I'm curious about possible differences in dysregulation. Like, trauma dysregulation has roots in infancy with a mother with poor mirroring and mentalization so there's not just inability to discharge frustration or cope with sadness or other negative affect, but the window of tolerance is also narrowed with reduced capacity for positive emotions, so you'll see limited capacity for joy and alexithymia. Does the dysregulation associated with adhd also feature limited capacity for joy?

One of the most frustrating problems i dealt with in college was them telling me that ADHD is not a valid diagnosis to receive help in any sort of way from the staff. Im hoping things are better for newer generations, that crushed me. Might as well have said "sucks to be you". I still muddled through but had to essentially destroy my social life entirely to even do that

Firstly im so sorry to hear that 🥺 it’s completely not fair that you were made to feel like that as a student. Every single person should be allowed to be in a learning environment where they feel adequately supported and validated I did just wanna say it is getting better! Although i didnt benefit from it that much as i am now 5th year and about to graduate..my university in australia has an equitable learning services plan on offer for students with adhd. I benefited from it immensely (last term) bc i was able to have tutors aware of my condition without me needing to bring it up!..its not the kind of conversation i want to have to explain in detail to every working professional i encounter..not only that but i was offered a 1-week extension for my assignments that term (as an extra added layer of support!) so I wouldn’t feel as stressed..but what i love about my school is the fact that it’s arranged in a way that still encourages those of us with adhd to still hand it in on time and do our best. But if you need a break ..that’s also ok ❤ Kind of like a hey. Reminder. We as the university in general actually do wanna see you succeed! PS: its not by any means perfect bc lmao i didnt know such help existed until my last year of uni..[visibility issues of these support systems are still a thing] but hey at least its a step in the right direction!

I was late diagnosed because my adhd displayed mostly as maladaptive daydreaming or sorta hyper focusing on schoolwork. I had a few teachers who hated me because I would do my homework or read through class, which made me come off as inattentive, but most of my teachers loved me because I was clever and would deep dive into the topic I was being taught. But I still definitely have trauma regarding my weird over excitement, which lead to lack of friends my own age, or the childhood abuse from my parents over my "selective hearing," which was really just them not getting my attention first.

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 35. It took me 30 years to realize the shame put onto me by my kindergarten teacher has negatively impacted the perception of myself. I masked most of my life to mold my behaviors to what I thought everyone around me or society thought how I should behave or who I should be. The self-judgement, self-rejection, lack of self-esteem and self-confidence and the need to please others to feel loved and accepted led to trauma in various aspects and relationships within my life. I’m grateful I’m finally getting the healing I need and have the strength to be and live my most authentic self.

I know ADHD isn't diagnosed or considered a disorder unless there is impairment. But what about kids/people with ADHD "brain wiring" who were able to find ways to compensate and adapt to a neuro typical environment? If we are able to identify ADHD characteristics and confirm differences in brain function, wouldn't it be prudent to modify the environment and focus on building skill sets before the condition becomes a disorder? I think we understand (and I know from personal experience) there's a lot of added stress neurodivergent people undergo to keep up with neurotypical people and might this stress lead to depression later in life? What if we could get in front of the problem instead of reacting to it?

Pertaining “Escapsim”, I think that’s more about the lack of safety and security in the core and inner wounds. I believe I do this also, but it’s not purposely to escape or disassociate from reality, but in my reality there’s limited safety and security outside of me. So I tend to daydream while in the unsafe place. Meaning there’s some safety, and done unsafety all at the same time.

As somone who was diagnosed with adhd at a young age, I never knew what that meant. My mother always tried to tell me that I'm still great just the way I am, but she never taught me how I was different, or why I would struggle in school. All I knew was I had 4 little letters that were a part of me. It wasn't until I reached adulthood and started noticing all my friends and a handful of content creators with adhd and how they think and cope that I finally started to understand that it wasn't just that I wasn't trying hard enough.

Great chat. To that last question- I think that psychiatrists "objectivey" is an outsider look at ADHD , where the diagnosis is about how much you disrupted others. Now, with social media, people are seeing an internal perspective of what it is like. It always seemed normal to us to be this way (and our families act like that too). So we didn't see ourselves in the diagnostic criteria from an outside perspective. We do see ourselves in people's personal reflection.

