The amount of trust people had in one another back then is a beautiful thing. The fact his grandfather trusted a stranger enough with that piece of paper, to not steal it, AND that that stranger recognized it's importance and was willing to help be part of the process - and not steal it, are a wonderful thing.

Larry Lajoie was more commonly known as Nap Lajoie, That is why I didn't recognize it at first. I'd have fainted, if I had found out this had been sitting in my closet all this time! (g) What an incredible story. All done by snail mail, in its time. It sounds almost like a fairy tale! Great video.

At 3:40, that shows that your grandpa was a smart man. Don't give them the out, because they might make a mistake. This is why I hate watching players admire their long balls. How many extra base hits were gone because they thought it would go over the fence, but it hit the wall?

Took him 9 years to look through it? I'm sure he was busy in Columbus Indiana?

Yeah they were tougher back then but you got to know pitchers today throw every pitch as hard as they can where the old timers did that once in awhile

And maybe that's a mistake. There's a reason why no one has won more games since the mound was lowered than Greg Maddux.

I hate when guys say "Pitchers today want to come out after 5 innings" it's because baseball is a different game than it was 100 years ago. It's more optimal for long term team success to not pitch every day. No pitcher wants to come out of a game if they're rolling, but statistically, you're way better safe than sorry. You've got 8 dudes making 7 figures to get 2-5 batters out every couple of nights, you might as well use them. Anyway, this man's grandpa was a G.
@MH3GL3 жыл бұрын
No one ever accomplished anything great "being safe". I agree, the players are paid so much now, they're no longer allowed to play - they're too protected. We will never see another Cal Ripken or Cy Young - and I don't think that's good for the game.

It is worse for the pitchers, too. I remember when Washington shut down Strasburg in the middle of a pennant race, and a couple years later, he needed Tommy John surgery, anyway. Walter Johnson pitched 110 shutouts in a 21-year career. These days, you wouldn't get 110 complete games in a season in the entire MLB. The problem is that no one is encouraged to throw sidearm anymore. That's how most of the old pitchers with great feats of endurance pitched.
@Jacobthekid283 жыл бұрын
@@wvu05 You also have to consider the fact that pitchers are probably throwing harder than ever. Even Bob Gibson said that he could throw in the upper 90s but didn't because he knew he had to pitch at least 7 innings a game. Its just a different ballgame nowadays. You have flamethrowing relief pitchers that know they only have to pitch 1 or 2 innings throwing as hard as they can because managers want that. The starting pitchers dont necessarily want that. I remember a clip of Max Scherzer when the manager came out to the mound to take him out and Scherzer kept shaking his head saying "This is my guy. This is my guy."
@wvu053 жыл бұрын
@@Jacobthekid28 Regardless, the whole idea is to protect the pitcher. I'm not saying that pitchers need to pitch a complete game every time out, but the obsession with 100 pitches has been harmful to the game. Pitchers back then also knew that they had to mix up their stuff. If pitchers are needing Tommy John surgery before they turn 25, the protection has clearly failed. Tommy John himself was 31 when he got it. Today, it's all about the fastball, and it has left us with the HR/K/BB fest that has become excruciating to watch.
