I loved my i7 9700K, it was a gaming beast. Unfortunately, the motherboard it was with had an issue, so I had to upgrade without a lot of money. I came across a steal of a deal on an Asus rog maximus xii motherboard for about $100 and an Intel i7 10700k for $50, and was able to swap everything else over from my old system. As far as I can tell, in games it's either the same, or slightly faster than my old chip, but doing anything involving multi threaded apps, it's quite a bit faster. Paired with my RTX 4070 Super, it's a gaming beast and will last for a few more years until intel sorts out it's issues with oxidation etc on the 13th and 14th Gen chips. Waiting for 15th Gen, but in the meantime, this system does everything I need.

4080 and 9700k OC to 5.10 GHZ here and no need to upgrade at all. Still getting over 80fps in 4k native using DLAA. And DLSS performance mode is there so no need to upgrade fellas.

@@TheErazar I played through around 150 hours of Horizon: Forbidden West with that setup, at 1080 upscaled to 4K with DLSS. Most of the time the framerate was good enough for me. There were a few places where the total poly count from machines and environment was sufficiently large that you started to feel it in the framerate, with perceivable slowdown. Basically in more complex locations where there was simultanously a larger number of machines in play. It wasn't enough to spoil the overall experience; 95% of the time I felt things were fine. I did also have a bunch of quality settings at the lower end (again, didn't really affect my experience). My understanding is the frame rate at 1080 upscaled to 4K with DLSS is going to be superior to playing at 1440 with no DLSS. I found the DLSS upscaling very good, so you might want to try setting a game to render at 1080 and upscale to 1440 with DLSS if that's an option. Your frame rate will probably be substantially better than playing at 1440 natively. DLSS is a bona fide game changer in my opinion. (I can't speak for AMD's FSR equivalent as I've never tried it directly.)

I love my i7-9700! I do sometimes wish I had the unlocked K version, but it's still super performant! I've got a GTX 1080 8GB and they both compliment each other pretty well, sometimes the GPU does fall behind though. Even still, plenty powerful, to even warrant a GPU upgrade!

Thanks for the video. I was very aware my 4070 super was bottlenecked by my 9700k by 20-30% even in 1440p. As someone who enjoys high refreshrates, i'm now painfully aware! Loading times in CPU intensive games is a huge difference between me and my friends, like Total war Warhammer 3, they get out and inside of combats 10-15 seconds ahead. Holding out to see what the new intel core ultra series 2 and ryzen 9800x3d has to offer before making a call.

@@bankhead832 I have an rtx 3060 ti for now paired with my 9700k. I play at 1440p, and it doesn't matter if I have the graphics settings on high or low, the cpu usage stays at 90 ish to 100% most of the time. Occasionally in certain areas the gpu will be at 100% and the cpu will not be then the gameplay is smooth for like a minute but that usually doesn't happen. So, my gpu is mostly not being fully utilized cuz of the cpu bottleneck. If I had a 4k monitor, it would help with the cpu bottlenecks, but it might be about time to get a new cpu when intel 15th gen releases. I only ever have cpu bottlenecks in next gen only games, otherwise it's fine. It even struggled in Alan Wake 2 and that is a next gen only game.

The 9700k is SEVERELY bottlenecking your 4070, the fps loss is definitely substantial, I dont know how you didnt know it would bottleneck it. I have a 3060 and its bottlenecked from this old cpu, you should consider upgrading IMMEDIATELY as am I, because your 4070 was a waste if you dont essentially.

@@twizzardx Hello, I don't know what you're doing, but my 4070 Super is constantly at 99% load when I'm gaming. Therefore the 9700K is not a bottleneck, I also play in 4K and the graphics card is limiting anyway. I don't buy anything new, it would be a complete waste of money.

