A beautiful day of bushcrafting in the forest, featuring the Husqvarna Carpenter's Axe. Although not the intended purpose, this is a nice camp axe. While it does have it's limitations for bushcrafting, it's 2.2 pound head allows it do to good work. You can pick up this axe at the link below:

Hey Dave, I wanted to say thanks for the videos on the Husqvarna carpenter's axe. I ended up getting this axe for woodcarving (and, let's face it, just cuz I wanted it!), as I think this axe might be perfect for carving out blanks for spoons, bowls, etc., and for creating straight splits, especially when used with a baton. I basically followed your videos and cleaned up the axe in the very same way. I used parafin on the sheath, and wood block oil on the handle (that's what I already had in the house). Husqvarna has upgraded the sheath: it now has a piece of leather that protects the edge from the rivets. The axe was razor sharp out of the box. I literally shaved the back of my arm with it, and felt no need to touch up the blade. Your videos definitely helped me choose this axe (but I doubt I will take it camping as my tomahawk is much lighter and is probably a better camp tool). Thanks again!

+Craig Swogger You are more than welcome, Craig! I am glad I could be of some assistance! This axe shines at woodcarving, especially when using with a baton! Mine was pretty sharp out of the box, too! Sounds like you used some excellent stuff for condition of the sheath and handle. I also strongly concur with you that I don't take mine into the bush a lot, either. My other bush axes are much lighter and more made for camp and bushcraft tasks, however this is an outstanding axe and will do the job if need be! Keep me posted on how you are liking it, my friend, and thank you for the very kind comment! -Dave

Say Heah David. Yeah a Carpenters Axe is a great tool to have in the bush especially when your building a camp, Carpenters use it to build houses. I went outside the box with mine, Although I still was aware of the straight edge that is used to form with. I went more with a Japanese version style Coping Axe. I use my Ka-Bar ZT Zomstro first thing I did is put the black handles that it also came with, Now it doesn't look like just a Zombie Slayer but a formidable tool. I can also chop and use it actually like a Carpenters Hatchet but with the Japanese Coping Style. Thanx for sharing yours, I guess once you try the Pack Axe you don't go back.

Maybe wisdom exceeds my short experience but I recently bought one of these for my survival pack taking price as a factor. After I received it and tested it I was very very impressed for the price. I have been logging for 3 months every year for the last 14 years with ease with less quality axes. The reviews of this axe are confusing to me. This is true craftsmanship at a very reasonable price no doubt.

hi Dave. i don't have a lot to compare it too, but I'm impressed. I've a woodsman folding saw and a cold steel shovel/axe. they're great but this completes my kit. I've only made a few feather sticks and chopped few branches down so far. i didn't need to sharpen it as it came with a great edge. the sheaf is ok, but it's on my list to make a better sheath i can attach to my belt or rucksack. regards. Dave, I am trying to decide between this axe and the Council Tool 17” Hudson Bay axe for a short general purpose camp axe. Do you have an opinion between the two for general camp chores?
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 6 жыл бұрын
I would lean towards the Council Tool HB axe, as I love all the axes I own from them. This one is a carpenter's axe and constructed as such. However, it can do general purpose camp chores but not as smoothly straight from the factory. Both axes can be modified to your liking, though! Thank you for taking the time to stop by! -Dave

+BlackRifle Survival Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment, my friend! At a young age, my grandfather taught all of us grandkids how to carve with an axe, so I learned control very early on. He was a big believer in an axe being the only tool you need in the woods, so he taught us to chop, split and carve. I find carving with an axe very meditative and it allows good, mindful time to be spent with the axe. I appreciate your kind words and please don't be a stranger! -Dave

Great video showing the diversity of this 19" axe. HOWEVER, I do have a slightly unrelated question concerning this video. Many of your videos show you setting up camp with just a tarp and sleeping bag. When you camp over night, do you use a tent or hammock? Just curious since you always in the woods and totally at ease even in the cold and snow. THANKS DAVE!

Thank you for the kind words! I really appreciate that! When I do overnighters, I mix it up between hammocks and on the ground under my tarp with a yoga mat and parts or all of the MMSS sleep system. I haven't slept in a tent in many years...haha! Great question! -Dave

Great video Jack, I bought one mostly because of the capabilities you demonstrated. Wonderful axe! If you get a chance, I would love to see you review the small splitting axe too. I'm most curious about its abilities other than splitting, as it is listed as being capable of chopping and limbing (obviously not as its strength). Maybe an ideal pack axe for folks who bring folding or take down saws for much of their cross-cutting chores.

