Here in the U.K. a shop called Richer Sounds offer a price match. The Store manager would only match the price if I bought a very expensive gold plated HDMI cable from him… he told me “the sound is richer, and the picture quality is better”… I asked how does gold make it better? - HDMI is digital and it’s going a short distance - to which he said “it improves the richness and latency…” I argued with him… he gave me some nonsense… I walked out…

These people are not trained. If a digital cable works, it works, that's the whole point of digital. Gold platings on digital connections is just marketing afaik, and it works: the premium they fetch is higher than the price of the plating.

The problem is that audiophilia attracts delusional people and online platforms give them the voice, audience and comfirmation (by other delusional audiophiles). It seems also by design that you cannot distinguish if this was written by a manufacturer or a genuinely confused individual.

The frustrating thing about hi-fi is that you cannot sample products before buying. You have to rely on unhelpful reviews. So if you get into this hobby you'll be disappointed a lot until you find your sweet spot.

Capacitors......like anyone would hear a difference between same value capacitors. It's just laughable , and not even extreme of a example here . I used to know a dude that would hear the difference with audio stones on his amps or not. He never dared to make those claims blind folded. Needless to say my friendship with him was short lived.

You're joking but anything can make a subjective difference. Even the time of the day and what you ate for lunch. Applying a mass on an amp isn't a bad idea, since a thin casing can vibrate and provide microphonics. But you could just stack fat books and call it a day. In hindsight, this hobby is full of pseudoscience and scams. Audiophiles are so obsessed with perfection that they forget about the music.

It's not as simple sometimes. I was confused between the Bose NC 700 Vs sony xm4. So I went to my local electronics supermarket where they actually have headphones on display that you can just hook it up to your phone and try it out. They had the Bose headphones hooked up to this Hifi system that was provided by Bose themselves. And I was not allowed to disconnect them and connect to my phone. So I went with Sony. Also, because of covid, not all stores will have trial headphones. I feel like on ear headphones are like eye glasses or shoes. Everyone needs to try them before buying them but day by day, in the age of online binge shopping, this trend is fading away.

"Audiophiles" love boring sound. every "audiophine" piece of equipment ive ever owned has sounded stale, including headphones, amps and speakers. if you love sound thats as exciting as watching paint dry then yea, go for it. "Audiophile Audio" is the biggest marketing gimmick since the dyson vaccum cleaner. Ive heard some total BS about this subject over the years, things like "I can hear sound upto 22KHz and im 30 years old", "my speakers cost £7,500 which instantly makes them better than your £500 speakers" "Ive just bought a CD demagnatizer, it's made a huge difference". it just goes on, and on. Pay NO attention to any of it, its a steaming pile of horse manure.
