The Hydrophobic Effect | Reason of protein folding | Dr. Nagendra Singh | PENS#10
UGC NET preparation | UGC NET preparation online | UGC NET preparation tips | UGC NET Life Sciences | CSIR JRF Preparation
1. The main reason for a protein to fold into globular shape is hydrophobic forces, which resulted due to hydrophobic effect. That is tendency of non polar compounds to aggregate in aqueous / water medium.
2. Biochemistry of protein folding
3. Basics of protein folding
4. Hydrophobic effects dives protein folding

Why mostly, hydrophobic effects are the main driving force behind protein folding instead of h-bonds or ionic interactions? (Narendra Vikram Singh)

What happens if the nonpolar protein is mixed in a nonpolar solvent? Does the protein degrade or maintain the native structure?
@proteinengineering007
@proteinengineering007 3 жыл бұрын
@Rachana Vanjare .... Like dissolves Like rule is always applicable in solubility....But in case of non polar or hydrophobic proteins, these are not completely nonpolar molecules. Such proteins have only some segments which are hydrophobic....for example a membrane receptor is an example of non polar protein that contain at least 1 stretch of totally non polar amino acids....if u keep that receptor in non polar solvent it wont be soluble as it contain polar regions as well....in order to solubilize hydrophobic proteins u add detergents which can stabilize non polar regions and solubilize protein. Hypothetically, if u have a protein with all non polar residues, that wont exist in aqueous cytosol... and may be soluble only in non polar solvent. Also to keep in mind protein degradation means peptide bong hydrolysis and that can not happen just by keeping a protein in a nonpolar solvent....to break peptide bond 1 need to give heat + acid or use Proteases

Polypeptide chain adopt 3d shape after translation, in the cytosole is because it contains stretches of non polar residues. non polar stretches tend to stick together to avoid water contacts. so acquire a shape. @19IBT034 Prakhar
