As a mathematician, I’m just glad Turing is finally getting the recognition he deserves. Often times when thinking of great mathematicians we think of people like Euclid, Euler, Ramanujaan, Gödel, Gauss etc. Turing deserves to have his name up there with them and I’m a bit disappointed that they only explored his work at Bletchley because despite being a cryptographer he was also a logician, theoretical biologist and most importantly the father of artificial intelligence which is never mentioned at the end of the film.

Second There most definitely is; true story - based on a true story - ‘inspired’ by a true story I believe that these should *not* be interchangeable. I personally have higher standards for true stories & based ons - I give _some_ latitude to ‘based on’ & ‘inspired by’... but... the degrees of that latitude vary; ‘based on’ requires more adherence to accuracy, IMO than ‘inspired by’ - you can fill in gaps in the historical record with logical assumptions, based on: what’s already known- about the time, the place, the person/s in question... NOT giant leaps. ‘Inspired by’ can be a little more ‘creative’, I think. But not to the extent that you’re essentially making up ‘facts’ out of whole cloth... I guess I’m picky, lol.

As a woman, it really bugs me that they are seemingly trying to show sexism in the fortys by having fictional Joan Clarke subtly show her brilliance and be constantly downtrodden when in reality the film is FAR MORE sexist than the historic reality. Joan Clarke was recruited on her scientific merit, was one of the best cryptographers in the group and became vice-leader of the Hut project. Bletchley Park was one of the first and only places where women could work as mathematicians alongside men (though unfortunately, yes, not equally). But in the film Joan Clarke is completely dependent on Alan Turing, all she is ever shown doing is illegally "helping him along" while on dates and the only conversation she ever has with another woman is about flirting with men. It drives me nuts!!!

yeah it's like hollywood doesn't think the real problems women can encounter are interesting enough. Sometimes they just make women direct lazy copies of males, which isn't always bad. But a women can have an interesting war story/experience, and doesn't need to be a victim or rambo, they can be a new thing we haven't seen in mainstream media. Like maybe a mother protecting her children and finding them food, risking herself, to protect them. Kinda like bird box, but I bet there are probably some crazy stories European, North African, Chinese, and Korean women could tell about the early 20th century.

Another small inaccuracy with the film was the ending, with the text reading "His machine was never perfected, though it generated a whole field of research into what became nicknamed 'Turing Machines.' Today, we call them 'computers.' " This is meant in good spirit, and the Turing Machine is the gold standard, so to speak, on what computers and programming languages should be able to do. However, to equate Turing Machines and computers is incorrect. That said, equating TM's and computers isn't *too* far from the truth. It is, however, incorrect.

I feel more strongly than you do. I think this movie metaphorically castrated Turing all over again. When you have an interesting life story, and instead of telling it, tell something close to that but with fabrications added to increase the drama and win awards, you rob the world of the real story of the person, and therefore of their legacy. I like the actors. I like the acting. i HATE the movie. I want a movie about his life, not "based on" his life. I think most real stories are interesting enough, otherwise they'd be legends, not real stories, or else they wouldn't be worth making a movie about.

Enigma wasn’t the only cipher machine that the Germans were using. The Lorenz and t52 sturgeon were considered significantly more complex than enigma which Turing had nothing to do with. Then you had the Japanese red and purple machines that were a completely different ball game than the German codes which Turing also had nothing to do with. Then you have some of the cipher machines that the Allies were using like the British type x and the American sigba which again, Turing had nothing to do with.

I'll have to disagree slightly--while you're right in the inaccuracies of Joan Clarke's timeline and the people Turing interacted with at Bletchley Park, it's definitely not worth ignoring what the movie did well. That's why it's based on a true story, not a documentary. In Hollywood, there has to be some fabrication to get to the point; here, I think they were focusing on Turing's genius character and his struggle with homosexuality. The movie does an excellent job in that sense, and yes it's not perfect, but it brings to the attention of mass audiences the pain Turing went through. He was not just an off-putting mathematician--he struggled with homosexuality, to the point of ending his life after dealing with chemical castration. The movie even hints at his eating of a poisoned apple at the beginning of the movie as he's shown cleaning up cyanide.

OK, full disclosure: I love this movie, and it actually has a special place in my heart because it was a film that was screened as the opening feature for the Asheville Cinema Festival in 2014 just before it had its worldwide release. Even before the film was halfway finished, I immediately voted it for the festival's best film shown out of competition (with the festival's closing feature, THE FACE OF LOVE, being the other contender, which was interesting because it was one of Robin Williams' last films), and TIG won, so wasn't alone. And it was the best of the out-of-competition films that were screened at the Asheville Cinema Festival during its sadly short-lived run. Sadly, the film had the bad reputable of being co-produced by Harvey Weinstein - boy was THAT a shock as I learned later after TIG left theaters.

