The most interesting part for me was this story was written by a black woman. And the original story had a black woman as the main protagonist (I think BOTH characters were black actually but I’m not sure) but publishers, apparently, convinced her the book wouldn't sell with a black woman as the lead so she had to whitewash her own story! We could have had Regina Hall in this role!

I believe the author that wrote the two main characters as black but they were changed to be white because the movie production company didn't think the original idea of two black people falling in love was "believable" and "marketable". It's like saying black people aren't allowed to have love stories like this unless it's commentary on race and class.

That's a common misconception that got spread around. She was referring to the book she wrote before The Idea of You. I believe she said it was an interacial relationship, but they didn't want it because they said it was overdone or something to that effect. Hence why in her next book, she changed the race.

Eh, I don't love that as an ending tbh. Specifically the her never getting over him part. I don't always need a happy ending in love stories, but a story where an older woman with already a failed marriage (where she was cheated on and left for a younger woman) dates a guy who everyone says is out of her league, and then just ends up alone and pining again, just doesn't sound very fun to me. Sometimes wish fulfillment is better.

I have read the book and Solene was the one who left him because she stopped replying to him. I prefer the movie's ending tho. They were still so in love with each other hence the 5 years waiting. It happened. Who are we to say that it was impossible, eh? They were honest with their feeling, honest with each other and didn't give false hopes. Sometimes, true love happens. It's a force of nature and we cannot do anything about it.

Yeah the movie is much better about handling the age gap than the book. They aged him up enough to where it's not creepy (in book he is 20), did away with Solene's fixation on his youth, and did away with that creepy story of him at 13/14 sleeping with someone who was 19 and having that experience presented as him "knowing his taste in women" from a young age. And then Solene's jealousy of that woman. The movie is all the better for not having all those things. And aging up the daughter (she is 12ish in book) so that they dont do that whole leaving a child and her friends with a strange man (Hayes' bandmate).

I find people who support wars pretty weird and they are all over the place! Different people with the same age can be totally different. Ageism is toxic. Out of place too. Couple relationships don't have to be based on buying a house, having children and being happy. Couple relationships are a unique dynamic for each couple. I was in a relationship with someone 20 years younger when I was 43 and he was 23. We had met accidentally when I had just got divorced and was a Mum of two. He was actually the most mature life partner I ever had. It all started as lust and it developed into love. A lot of love. Too much love, perhaps. Social pressure was unbelievably unbearable and after three years I left and ended the relationship. Big mistake I made. Really big. So, before you say "age gaps that large are fucking weird" please show some consideration for the ones who disagree with you. Thank you.

also every cheater i've ever known (either personal experience or friends' relationships) did get jealous when the victim moved on and found happiness. cheaters are insanely immature people, the grass is always greener. when they're in a relationship they want something shiny and new (while still getting all the benefits of the old relationship: have their cake and eat it too), but then once they have the shiny new thing they want the old relationship, or at least want to maintain the fantasy that they could go back to the old relationship if they wanted to. it's disgusting.

Okay I need people to stop thinking this is about Harry Styles. The author is a Black woman, almost 50 and has stated multiple times it's not about him. The main character was supposed to be Black. The publishers kept rejecting the story because they didn't think a Black lead w would sell in a romance/contemporary book. She CHANGED the character(s) to white. She's was either supposed to fall in love with a Black or white boy band member. Technically imo this idea means she probably was thinking more 90s or 2000s boyband and not one direction. Gotta remember a lot more boy bands existed in both the US and UK during this time. Also the author is an established Black writer for tv/film and has done acting, that's how she knows Gabrielle Union, who was also an executive producer on this.

@@user-bk9bs3oc8c k-pop is super fun. I started in 2009, since 2018 I stopped being fully immerse on k-pop ( my favorite groups were retiring ) but I still check what new songs are being released. I used to think kpop was very cultish but lately I've seen anything can be cultish. Even some crochet groups on social media are kinda weird and crochet it's supposed to be fun and relaxing. Personally, what I like about kpop nowadays is the groups and singers that were debuting in mid 2000s, early and mid 2010's are still releasing music and they have a wide range of topics they sing about. Pre teens debuting is still a thing , the older members of the groups are barely 20. I keep supporting kpop to support these singers that are close to my age and wanna keep singing.

I was so excited to see you talk about this cuz i was prepared for you to not like it the way i truly didn't like it lol i wasn't even mad at the age gap, it was more so because i feel like they didn't actually tackle it. All the "bad guys" keep talking about it but the "good guys" don't openly acknowledge it so i feel like it's odd that they keep mentioning it but won't talk about it. They could have pointed out the hypocrisy of men canonically getting less flack for stuff like this but they didn't so it felt weak

I agree! I thought more would be made of what Solene said at her birthday, about her feeling disconnected from her age in her 20s and missing out bc of being a young mom, how that might play a factor in why she connects less with men her age and finds a younger man appealing. Once they get together the age gap is treated as totally incidental
@KaityT97
@KaityT97 6 ай бұрын
@@theprettypurplepony right! Like they had material to work with but they kept just saying "oh people just don't want women to be happy". That was Easily the case for Daniel but for everyone else, it was a fair conversation! Like why are we being halfway feminist about this topic? Lean in! As Kennie said, Hayes was already 24 so you could argue it's not *that* weird (personally I'm not a fan of it but whatever) but that wasn't even the issue. The stakes felt very low for the way the conflict was portrayed so it just felt like a nothing-ahh movie. I was fully prepared upon them mentioning the other older woman for him to fr have mommy issues cuz THAT would be a point of true concern but it was just "ohhh nooo I forgot ppl would have something to say if I dated a world famous pop star, they hate me cuz I'm a woman, woe is me" when that wasn't even really the issue (at least based on how the movie framed it)

i don't actually recommend to read the book bcoz it's a lot of ick since in the book he's 21. which is a no. But in the book there were a lot more depth on their relationship i guess. they talked about more stuff. in the movie it's like where is the attraction is it just she's hot like what else. also one important point is that Oli is Hayes bestfriend in the book, and it's insinuated that Oli is inlove with Hayes. Which since we've established that this is a harry styles fanfic we all know what this refers too.. so uhm Anyways someone on twitter said this movie is if like you're ARMY and your mom started dating Jungkook LMAAOOOOO

Spoiler of the book she leaves him telling him that she never loved him only the idea of him and he kept texting her that he loved her until he realized that she wasn’t going to text back and it stopped. TBH the age gap grosses me out in both the book and the movie. And that goes both ways for men and women

Girl any movie with Coachella in it is cheesy at best. I watched this movie and it's in my opinion pretty stupid but in a fun kind of way. I dont agree that it had emotional depth. Her divorce story is as vulnerable as she gets and him saying he is afraid he will become obsolete and people use him for fame is the most we get from him. Those are fan fic plot points if Ive ever heard one. Their bond is just slightly above surface level. The movie Its Complicated with Meryl Streep has a very different, way more relatable, storyline that discusses similar subjects of the beauties that come with being an older woman. This movie looks at beauty in all angles like body image, the beauty of wisdom that comes with age, the beauty of calmness that comes with having older kids leaving home soon. The Emma Thompson movie Good Luck Leo Grande focuses more specifically on the beauty of an oldier woman's body and older women learning to be more confident in themselves. I know this channel doesnt focus on good films lol. I just wanted to put out there that this film was just so unrealistic and didnt have the depth it needed to be good. It was just kinda dumb. However for the standards of what dumb means on this channel though, this movie is an all around five stars 🌟 from me. It is award winning material compared to Room.
