a PRIVILEGE, that they should volunteer as tributes. Cato in the final scene with him himself says that killing is all he knows, that he only now understands what is happening. And a scene that is one of my favourites in the first book that wasn't included in the movie - after Thresh kills Clove (in the book it's much more brutal than it was in the movie), she dies in Cato's arms, he's crying and begging her not to die and stay with him. I remember reading the book for the first time, when I was 12 or 13, and it was after this scene that I realized that they are not emotionless killers, that they also have feelings, they were all just kids, not the villains, the real villains are only those who contribute to this horror and push the districts against each other

I agree but they didn’t fully translate the book to the film. I know it’s always hard to do so and they did a beautiful job with what they could but it would’ve been nice to have seen Katniss’s full struggle with her ptsd and depressive state. Since this was mainly for teens though it would’ve been too dark but my guess is that if they had been able to put that in the film Jennifer without a doubt would’ve been nominated for an Oscar

What killed me was the fact that all Katniss ever wanted to do was protect her sister. She never wanted to be in the games (obvi who does), she never wanted to be a symbol or anything. Just to survive and protect Prim and she dies anyway….

This book, Mockingjay, was the first book that ever made me cry by just simply reading words off a page....and that moment was Finnick's death. I had to put the book down and walk away for like 10 minutes to recover.

From what I remember, Gale helped create the idea of the bomb, but I don’t think he knew how they were going to use them. He created the idea that they make a bomb that kills the people initially and then when people go and try and help, the bombs go off again killing those people as well.

I'm glad you enjoyed the series so much you didn't want it to come to an end, maybe you would also be interested in other sci-fi teen movies by that era like Divergent or Maze Runner which are also well cast and very action packed. Ahhh so happy you finally reacted to MP2! Thank you! Your dislike for Gale in your reactions always has me 😂 btw Gale didn't know about Coins plan, but he played a part in creating the two part bomb with the delayed explosion. He and Beetee were talking about it in the beginning of the film. Love the HGs, the only thing I can't handle is Finnicks death 😭 I've never been able to watch it. He was literally one of the best characters. When you said Finnick die...are you dumb, I was like 😳🥺 I know his death is supposed to make the audience grasp the reality and severity of war, but I personally already knew that having watched the 3 previous films and seeing how many characters had died. Apparently Suzanne Collins didn't realise Finnick would become so well loved when she wrote the series, but I have no idea why she would think that because pretty much everyone loves Finnick and are either so sad or angry that he dies. He deserved to live his life in peace with Annie and their son. Devastating. Was glad to see Katniss and Peeta find some kind of happiness though.

So the bombing was Gales idea, so esstentially in Katniss eyes he's the reason Prim got caught in the crossfire because he was so focused on war and not people's lived. Felt so good when she said goodbye to him

But yes, Coin used his idea to double bomb to make the capitol look bad

While reading the books I had been Team Gale if for no other reason than the romance with Peeta was what the Capitol expected. But after the final bombing scene I finally switched to Team Peeta. I knew Katniss could never be with him because of Gale's involvement.

I remember reading that finale in the books (I think I read all of them either after the first movie or not long after) and Prim's death was so shocking. I was around 15 and kinda emotionally stunted (I didn't cry from 13 to 17, idk why, it was weird), but I was so upset and disturbed I started pacing around the house to work it out. And still thought about it for weeks afterwards. It was the first "happy" ending that made me feel like that, which I think communicated how Katniss felt at the end of it all. The whole series started because she volunteered for Prim, and then Prim died such a pointless death from the hands of the "good guys". And now as a grown-up I'm reading the series again and it's so much tougher, emotionally, when I understand all the subtext and what's to come. I don't know if I can get through that scene on my own at 27, whether in the book or movie form. Because now that my brain's frontal lobe is fully developed and I cry at least once a week, being an elder sister and when our city gets bombed daily seeing Prim die might just break me for a while 😭

I know I'm late but to answer your question about the bombing. In Mockingjay Part 1, if you remember, Katniss walks up on Gale making plans with Beetee to have a bomb that will have a second delayed but bigger explosion to kill the people who go to help the wounded from the first bomb. We also learn in Mockingjay Part 1, Prim was being trained to be a full fledged doctor like her mom. So fast forward to Prim's death, like Gale's plan, they bombed the children so the medical team and peacekeepers go to help the children. Prim was part of the medical team so she was there helping the children, but then the delayed secondary explosion went off and Katniss remembered that it was Gale who gave the idea. Now Gale didn't say "Let's use this on the Capitol Children" but the fact he gave the idea and they used it, and it killed Prim, Katniss can't separate the two. It was Gale's invention that killed her sister when all she wanted from the get go was to protect Prim.