Thanks for the great review. I too reject the "don't fact check our movie" argument. One reason it raises my hackles in this movie is my suspicion it overplayed the relationship with Clark, and omitted all of Turing's male relationships as a box office ploy. Very frustrating.

Really enjoyed it! A series would make very much sense. Today movies shape our perception of history the most and a bit of fact checking is really important to seperate the work of art and the real events. Maybe not just fact check "based on actual events" but also movies like "the name of the rose" and look at the depiction of the mediaval age (i.e. the burning of witches, which was much later), or gladiator, which has a nazi-like version of ancient roman arichtecture. Movie suggestions: Schindlers Liste, der Untergang (the downfall). Keep up the good work!

The Cynical Historian And it wasn’t a “massive Hollywood movie!” It’s a low budget British made movie! They also got a lot of information about Alan from his own family. We was never really meant to know any of this information that’s why it was all destroyed because from the Secrecy Act they all had to sign. If it wasn’t for someone actually coming forward from that time and started revealing the truth about Bletchley Park and what was really going on there almost twenty years after Alan’s death no doubt the British Government would have kept his work a secret and completely written him out off WW2 history if they could of! And as for the British Government’s half arsed apology and The Queen’s “sorry but not sorry” Pardon would they and she really have given him one that he shouldn’t of really needed in the first place in my opinion because of his sexuality (which I personally believe was a joke and crime its self back then and still so today in some societies! No one can help who they fall for or their sexuality or personal feelings about themselves feeling like they was born in the wrong body etc... it should never have been a criminal act and because of the government and their god forsaken laws of the land he was labelled a criminal and made to feel more of an outsider!) if they didn’t find out a movie was being made about his work? No I personally don’t think they would have given him an apology or Pardoned his so called crimes ungrateful b**t**ds he helped save millions and millions of people’s lives and help ending the war early and what’s the thanks he gets for helping Queen and Country and the rest of the world? Even as a movie it fell flat compared to beautiful mind and the aviator. Turing was stereotyped as Sheldon from Big Bang Theory and of course as autistic because all math geniuses must be and all autistic has to separate the beans from the carrots, that's just what they do. The conflict of not getting along with coworkers felt forced. He fired two people without hesitation earlier but puts up with the rest who were equally useless througout the entire film? Really the central conflict should have been their race against time in breaking the code and his personal struggles as a homosexual. Either that or you do a character driven story and focus soley on his perspective.

3 massive things the movie glosses right over are Tommy Flowers, William Tutte and the Lorenz machine, none of which (unless I missed it) were mentioned even once.

The movie also screws up the timeline badly for the sake of drama. In real life the first Bombe was ready in early spring 1940 and already decripted some messages. The movie overplays just how badly the average brit was doing by implying people were starving. Malnutrition was never an issue let alone full blown starvation. Again they did this for drama purposes. Implying that only in 1942 did the Bombe get built and actually did something. They don't specifically give dates but there are blink and you'll miss it moments that suggest that.

I believe that Hollywood feels that they have to change things and put their own twist on things to try to prove how talented or original they can be, so if the movies they change get an Oscar or any other worthless nod, that they can feel like they are heroes. They always change great historical stories and not for the better and should do a better job of making films that are more accurate, but in truth they aren’t even close to being that talented. That’s why they remake the same movies over, and over, and over. No imagination or original creativity.

The Imitation Game is by most standards a good movie (minding the fact that history bastardization is almost a given in a lot of film productions), but the Moné comparison still baffles me to be honest. It would imply that the work was in some way artful and transformative, but I'm not sure that's the case or even supposed to be the case. However, if you want to find something artful, transformative and Turing-related, I would recommend a radio drama called Turing's Test with Samuel Barnett as Alan, it's on youtube.

From what you have already said there are several idea forming plot lines, about people. The idea that a gay intellectual man, with autism, would be so positive about a woman (who probably also was on the spectrum) and vice versa. As if that's what tends to happen for bright people, who are often under appreciated. The reason we have Alan Turing on our £50 note, truly, is because he was gay, and cracked the Enigma code in WW2. But there is evidence to suggest his contribution was quite minor.

