The Iconic Empanadas of Bogotá

The Empanada is a dish in which the fillings change from country to country and from city to city. Its origin dates back to Arabic cuisine, which followed a tradition of eating small pieces of many foods instead of a large one-ingredient meals. Each Colombian city has its empanada, and Bogotá, the capital city, is a special place for Empanadas. The truth is that this type of pastry, stuffed with rice and mixed with pieces of meat or chicken has become a definitive symbol of the Bogotá.

We lived next door to the church Santa Maria de Los Angeles in Medellín for six months in 2018/2019. Every Sunday evening, an empanada truck and fried potato truck would park out front and we would fill our bellies from them. Delicious and inexpensive.

@@jr3753 yes we do. We have savory kinds but we also have sweet kinds like those eaten with pineapple or cajeta filling. In Mexico we have so much variety of food that sometimes empanadas don’t get mentioned a lot but we still very much eat them and enjoy them

We also have this kind of food in Indonesia. Exactly at North sulawesi, its called panada with pampis ( tuna's floss ) or shredded fish meat for the filling. Fried dough with savory shredded fish meat inside. Check out panada too the brother of empanada from south east asia. Similiar story its influenced by spain/portugese food called empanada. My favourite Empanadas are from Ibagué, Tolima. Behind the Exito there is a place called La Rica Estación. You can find them in a few places in Bogotá that sell them too. Carrera 15 con calle 82 has a little place called Empandas Tolimenses, they used to cost 500 COP each. These is also a place where Caracas meets calle 32, called Asadero la 32.

En específico, no se sabe exactamente el origen de la arepa, es cierto que es propia de estas regiones, pero lo único que se sabe es que nace de las culturas ancestrales indígenas (recordemos que Venezuela, Panamá, Colombia y Ecuador hicieron parte del mismo territorio llamado “La Gran Colombia”) Ya con la llegada de los españoles la receta se transforma, se les agrega ingredientes europeos como el queso o la carne de res. En fin, la arepa no es ni de aquí, ni de allá, cada territorio la apropió según su cultura y tradiciones, por lo menos acá en Colombia existen más de 40 arepas por cada región, todas muy diferentes las unas de las otras.

Im proud to have colombian blood even though i was born and raised american. My grandmother used to make me the best enpanadas ever. Even though she passed away many years ago, i still cant imagine anyone making anything remotely as good as hers. She used to make everything from scratch.the meat straight fresh from the farm as well as the vegetables and rice.

I grew up on the border of El Paso, Texas and with my family being from Mexico. I knew the empanada as being part of the “pan dulce (sweet bread)” category. They were filled with pineapple, pumpkin, strawberry, and apple filling and baked. It wasn’t until I travelled to Argentina during my college years that I tasted them with meat in them and fried. I enjoy how food evolves from one place to the other 🍽❤️✌️.

😭 There is that one empanada that I really like and it’s the Vigan empanada influenced by the spanish colonization in our country. That’s like the first one with crunchy orange dough but with papaya/veggie strips, egg and Vigan longganisa, no rice. Add that spicy vinegar with lots of onion and that is heaven! It’s tough watching this episode damn especially when it’s hard to find that empanada in Manila.😭🤣 I’m hungry now lol!

I am from Bogotá, Colombia. I hate to admit it but adding rice to the empanada kills the magic, a good Colombian empanada has the protein and potato. Rice is usually used only to make cheaper and bigger empanadas, in Bogotá you will find far better empanadas without rice. If you want something similar with rice, then the pastel de yuca is the one one to go for. As a Colombian I think the best empanadas are from el Valle de Cauca and Popayán (pipian dough) regions. The Carmimañola from the Caribbean region is also amazing, even though is a different sort of empanada. Aji casero (mild home made hot sauce) and some lime/lemon are a must. Pipian empanadas will always have as complement an amazing peanut hot sauce

Theyre easy to make all u need is flour and water for the shell and the filling is up to you. Us filipinos have our own versions the people from Vigan do empanadas like this but its filled with egg, bean sprouts cabbage carots and the optional shredded sausage. The other one is filled with ground pork and peas somtimes chiken
