If they would just add more flights to Palanga (PLG) that would be the best & cheapest option, they literally have 3 or 4 destinations. I'm sure if they added Spain Italy etc that airport would get really popular

Palanga's Airport code is PLQ or EYPA But yes, as someone who regularly traveled to Klaipeda, it is a slog to either get there with a bad connection through Riga or Copenhagen or to take a bus service from Riga. But to be fair, the airport is just quite small and can't easily expand much further without again upgrading its infrastructure.

Palanga airport doesn't serve much purpose, population density is low there while population to the west of it is 0 obviously as it's by the sea. It's most conveniently placed for very small amount of people.

I often fly between London and Vilnius, and the airport connection in Vilnius is _so much_ nicer than London's: in Vilnius, from door to gate it takes me 1 hour and costs less than 1€ by public transport that goes every 10 min. In London, the same thing takes 3-3.5 hours, and costs £15-20. I felt very relieved when I found out that this plan to build a new airport in a place that's not convenient for anybody, was cancelled.

As a person who lives inbetween of Vilnius & Kaunas, and that planned area is in municipality, Personally I think a new airport is - pretry impossible. Sure - THEORETICALLY it's possible, but I'm 90% sure my city's residents of Elektrėnai would boycott it, there's not much housing, and the noise! It would be like Heathrow Airport. As an aviation geek, sure I'd love it, but I'd just feel bad for my city's residents, the sound of jet engines, etc.

Yes good point. Considering the surrounding area is so rural with a lot of farm land, the noise would be quite disuptive. But I also wonder if residents in nearby towns/cities would welcome more economic activity?

So both Vilnius and Kaunas airports combined moved around 7 million people, I'm not sure an entire new airport is needed for that. (Also feel free to watch my video about a trip to Kaunas)

@@Got-lander both. Citizens have been returning at faster pace than leaving lately and also two dictators to the east are forcing Belarussians, Ukrainians and some Russians leave their countries. Well not some russians, just that russians mostly emigrate to poorer countries in central Asia and such.

At this point, anything to do with rail baltica should be questioned 🤷‍♂. I read that in 2002 it was planned to be finished by 2012. Anything a country does something that would only make sense if rail baltica is finished is not a good idea (i.e. closing the Tallinn-Pärnu railway). As for the Airport, I'm glad it's not happening. It would take so much public time, funds, and there doesn't seem to be a single main reason to do so. If the Vilnius and Kaunas airports were tiny and not able to handle the traffic that they required, it may make sense to try this, but right now, why? Instead of spending funding on things that will directly improve the cities, they wanted to build a huge new Airport in the middle of the forest that is inconvenient and expensive to get to, and close two airports that seem to work well. It just seems like there are so many other things that they could do. (sorry for my rant lol)

I think it is a stupid idea that doesnt really solve anything. Only people living in/close to Vilnius or Kaunas this would benefit. Everyone else still would struggle to get decent flights or even get to the airport. in LT we have 3 shitty airports where none of them are a decent travel option and loads of people end up driving to RIX anyway. Transportation from smaller cities is non-existant. Large portion of population is not served by these airports at all. Would be good if rather more effort would go expanding Kaunas significantly and then relying on Rail Baltica for connection to Vilnius and Klaipeda.

It would be amazing for Lithuanians, one larger airport is always better, because it would allow for more direct flights, but making it profitable would be difficult if it had to compete with both Vilnius and Kaunas existing airports.

Do you understand that it will be longer travel time for EVERYONE - from Vilnius AND from Kaunas? Majority of travelers are from Vilnius and all of them will need additional hour to travel to airport. People are not stupid and additional travel time will not be welcomed. For example, people from northern Lithuania prefers to go to Riga because IT IS CLOSER than Vilnius!

But also the question is would you rather have a direct flight or have to do a connecting flight because your airport is too small to support direct flights. I would rather drive to the airport for additional 20 minutes and then have a direct flight.

I think there are many sides to this that probably in the end mean it makes more sense to have one large facility for passenger transit, but I think the key one would be, with a larger facility, we would see more varied flight destinations, and could even start to be a widebody plane destination from across 'the pond' or south east Asia etc. Imagine how Warsaw is now technically one of our hubs to a wider destination list - this plan could have been the same for the Baltics and northern Poland. There is a lot of commercial investment in Kaunas airport (one of these investors is about to become my employer) as it is a major maintenance hub in the region, and having less passenger movements could be a good thing, bit also could be a detrimental thing if Lithuania Airports are having to maintain several runways etc, it would obviously concentrate on the passenger heavy airport first, and potentially lose it's status as 'the biggest and best maintenance airport in the region'

Worst idea ever. Now the airport is literally 20 minutes away from the city center by public transport. Why the fuck would I want to spend an hour and even more money to ride 50 km... so inconvenient. Imagine you are getting back to Vilnius and want to get home to rest like NOW, and then you would have to wait for transport and ride, then probably change the bus, etc. I hope this will never happen. Rail baltica connects to Vilnius and Kaunas already.

I think from the context of the video discussing passenger travel, it’s obvious that I am talking about the three airports of Lithuania used for regular passenger travel. Even the LTOU website only lists the 3. And the video and question of this new airport was its role in replacing Kaunas and Vilnius airport- so not adding one more, but replacing two with one.

As one person mentioned. Lithuanias population is not decreasing (4:20), but growing. According to the latest eurostat info, its around 2.89mln as of 2024

I should have added more detail to my statement, but Lithuania’s birthrate is not enough to grow its population naturally, while a large amount of immigration has been a result of that war in Ukraine.