I agree the "it's art" defense is very weak. A huge part of the attraction of this movie is the "based on a true story" part, there really was an Alan Turing, there really was a codebreaking team at Bletchley Park, etc.; the filmmakers want to use the "true story" as a draw, but switch to the "it's art" defense when called out on the inaccuracies they introduce to the story. So which is it? If you want to make a story loosely based on Alan Turing then make a completely fictional movie with a character obviously based on him, but not named Alan Turing. As many have pointed out, these were real people, many with children and grandchildren still alive, who have to watch their relatives' contributions to winning WW II reduced to bit parts, if not erased altogether, just so someone can make a movie with Alan Turing as the hero. Right or wrong, many people will come away from this movie thinking Alan Turing basically did it all himself, etc., etc., and that's not "art", that's fitting the messiness of real life into the framework of a "great man" hero story. BTW, I did actually like the movie, I just find the "it's art" defense lame--explain why you changed what you changed, defend your choices, don't hide behind the veil of "it's art, I can do whatever I want, but it's Based On A True Story!"

The inaccurate plot points are present in every 'based on a true story' film ever. Writers move chronological events around, take poetic license, and invent characters that didn't participate. This one has lots of these issues, but most biopic are more egregious. If you watch Bohemian Rhapsody, and know literally anything about Freddie Mercury, your head will explode...

I'm no historian, so can't/won't comment on the portrayals... However... The climax of the movie (when the bombe broke its first cipher) was galling beyond belief... To imagine that Turing & Co. had built a machine to crack Enigma encryption, even building the comparator, but hadn't thought of any plaintext German word that would indicate successful breaking of the code... Cart before the horse... Imagine the consequences if Helen hadn't been quite so attractive, and there'd been no "flirting" across the room...

the movie was ok, but it's not faithful to the source material, that being Andrew Hodges' Alan Turing: The Enigma. the movie also got Turing's personality wrong. he had friends and he was funny, nothing like how he is in the movie. there's also the possibility that Turing's death was a accident rather than a suicide like the movie claimed. the guy who wrote the screenplay shouldn't have won the oscar for best adapted screenplay.

They really downplayed the ending to the classic Hollywood “single tear”. The reality is actually much darker. Turing really suffered in the end due to the chemical castration for a number of years, loosing both his motor and cognitive skills, before he committed suicide. Never being recognised for his part in the war effort during his life only known as a “degenerate” (gay man). A real stain in British history. The post humous pardon came far too late.

The machine couldn't have been named bamba. At least not after the mexican folk song. Because Alan invented the machine in 1936 (and later build it in 1943) and the song la bamba was released in 1958.

Oh my god, THANK YOU. I enjoyed this movie too, but the inaccuracies drove me nuts! I think they could've made an even better film if they HADN'T latched onto all those ridiculous Hollywood tropes that steered the story away from the facts. It's so disappointing to see such a spectacular moment in history get portrayed like just another !k00ky~scientist! narrative. Turing and Clark deserve better :/ This seems like a great series, and I can't wait to hear what you have to say about The Last Samurai!

I watched this movie on the plane after having read most of the book it was based on, Alan Turing: the Enigma. I was quite disappointed with the choices they took. Other big inaccuracies that should have been pointed out is that 1) they completely messed up his acknowledgement of his homosexuality (he was quite candid about it, shocking fellow Betchley Park workers in casual conversation, but only acted upon it later in life) and 2) he wasn't spending his last years trying to build a prototype computer in isolation (he was attached to several projects, writing one of the first programing manuals, and using those computers to run programs based on the research he was conducting at the time).

I've rewatched my fav C.H. vids too often so am now watching the Film videos, not for the subject but for the VIDEO's Author. I enjoyed this video. I disagree though. It wasn't a good movie, mostly because of the inaccuracies pointed out here, also for bad acting by bad (yet popular) Actors. Plus the usual insincere Hollywood manipulation that erodes the ACTUAL people and (hi)story. It also patronisingly painted thick, goopy layers of contemporary social values onto a different society. Could you give us a list of films that state "This is a true story" and or then proceed to portray the unaltered truth of history? Cause I can't think of any. In fact I bet nobody can. There. Challenge thrown down... anyone? And if there are none then that would suggest there should be no shock at film producers taking liberties on a story. They have to make the film enjoyable and make sence in the time expected. So therefore imho, you should give "Based on a true story" a rating out of 5 stars. 1 being practically bullshit like U571 and 5 being closely resembling the historical truth.

No movie Will ever be 100% accurate somethings are changed to make film more interesting or for a better flow. Documentaries are dor accuracy hollywood is to give you an idea of what happened but dor you to be more entertained and enjoy so will be interested in learing abiut what really happened, and Based is the big part which they tell you that part if it is real.
