I think that’s the point. Even in the books. He had empathy for his classmates and showed him caring for others at times. I think the idea is that we should wrestle with what influences evil and not just go based off of thinking some people are born evil and some are not. We see him make steps all along the way. But even in the book, he goes back and forth and struggles until he just keeps stepping over line. Imo, they made changes in movie that painted him more clearly making conscious choice to step over the line. For instance, Bobbins death in the book was dark and chaotic and he didn’t know he killed him. That was portrayed as self defense. In the movie, the change made it VERY clear that Snow killed him when the boy was no longer a threat. To me, I think they did well showing or having Snow say the things he was thinking so it’s perplexing to hear folks feel like he was portrayed as good. I’m like did yall not listen to the bigoted statements he made in this movie? 😅 I think folks are struggling because he’s attractive and we are conditioned to struggle finding attractive people as “bad”. There are literally studies with kids who look at white and Black Barbie dolls and asked which one is good and bad. It’s actually quite brilliant to see this translated on screen but I can’t stand folks blaming the lack of inner dialogue when this dude was a walking red flag through most of the movie.

If you're wondering why Coriolanus Snow inherits the Plinth fortune I'm pretty sure it's cause the Plinths knew Snow was friends with their son Sejanus, but they didn't know he was the reason for his death. Then after their son died they just decided that Snow inherit their fortune, cause he was the closest friend to their only son.

Either that or in some sick twisted way they are “grateful” to Corio because he got rid of the one blemish in their reputation. He seemed to be the only one in the family to not want to be capital. If he’s gonna disgrace the family by consorting with rebels they’d rather want him dead than trying to cover it up with their money, further cheapening their name. If that makes sense.

@@tmm4195 I agree that my other theory is slightly more dark than needs be. But Mr Plinth was slightly suspicious of Corio, or at least interested in him. There is a moment in the book where Mr plinth and Snow meet. They are very much cut from the same cloth. One example is when Mr Plinth doesn’t accept a drink from Coriolanus, saying he doesn’t drink at all. Coriolanus is pretty much against drinking because he feels is clouds his mind. Mr Plinth also is very aware that the Snow’s have lost their fortune, which is why he’s more mindful of his friendship with Sejanus. Mr Plinth mentions Corio’s father, saying their business had overlapped and they had met before, since both were involved with munitions, but he doesn’t seem to like him. He tells Corio he’s different from his father. Mr Plinth spoke highly of Corio’s mother. It seemed like Corio’s father is what Mr Plinth aspired to be, a munitions tycoon settled in the capital with a respectable name. Not saying Plinth really wanted Sejanus dead, but he much preferred Coriolanus as a son to Sejanus. He probably wanted to elevate his status by in a way that “adopting” or supporting a respectable family to earn brownie points in the capital and have their name be associated with an original capital family. He also probably saw Corio’s hunger for success and saw his potential for greatness.

to answer some of your questions 1. coriolanus is poor because after his father and mother died during the war their family essentially lost everything, they still have their capital apartment and their good name but that's all that they have. 2. there aren't necessarily just singers hanging around district twelve, lucy gray is covey, which is a community/culture of traveling musicians. the peacekeepers forced them to stay in twelve a few years before the movie's events. 3. not only did they keep the tributes in a zoo, but they also had the VET tend to them!!! that's why jessup's bat bite got so bad, because the person meant to treat him was trained to deal w/ animals 4. coriolanus always calls her lucy gray rather than lucy because it's a covey thing to be double named. the first name from a ballad, the second name from a color. lucy gray's first and second name came from the same song (lucy gray by william wadsworth). it's the same with maude ivory for example. "maude" from the poem "maude clare." ivory for the color, and also because it's the material used for piano keys. 5. we don't know what happened to lucy gray, she may have lived, she may have died. we live never find out because coriolanus never found out. the sort of point of her as a character is that she symbolizes freedom. she escaped coriolanus, she survived the arena, she survived the peacekeepers and the districts. it haunts him for the rest of his life, never knowing what happened to her, because to him it represents the fact that he's not inescapable. but her actual fate is up to interpretation, i like to think she lived. great video as always xxxx

