It's funny how chatGPT recommended exactly the most basic exercises and volumes that 'traumatised' my childhood. I always thought everyone has been 'tortured' by Sevcik, Flesch, Kreutzer and Fiorillo, but that doesn't seem to be the case, as even a great violinist like Ray didn't known about them. That being said, those exercises are pretty standard for eastern european violin schools (or so I imagine, in my own bubble!). ChatGPT is probably more agile and efficient in finding those sources. It is refreshing thought to see someone like Ray struggling with some passages: a reminder we're all still human and there's no glory without the necessary effort. Great video! ❤

@@xandraxandra1437 It's a wonderful supportive community.... and I can probably safely say here that I had a run in with an unsavoury character the other day who basically said that anyone taking up the violin after the age of 50 is wasting their time; how no one will be able to play Massenet's Meditation... which I said was on my wish list... unless they start by the age of 5 and that I'm living in a world of illusion where my tutor is just taking my money to keep me in ignorance. I was like 'whoooaahh'. I know I've got YEARS ahead of me and am not under any illusion. This person wrote PARAGRAPHS, I'm not kidding. And they're TwoSet followers(!) BUT anyone running someone down like this just never happens on their channel and if they even started, they'd be shot down in flames. The person (with a foreign name) wrote in a very mature way so I thought it was some middle aged lady with a grudge and a serious attitude problem. Turns out to be a 11y.o. lad who started the violin aged 3. However people I've since spoken to, think his Mum posted her hurtful comments. I was told to set my heights no higher than 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'!! This was after I'd said that it's not the technicalities of a piece that matter but rather that you play a simple piece well and mentioned Hilary's 'Twinkle Twinkle' (which I can recommend btw. It's exquisite). So you can see it's got to me. And as I'm nursing a fractured wrist atm I can't even get near my violin to practice... 😥

Gpt, for me, has been best used as a personal Jarvis that makes connections for later. Like “give me a table of frequencies for notes from C3 to C4” “What are the angles between molecules of different shapes?” “Show me a the equation for impact, then let’s use the values we discussed in table 3” When I ask it about consonance or dissonance, or harmonies, it gets bad at describing such experiential things. So far, gpt is still just a reflection of whatever it was trained on.

Ive been using it to learn Mari (a minority language from Russia, similar to the Finnish and Estonian languages) and it certainly works as a teacher in both fields, but it has its flaws, like not being specific or occasionally using a wrong translation or always using the formal phrasing of sentences. Overall it can definitely be an aid but it doesn't replace human teachers

It gave good advice in this video. Kreutzer 2 for practising ricochet was a big surprise. I wouldn't say AI is a good teacher though as it can't give feedback... yet. That would be a major game changer.

To answer your question about the Flesch system: "Is this what other people have been practicing the whole time?" Answer: "YES!" 😂😂😂 I literally fell out of my chair at your reaction to this!! And your reaction to the one string scale exercise after one measure was priceless! 🎼🎻🤘 The way I warm up with scales, and also how I have my students practice scales, is like a Galamian Flesch Combo Platter. Start with a major key (let's say D major). Metronome: quarter note = 60 1. Go through the Galamian three octave accelerated scale series (half notes all the way through 32nd notes) in the chosen key (D major in this example), and straight into the major arpeggio. The D at the end of the major arpeggio becomes the first D of the D minor scale. 2. Go through the whole accelerated series again, but in the parallel minor of whichever major scale you started with, finishing with the minor arpeggio (D minor in this example). Now, we can make a seamless transition, (still without stopping because every last note becomes a first note), into Flesch! (In any key, it will always be exercise 5 in the book, but starting at the 6/4 bar (arpeggiated series). The arpeggiated three octave series (6/4 bar) always starts with the minor arpeggio, so using D major as our example, we would have the Flesch book ready with D major.) 3. The D minor arpeggio that finishes the Galamian scale series is also the first bar of the Flesch arpeggiated series (exercise 5, starting at the 6/4 bar) so we just go directly into the second bar of the 6/4 section. Once we finish the Flesch three octave arpeggiated series (at the conclusion of the 6/4 section), this is the first time we will have stopped our bow (barring any unforeseen emergencies or natural disasters) since we first started with the D major scale in half notes (Galamian series) ages ago! 👏👏👏 So, quick water break, and then go through all of the one string scales in the Flesch book (exercises 1-4). I also like the Flesch book for chromatics and sixths. That's how I utilize Flesch, and how I have my students utilize it as well. I really loved what you said at the end of the video, about how valuable it is to try something new and not assume you already know everything lol! What I also gleaned from this is the value that can be had by going back and practicing etudes from books like Kreutzer and Dont which might seem "too easy" or below our playing level. That Kreutzer etude was the first huge moment you had where your playing transformed! How incredible is that!! Even in my mind, I was thinking "oh, a stupid Kreutzer etude, yeah right" 🙄 and how wonderful it is to prove ourselves wrong! 🎻😍 I think the credit here needs to go not to chatGPT (sorry, chatGPT), but to Kreutzer, whose etudes are accessible enough to violinists making that transition out of books like Whistler, still getting comfortable with new positions on the violin, difficult key signatures, etc., yet still just as valuable to accomplished violinists like yourself! I hope everyone who saw this will show their old dusty Kreutzer book some love and get to work on a not-so-easy-after-all etude! 🎻🎻🎻

I think it was interesting and perhaps a good change of pace for Ray in particular because he is knowledgeable with effective practice and the violin. He was able to discern what ineffectice and inefficient practice instructions were. Because he knew that, he could further refine his prompts until he got something that was worth practicing. Someone less knowledgeable.... Probably would not have gotten the same things out of it.

For the passage with the four f-sharps on every string, i suppose you, use this fingering 1-4-1-3 -and the back on the e string again with 1st, so you have one shift less, that makes the passage a bit easyer, at least for me. This was very fun to watch as usual Ray. I think A.I can become a good teacher depending on how well it knows said instrument and music. I say it can be a good counter of a teacher, especially if anyone don't have the appropriate money to hire a teacher until then. I say they can both co-exsist the teacher giving exercises to students as well from chatgpt recommendations they might not have heard of to help improve the student. I can see it like that. Also Ray, I have discovered he instrument I enjoy playing now. Would love a video of you going through it. It's a digital wind instrument known as a areophone. Its a pyscal instrument small n compound. It carries digital aspects that can play sounds of any instruments through apps which is pretty neat. The interesting thing about this is some of these etudes I am learning right now in my own violin lessons (I think I've spent at least half a year on Kreutzer 9), or have learned in the past. Figuring out the exact "this is the point of this etude" is something that definitely didn't stick with me when I was younger, but is easier to articulate as I am taking lessons as an adult.

AI teaches calmly, but the drawback is that it is one-way. Human teachers don't always meet people who are compatible with them. I guess Ray can change accents from American to Aussie depending on location--if he is in Oz or the US or in places where he thinks the American accent is more acceptable. This is similar to Gillian Anderson who grew up in the UK but was born in the US and also lived in the US. I forgot the exact term for this bilingual phenomenon which is different from code mixing and code switching or L1 interference that happens with Eddy and Brett.