my build is from 2019: ASUS Prime Z370 P-II, I7 9700k, 16 GB RAM, 2 HDDs (no SSD), nVidia gtx1650. only this year i wanted to buy a new PC with i7 14700k but had to return it to the vendor dze to massive instability problems. So am back to my old build now and (though the HDDs are slow) everything is super ***stable*** - i do not game much but even Microsoft FlightSimulator 2020 works smoothly. (yes i know it requires mainly GPU usage); i sometimes do a few days of BOINC calculation for medical projects like Rosetta@Home and the processor does its job. In the BIOS / UEFI however i did DISABLE the Turbo, so it never clocks above 3,6GHz ant therefore never really gets hot. HWINFO64 tells me that overal power is about 55W if all cores are in use (not always with AvX) and i set SVID behaviour to AUTO and pretty much everything else to AUTO. And until now great build, probably will use it for the next 5y or so

i7-9700K 5Ghz and 3090Ti here and oh damn I don't feel like the 9700K is still great. Have hard time playing some games in 1440p when the 3090Ti is at less than 40% usage and the CPU at 90% and more and only 70°C. Maybe it's my mobo, the Z370-A Pro was a cheap choice, but who knows

Yeah odds are its the CPU. My guess is that some of the games you're playing leverage hyperthreading which the i7 can't take advantage of. If you can find a decent price on an i9 and sell the i7, it could be a worthwhile upgrade, but with a 3090Ti, your best bet is a better platform.

I still have this since it released. Mine can overclock to 5.1 on a $50 asrock motherboard lmao. I think its a great processor and dont see me upgrading for another few years probably, unless my motherboard craps out but its been overclocked since i got it and my temps never get above 80° so i dont see anything bad happening. I do remember being pissed it has no hyperthreading. To my knowledge, it is like the only i7 ever released to not have it but it works so damn well. Currently running 32gb 3200 mhz ram, 3070 gpu and the processor at 5.1. Run every game i play at 144 fps +, cant ask for much more to be honest.

Video editing demands good multi threaded CPU performance and plenty of RAM on higher resolution editing. On paper, the 4790 wins thanks to multi threaded performance. But the 8100 have greater allround system stability, compatibility with DDR4 RAM and windows 11 support, so I think that the 8100 processor is a decent choice in your case. From Geekbench: i5-6500 Single thread 1200 Multithread 3270 - Cores/threads 4/4 - DDR4/DDR3 RAM - Year 2015 - Windows 10 I3 8100 Single thread 1266 Multithread 3467 - Cores/threads 4/4 - DDR4 RAM - Year 2017 - Windows 10/11* Win 11 If motherboard supports TPM (probably does) i7-4790 Single thread 1244 Multithread 3896 - Cores/threads 4/8 - DDR3 RAM - Year 2014 - Windows 10 The 4790 thanks to being hyperthreaded, is the more powerful CPU. With 8 instead of 4 threads. But it's also the oldest one from 2014 and you're stuck on windows 10, if that's an issue. The 8100 might not be as fast in multi threaded loads, but it's a good choice since it should offer more modern features and stability, being DDR4 RAM and windows 11 compatible.

this is rather bs, if you'd want to show something you'd show the gpu usage as well. I got a 9700k and 4070ti and i really need to upgrade cpu. For example in BF2042 i get around 30-40% gpu usage. There are very few games who use the gpu over 90% on majority im still bottlenecked around 50-60% gpu. It may offer a good performance overall because the gpu is beefy but its like playing with 2070 or 2080S on the games that are not GPU heavy so you're not getting your money's worth for a 4070 which is kinda sad. Oh and yes im speaking about 1080p gaming here

The 7700k would work with the motherboard you’ve got currently, however the 9700k is the stronger chip if you’re wanting to do anything other than gaming. I’d personally go for the 9700k, but be aware you’ll need a new motherboard

I would say no. that resolution probably means your monitor has a cap of 75Hz maximum if it isn't 60, which means as of right now, your i5 is overkill and with the 2060. Check out some high refresh rate 1080p monitors, there are a lot of great sales right now.

Not worth a penny honestly struggles to play cold war half the time. It may stutter, it may lag, or the frame pacing may be thrown out the window. It may have good overall performance, and decent 1% lows, but the .01% lows are unforgivable in many cases. What a shame

@@magikkris I've owned this CPU since it came out, and I have found every way to maximize performance on this CPU. It's an acceptable CPU in old games from last Gen as long as you are locking your frames to 60 because of how bad it can stutter past that, but in almost every new game it collapses under the weight of complex scenes. Locking the fps to 45 seems to eliminate most of the performance issues the CPU has by giving it some breathing room, but the CPU is so dated that it clearly shouldn't even be recommended for budget builds especially seeing as the 8/9th gen platform has been dead for years. You would need to replace your mobo, ram, and CPU to upgrade past this 9700k. And it can only really use ram up to 2666mhz