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the Snows had invested everything into District 13? Which, of course, got 'destroyed' in the war. That's why they lost their fortune. after what happened with lucy gray, it’s mentioned in the books that snow thinks about only marrying someone who he has no attraction to, because he thinks that love makes people weak. hence his infamous line, “it’s the things we love the most that destroy us.” he has a loveless marriage that was likely more about status and continuing his lineage. also, to answer your question and sejanus, his family’s wealth earned them a place in the capitol. it’s also where the plinth prize that coriolanus wants is from, it’s sejanus’ fathers money. but they’re originally from district 2, which is why sejanus’ classmates look down on him since he was born in the districts.

Regarding Tigris' name, I think it has two meanings. In the Capitol, a lot of people have Roman names (like Coriolanus or Plutarch). Some people see Rome as the beginning of "Western" civilization. Tigris is a river in Mesopotamia, where the actual first known human civilizations were born. I think the name is subtly reminding you that the Capitol thinks it's the center of the world now, the way Rome used to. I think her name separates her from the Capitol culture and firmly places her in a more grounded (literally, named after a geological feature) place. Then I thinks he purposefully made herself look like a cat or tiger. The TBOSAS book says she likes raw meat and finds comfort in fur coats. It's possible after seeing the "humanity" of the Capitol she decided she'd rather be another species. I really want to know what happened in between TBOSAS and Mockingjay.

I love the third part because we see Snow getting crazier. In the other parts, I understood a little bit about the reasons behind some of his acts, he was trying to save his family and himself. But after going to 12 he was getting greedy about control and everything. I think the last part was the beginning of what we see of President Snow in the other movies.

I think Snow was walking a tightrope between good and evil. I think he was sincere when he said he'd protect Sejanus, even though he'd already sent the jabberjay message...I think he did that to protect himself, not to get Gaul's attention, and there was a chance it wouldn't work, anyway. Snow still thought he could play both sides of the fence, stay on the tightrope...but he'd already overbalanced into evil, even if he didn't quite realize it yet. Some actions you can't take back.

Now, I'm going strictly off the movie, as I haven't read the book, but I always consider different mediums to each be a different story continuity. At least in the movie 'verse, I think he cared for Sejanus somewhat, but cared for himself more. I don't think he fully realized the cost of betraying a friend until Sejanus' hanging...and then it was too late. He then had to rationalize the death to himself to stay sane. That was when he made that final, irreversible step to the Dark Side.

The book puts out quotes from Hobbes (who thought people are inherently bad, violent) and Rousseau (thought ppl were inherently good). Snow is a Hobbesian and he thinks they need the hunger games to remind people that "people are vicious animals." And if it weren't for Capitol control/oppression, life would be hell because it'd be just like the arena. What Snow doesn't fully understand is not everyone thinks like he does. And there are always tributes like Reaper and the girl who mercy killed Marcus who instinctively want to help others, not hurt others. We need government but we don't need Snow's government. Not that there aren't tons of uncomfortable real life parallels, like the US putting migrant children in cages like the tributes were caged.

I think "what made Snow that way" was his experience during the war (*starving), his father's influence during formative years, his father's death, having to keep up the appearance of having money when he didn’t and the drive/pressure to be able to support the family by winning the school prize/scholarship. Who said there’s a reason for Snow being who he is? I don’t think this is about giving Snow a reason, it’s more how he started to get where we see him later on. It’s very clear book Snow is also always bad, in fact he’s way worse because that’s just who he is. From the 4th page he’s thinking vile thoughts and his actions don’t match that since he’s manipulating people and coming off as charming to get what he wants, that’s just who he is and it just builds and builds as it goes on until he does show his true colours. I don’t think it all needs to be about an exact reason of changing a character completely to be a villain tbh, especially someone as horrible as him. I think a big part book wise is wanting him to do better but he never does, he’s surrounded by good people with Tigris, Sejanus and Lucy Gray and he has plenty of chances to do the right thing but then he’ll do or think something that reminds you of who he is

