Don't you know that more than 50% of the buildings in the imperial citadel were destroyed by the French and the Americans during the Indochina and American wars . Unfortunately the Vietnamese government doesn't have enough funds to rebuild quickly all the lost buildings in that historical site . They are doing their best to rebuild and renovate step by step the damaged structures with the entrance fees collected from the visitors . That's the reason why that palace still looks quite empty . There are more interesting things to do and see in Huê such as the ancient pagodas and temples , the imperial mausoleums that were luckily not damaged by the wars , the boat cruise on the Perfume River , the trekking in the Bach Ma national park and the DMZ ( Demilitarized Zone ) that used to separate VN in two enemy states during the war .

Hey, thank you so much for your comment and useful information about Hue! True, the citadel looked empty and we didn't know the reasons, althought it was interesting and beautiful anyway! Unfortunately we weren't there for long enough and we had to stay right in the centre for work. We did enjoy the night market, and even just walking around was great. Bach Ma national park looks stunning on the pictures I've just found on the internet! We certainly have more than one reason to go back! :)