Im told I'm great with customers and customer service at most jobs, my sometimes I say the wrong thing and people take it the wrong way. How am I supposed to manage EVERY social problem in society and keep on top of it all?! I love talking to people, but hate that im not suppose to connect with others in most jobs unless its a business job and you trying to sucker them into buying something. ( i hate those jobs.) Also, what kind of jobs are best with my ADHD? Where I'm least likely to say the wrong thing but can also help people?

As someone with a dissociative identity disorder: sometimes I really wonder if your brain kind of braids all your senses into one experience and the more stressed you are, the more information gets filtered out. Because our senses are physical information that gets processed by the brain, ptsd starts to form when the other senses are not possible to be processed later because processing those feelings meant something they gained a sense of safety or belonging from is actually not as safe or homing as they thought. Panic attacks or bore-outs are the brain rushing through the backed up information

I would like to say here that while I enjoyed the video, it's actually just a myth that ADHD is hereditary. It's actually not, it's all nurture. According to Dr. Gabor Mate who is an expert on trauma, addiction, and childhood development says that during infancy, a time in a person's life when their brains are developing the most and when they are the most helpless and vulnerable, if parents let's say have unresolved trauma and are highly stressed out, they're not going to be able to nurture the infant in a way that the infant needs to be nurtured. Because of that since the infant is so incredibly helpless, all they can do is tune it out, and since this coping mechanism was so adaptive, it stays with them despite it being maladaptive later on. Another thing to add to that, is that there actually has been an increase in ADHD in the past twenty or thirty years and genes don't change that quickly, (as a matter of fact genes actually take a million generations or about 25 million years to change). Now, as for the reason behind the increase in ADHD in recent decades is that people are living an increasingly more stressed and frenzied lifestyle than they did in the past. So, anyway that's my two cents. Boy, that felt good to get that out!

My adhd and my wife's adhd fits with the work we do. I can analyze problems and projects faster than anyone. My wife has energy for two. My kids are doing very good at school. @@hannahbunny2773Cultural differences and conditioning for a lack of better word. Patrick got close to it in the question about porn addiction and how different cultures view sex and such. The American education system guides students on a path to eventually be employees who follow rules in general and people who don't fit that model are seen as not "fitting in" to society. The Netherlands and Scandanvia seems to be a bit more open minded and flexible about possible paths.

This is was really informative, interesting that I arrived at this video today but to the point regarding ADHD, I don't know if I have it simply meaning I have not been diagnosed by a Dr but I have considered the possibility and according to some articles on this subject individuals who are born with specific medical conditions have a higher likelihood of also having ADHD, I have a perticuler diagnosed medical condition involving motor function I also have mild synthesia thus it's possible I may also have the other condition, but until I know for certain I tend to avoid assuming anything via self diagnosing I only speak to my diagnosed condition, I'd rather not guess regardless of how many times someone or something has implied that I have ADHD. I've gotten this assumption several times in recent years example question/reaction are you sure you don't have ADHD? I'm like until someone qualified to diagnose me can confirm it. I don't know. ADHD symptoms can be tricky to figure out unless you're trained to understand the symptoms as the individuals on the pannel are. the symptoms can also mimic autism, I'm familiar with Autism as someone close to me is Autistic hence I have a slight understanding of how the two conditions can be similar thus I prefer not to try and tackle and diagnose serious norilogical conditions on my own, it will remain a mystery for now but I've seen many videos in which individuals said they have not seen a specialist but feel that they have ADHD. I think it's great that we have more information available but I think it's best to be as sure as we can rather than risking misdiagnosing another neurological condition for ADHD.

It seems as though there would be a third component in addition to the genetic and nurture components to the condition. Dr. K was ver close to it when he talked about nurture. I’m referring to an epigenetic component, where parent’s activity to remediate the impacts of challenges related to frontal lobe and executive functioning result in new neural pathways that may change what genetic component is passed on to, and possibly expressed, in their progeny.!