If I could have picked anyone to be the winner of the 10th Hunger Games, I'd want it to be Reaper.🥰He was a formidable competitor, but also really sweet, helpful, and respectful.😊He wasn't very nice to his Mentor, but he didn't really have a reason to be.🤔The entire time, his whole purpose was to look out for Dill. When she died, he decided to risk his own life out in the open to give her and everyone else a respectful "burial" of sorts.❤He was doing what he considered to be right, even if he knew the Capitol might punish him.😮And then, even if Wovey's death would have put him one Tribute closer to winning, he was still earnestly warning her about the snake container.😭In the end, he took his death face-on, not being afraid of it like Mizzen and most of the others, and not complaining about it like Coral. I seriously love this dude... but... even though I suppose he had to die for the sake of the plot... it doesn't make it hurt any less.😔 Honestly, with what happens, I'm not that happy Lucy Gray won.😒She won by cheating, and she didn't even make that compelling of a Victor. Reaper had a fraction of the screen-time as she did, and I was just as entertained by him.😍 R.I.P. Reaper... you were a real one. *Three-finger salute*

the book is different, you can tell he's narcissistic and manipulative, but also this kinda makes you simpatize with him when lucy runs away and turns on him with the snake. in the book he actually thinks of killing her the moment he sees the guns and realizes that he could go back to district 2 instead of living in the woods forever, cause that's just not a lifestyle made for him. he betrays her first and she just runs to hide and make sure that he has turned on her. he almost seems actually hurt in the movie. i do think he loved her, but his love for her wasn't enough to make him change his ways and give up on his selfish ambitions

I really loved this. Hate snow, but also, I love him too? Like in the same way I loved Old snow cz he’s SUCH an interesting COMPLEX smart villain! Probably my fav villain of all time actually. Like the idea of nature beating man and that leading to us turning to evil (Lucy’s little talk about inherent goodness and how snow juxtaposes all of that as a character) everyones prey until you have to be a predator. Becoming twisted by succumbing to the instinct of needing to survive. Ahhhh like that’s such a good theme! Such good writing from Collin’s! Nature vs nurture. Man vs death. It doesn’t get more primal and raw than that- and somebody being a villain out of no other reason but survival is so fascinating to me and weirdly different. Like I don’t recall a lot of villains who have a character development that develops them as villains and not becoming better morally, just the better them. And this is Cory at his best. The victor. Chills this series. Always gives me chills.

i just watched the movie today...before that i was seeing reels about how people were fawning over Snow...i think it's the curls... but it was pretty clear that corneliys wasnot a good person...he may have been sympathic to lucy but i believe that came from 1. she saved him, 2. he wanted to prove that he could make even a weak player win...he did get attched to her along the way but he didnit turn good...he didn't feel sympathy for the other tributes..not the children, not Jessep nothing...he only cared to keep lucy alive coz she was 'his'.... ontrary to him Sejanus was actually good...his goodness did not help anyone but at no point did he choose to do evil...i get the fascination with villains specially when they had no choice or were truely forced...but in his case i don't think it was necessary...he was geeedy is all...greedy for the lost honor of the Snow name and greedy for success and wealth and acknowledgement...and fir themomenrs he cared for Lucy,he was greedy for her

I don't think he ever would have married Lucy Gray Baird anyhow - men like him don't marry women like her. They keep women like her as their mistresses, in a house or an apartment in a different side of town to the side they live with their wives, keeping a second key so that they can come visit whenever the fancy takes them, taking them only to certain clubs or restaurants that would allow kept women through their doors - if he'd let her out at all. At 27:04 you can see that snow and Lucy are at the lake that has a little shack thingo with two kids behind them. Okay so basically my theory is that the kids behind them are Katniss’ parents bc in the beginning of the 1st hunger book (not the movie) she goes hunting and goes to the lake with the shack that her dad showed her, and I feel like since they named her Katniss after the plant that they got it from. But I watched this movie at the cinemas and I remember that Lucy called the girl in the back a name but I can’t remember it so I can’t relate the name to one of Katniss’ parents.

the girls name is maude ivory, i thought that maybe maude ivory was katniss’ grandmother from her dads side. Since the dad taught katniss all of the songs, valley song, hanging tree, etc and maude ivory knows all of those songs and could’ve taught them to him.
