"Most importantly, to focus on how to fully express yourselves. Normally, in the traditional Asian society and education we are told to follow orders. However, if you want to be an artist, it's a different story. You have to show your emotions; To be yourself. Your mind has to focus on greater things. Understanding those parameters and then going beyond that, so that you can create artistry and create you own decisions as well. I think that's incredibly important, and much more important than just the simply technical side." Ray Chen

I had the pleasure of meeting Ray back in 2019 and those that met him would agree that he’s the most down to earth, kind, and approachable person you’ll meet. I love how he is continuing to impact out younger generation of musicians and inspiring a change and difference in our young children’s lives. Thank you Ray for being a Ray of sunshine and hope to our children.

I love that you stayed 6 months in Taiwan and fully immersed in the culture and feel the connection. Taiwanese people are almost always super hospitable, especially more in the countryside. I miss that. I hope my American born children will have such an experience some day and speak Mandarin as fluently as you do (very impressed by your linguistic skills-your musical skills and talent goes without saying). This recording is compiled very well-love how it promotes awareness of indigenous Taiwanese-I am totally fascinated and hope to some day visit east part of Taiwan (the pristine, untouched paradise). Also hope to hear you perform in person someday.

Ok. This gets into a lot of history and politics that can become very sensitive and controversial, but note that my compliments of Ray’s Mandarin fluency are in different sentences, referencing a different thought/idea/concept than his Taiwan immersion experience. I agree and am aware Mandarin is NOT Taiwanese. Mandarin has been the official language of instruction in Taiwan‘s education system for pretty much a full generation. Taiwanese DIALECT is primarily derived from a southern dialect from Fujian province. That influx of immigrants came as early as with Dutch invaders in 1600s. So Taiwanese is still a Chinese dialect like Mandarin but you are correct Mandarin is not Taiwanese. I regret any confusion in my comment and do not mean to offend. I apologize if I blurred the line between dialects and geography/history. Let’s leave on a positive note that we are Ray Chen fans, appreciate good music and love Taiwan with all its political and cultural complications :-)
