I've read Summer and loved her writing style, so I plan to read The Age of Innocence, Ethan Frome, and House of Mirth this next year. They've been sitting on my shelf way too long!

Lonesome Dove is an exceptional book! (My husband said “you can almost taste the dirt in your mouth”.” I enjoyed it so much that I continued on with the whole series. And Now is November is well worth your time. Happy reading!

OMG, my brother-in-law nagged me to read Lonesome Dove and for the longest time I thought he was nuts. Me? Read a Western? AND it was huge... ugh! Well, one day I found a copy in a second hand store and it was probably 50 cents. I bought it just to make him happy. I thought, what the heck, I'll read a few pages, how bad can it be? Honestly, I never expected to fall in love with it as much as I did. I was immediately hooked, one of those books that I couldn't wait to get home from work to read the next chapter. Hopefully, you'll love it too!

Now in November is such a beautiful book. In a weird bit of synchronicity, an Instagram friend posted about an event she went to last night for the woman who wrote that biography about Sanora Babb, and now here you are mentioning her again...hello, Universe! I hear you! I loved The Grapes of Wrath and counted it as a favorite for many years, and then about a decade ago I read Timothy Egan's The Worst Hard Time. The Dust Bowl is a period that fascinates me. I love the idea of your plan to focus on American lit in 2025. Also, I'll join the chorus of voices encouraging you to read Lonesome Dove. If it helps, McMurtry wrote it to be an anti-Western and break down a lot of the myths about cowboys and the West. Be well, Hannah!

As often happens after watching your videos, I’ve added a few books to my reading list! Grapes of Wrath has been on my shelf for far too long, and I also have Timothy Egan’s The Worst Hard Time which looks very good. I’m adding Now in November to my list and Samora Babb. I’ve been rereading Edith Wharton’s books after visiting her home this summer. It was thrilling to be there! I’m a long time Dickens fan but haven’t read one of his novels in some time. I hope to do so in 2025. Nicholas Nickelby is on my shelf but Our Mutual Friend is another I haven’t read. So many choices!

I've spent a large part of my reading lately catching up with my homework. Now that I'm retired I have the time. Some examples: _Madam Bovary_ and _Tender is the Night_ You really should read _Lonesome Dove._ You'll be glad you did.

I read 'Our Mutual Friend' a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It might be nice to read it during the Christmas season. Somehow, a Christmas without a Charles Dickens book or story does not seem a real Christmas to me. At the moment I'm reading 'The Dollmaker' by the American author Harriette Arnow. I found this book in a charity bookshop. Are you familiar with this author? I had never heard of her. The story takes place during the 2nd World War and is about a young mother who has to leave her beloved Hill farm in Kentucky and together with her children follows her husband to industrial Detroit. She feels completely displaced by this horrendous experience. I am two thirds through the book and am totally absorbed in it.😊

I read Now in November a couple of months ago. It was wonderful. I have been meaning to get to Sanora Babb. I have to champion Lonesome Dove. I read it for the first time this past Summer and loved it. I wouldn't say it flies by quickly, but the length and the pacing of the novel fit the plot perfectly.

Unfortunate for Ms. Bab, I think her manuscript was read by Steinbeck before the publication of the Grapes of Wrath. She did the groundwork on the subject and should have been recognized (this work) years ago. I did not know it was finally published. And in her lifetime. Must purchase.

I just read for the first time Steinbeck's East of Eden as a buddy read with Kim from Middle of the Book March. Before I had only read Of Mice and Men, a long time ago. Thanks for bringing Sanora Babb to our attention--not on my radar at all. Now in November is short and intense and a good place to start your Dust Bowl reading, as it was written in the early years of that era. It's a look at one struggling family from the inside, in a way that Steinbeck could not have known or experienced. Can't recommend Our Mutual Friend enough; it is complex and sometimes confusing, but well worth it.

If you would like to read a non fiction book about the dust bowl I would recommend The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan. It won the National Book Award. Also True Grit by Charles Portis is a western that is a fast read and has a female protagonist.

I don't read westerns either, but "Lonesome Dove" is an incredible novel and the late Larry McMurtry was a fantastic writer. Some of the best characters in American fiction are in that page-turner. Hermione Lee's biography of Edith Wharton is excellent, and Edith Wharton is one of my favorite American writers. I haven't read anything by Wharton that I do not like. I wish more people would read "Old New York". It is wonderful. I love "Age of Innocence" and "House of Mirth". "Custom of the Country" is the one that got me into Wharton's work though. It was sharp, funny and clever from the very beginning. As for Hermione Lee, I have her Virginia Woolf biography but have yet to read it. I do believe Lee's Wharton biography is the only book of hers I have read. You will find flaws in it, I am sure, but I think you will love the book as a whole. That's my guess.

​@@HannahsBooks I began this project thinking of doing a book journal similar to Plant Based Bride's.But then realized that wasn't quite the right track for my goal(s). Yes, I wanted a lovely physical record (which I've created) but was more focused on deep,directed reading 'dives'. So last March, I did sketch out all the rest of the year. Devoting blocks of days to a single topic or genre or author, then found titles that fit. (Sometimes made up of...books I need to read ;-))The most useful part was sufficiently narrowing each subject chosen but allowing myself to explore deep and wide. Virginia Woolf/Bloomsbury took a whole month, so did Contemporary Chinese Sci-Fi/Speculative fiction. I left a few unplanned days in most months for off topic new releases. Sounds horribly regimented but I like the focus and purposefulness of my new system.Planning on a few tweaks for 2025, but yeah, basically I've put myself back in Grad School now that I am retired.

I had never heard of Sanora Babb until recently and now I want to read all of her works. I recently watched a great video about her on Zoe Bee's channel - worth a watch kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2jbp4yPj8mdY9Usi=j-A571VN-YZQnA6y 2025 may be a Sanora Babb year for me. I've been on the fence about Lonesome Dove. I've often thought of it as a "guy's book" but I know quite a few women who recently read it and adored it. I'm starting to plan my 2025 reading and want to mostly stick to what I've got on my shelves already, but I may add that in to 2025 TBR.
