THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST by Oscar Wilde 🎧📖 FULL Audio Book | Greatest🌟AudioBooks - "The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People" is a play by Oscar Wilde. First performed on 14 February 1895 at St. James's Theatre in London, it is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personæ in order to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways. Contemporary reviews all praised the play's humour, though some were cautious about its explicit lack of social messages, while others foresaw the modern consensus that it was the culmination of Wilde's artistic career so far. Its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest Wilde's most continuously popular play.
The successful opening night marked the climax of Wilde's career but also heralded his downfall. The Marquess of Queensberry, father of Lord Alfred Douglas, an intimate friend of Wilde, planned to present Wilde a bouquet of rotten vegetables and disrupt the show. Wilde was tipped off and Queensberry was refused admission. Soon afterwards, however, their feud came to a climax in court, where Wilde's gay double life was revealed to the Victorian public and he was eventually sentenced to imprisonment for being homosexual. Wilde's notoriety caused the play, despite its success, to be closed after just 86 performances. After his release, he published the play from exile in Paris, but he wrote no further comic or dramatic work.
The Importance of Being Earnest continues to be loved and well reviewed ever since its premiere over 125 years ago!

In fact, now that I think about it, perhaps the reason I actually like this play so much, is because I was never forced to read it. I remember having to read various books and no matter how enjoyable they may objectively be, they have been soured by the obligation of having to read them. Actually, I can hardly recall one book that was on the obligatory reading list that I enjoyed reading, or would like to read again, no matter how iconic and supposedly good they are. Maybe it'd be better if students were given a wide selection of books on any given topic or of any given time period from which they could freely choose. It's really a shame so many valuable pieces of work were ruined for so many people for the sole reason of being made to read them...

I was the narrator. I have several times reviewed the comments on this FREE recording. I have been surprised at how mean-spirited, nasty, vile-spoken, ignorant, xenophobic and downright cruel some people have been in the various KZbin versions of this project. These people do not deserve to be exposed to literature, whether read aloud by professionals or amateurs, or (supposing any of them are actually literate) by themselves.