Hey Dave. How are you doing? Can I ask you something? Do you feel any difference between a curved blade or a straight one for the axes? Would you know if there is a specific use for the curve blade or the straight blade? Thank you! Cheers!
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 8 жыл бұрын
+Davi de Lima Hello, my friend! Everything is good here! A curved, crescent blade is much more contoured for chopping, splitting and biting into wood. The straight blade, IMHO, is not as good for that type of task. It will definitely work, but it's more for finer, carving work, which is why most Carpenter's type axes have that straight edge. Being that I used my axes for chopping and splitting, I prefer the curved edges. I would rather use an axe that chops & splits well and can do some carving over an axe that is made for carving and can do some chopping and splitting (if that makes sense). Thank you for watching and leaving your awesome comment, Davi! Excellent questions! -Dave

OK my friend, thanks for the videos and all the effort you take to make them. There are few “bushcrafters” I trust and you are one of the few. I have shortlisted the Husky Carpenters axe and the Multi purpose axe... which do you use the most and find to be a better companion?

Hi John, thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your kind words! Great question! Between those 2 axes, I have used the Multi Purpose far more than the Carpenter's axe. The Carpenter's axe is essentially designed to be just that - an axe for Carpenters. For outdoor usage and my purposes, the Multi Purpose is much more effective and comfortable. Its very nimble and was my main go-to axe for quite some time. Keep me posted on which one you pick up, my friend! -Dave

Mr. Dave, funny you should ask... after much consideration and gnashing of teeth, and watching prices steadily climb up with shipping going from days to weeks on Amazon around the new year, I ended up with a Fiskars X15 chopping axe and an X7 hatchet. I really like them both, but I get no style points 😀 I like the balance of them, they chop well, and they are comfortable in hand. That, and I also refinished an old true temper axe I have that now looks and feels wonderful. I am well axed these day my friend. Thank you very much for checking back, it is a rare thing these days.

Nothing wrong with Fiskars, my friend! I also have the X7 and it's a great little hatchet and I am betting that the X15 is great! I have the X27 Super Splitter and use it often splitting wood for the wood burning stove. Love that splitting axe. I completely agree about watching the rising prices for the Husqvarna axes...I had noticed that a could of years ago. Keep me posted on your new axes, John! -Dave

My brother. Again you demonstrate that you are a master of the ax in the field. I sub to right at 40 channels, and you alone are the only one on YT who has been doing this great series. Loving it a lot!!!!! So well done!!!!! Now a question. You made some coffee in what appears to be the Stanley Adventure "cup." I use one myself. But I've seen others like you who do not take advantage of the vented lid that comes with the "cup" when pouring cowboy coffee. Yes the tapping and yes the addition of a small amount of cold water, etc, to settle the grounds...but that vented lid does all of that for you. LOL >;)
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 8 жыл бұрын
+Charles Larson I am very humbled by your kind words, Charles! Thank you, my friend! When it comes to the Stanely adventure cup, I actually get the same amount of grounds in my coffee, regardless of whether or not I use the vented lid. Once you get close to the bottom, I don't think there is much preventing them from coming through. I leaned this when I first got it and thought it might stop all the grounds but found out the hard way that it doesn't. I get the best result from a slow, steady pour. Very nice to hear from you, brother! -Dave

Is this the latest model? I was going to buy one a year ago and I noticed that they changed the shape of the axe head to a more angled less attractive design, so I held off on it, but now I see this style being advertised again.

I bought this one about 2 years ago so I believe it's the original model. I never noticed that they had changed the axe head over time. Very interesting. I don't think it's a great idea to change the axe head and still advertise it as a "carpenter's axe", as this original head shape works best for serious wood working. Thank you for watching! -Dave

Nice review, but why does this review and every other one I've found talk about how good this axe is for woodcraft, chopping, splitting, etc? Can't find any reviews on how good it is for doing detail wood processing, like carpentry stuff... There must be some reason Husqvarna calls it a carpentry axe instead of a bushcraft axe?
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right. I cannot speak for anyone else but I reviewed this as a bushcraft axe because it is a very nice size for a pack axe and the price was right. I do think, from the factory, it's much more made to be an axe for carpentry, hence the name...haha. I don't do any carpentry so I was unable to do that type of review and it wasn't my purpose for purchasing. Thank you for taking the time to watch, my friend! -Dave

I see a lot of these Husqvarna axes break the bit off right across the stamped lettering. If they would just move that stamping a bit farther back on the cheek I'd be all over one. Even just a little bit might make all the difference in the world. If you look at Amazon reviews of this axe, it seems like they break right there quite often.

That is a great axe. What is the point of the collar on the handle? All that does is add to an already bulky handle. It will increase fatigue when using the axe as intended. In addition, the cutting blade is an inch longer than most other axes used in the woods. If you overstrike with a 4-1/2" blade, you need to be practicing more and "bushcrafting" less. If you really want to bring that axe up to its potential, thin that handle below the head. This is just the opinion of a guy who cuts beams all week long, so just take it with a grain of salt. I like your videos, thanks for posting them.

Truthfully, I don't use this axe for it's intended carpenter's purpose. It's more of a woods axe for me every once in a while, however, other axes I own are much better for the woods. Thank you for watching, my friend! -Dave
