Cloud’s love for Tifa was why FFVII happens. It’s not even bias, it’s a fact. He tried to join SOLDIER to be someone special to Tifa. And if he didn’t hear Tifa’s voice at the train station, he would’ve never regained consciousness. Tifa is the most important character to Cloud.

There isn't such a thing as THE most important - Tifareth the sephiroth from kabbalah is the symbol here. It's inspiration was elaborated many times on yt. Sephiroth and Hojo take away his humanity, Zack gives him a goal, Tifa anchors his being, Aerith unlocks his humanity, the rest of the group give him a family. From the concept it was always a group thing and a story of life and death. There's a reason that at the end of og Cloud only thinks of Aerith and the promised land.

She allows him to remember what he can and if he gets something wrong she just helps him instead of correcting him. It’s really how you’re supposed to handle people with memory loss. The crazy thing for me is that, in comparison to the OG, Rebirth (and Remake to an extent) really shouldn’t have had soooo many Cloud/Tifa moments. But I’m sooo glad they do. In the OG, it’s not until Mideel that you start seeing those moments with the 2. I’m excited to see how they expand their relationship even further. The way I see it, they are presenting their relationship as one that is “naturally” progressing: In Remake, they share a hug together. But Cloud hugs a little too tight, briefly forgetting his absurd strength (which I found adorable because this suggested he’s never hugged anyone, and was so focused on comforting Tifa he forgot all about his strength). In Rebirth, not only do they hug. They also hold hands, have intimate moments/conversations, and K.I.S.S. So far part 3, how do they take that to the next level? Simple. Tifa keeps her promise of helping him. Only for her to discover, Cloud never abandoned her, and was there in her moment of need at Nibelheim. And when Cloud finally becomes his true self… their relationship will skyrocket to the next level. See you guys in 2027 for Under The Highwind scene 😎

I would like them to expand the experience they both receive from the lifestream. Sure, we'll obviously need for cloud's mind to be pieced back together and all that, but what I would like to see is them expand on the effects of two people, inextricably linked by powerful memory, being physically submerged in the lifestream. When I played OG FF7 the twist was interesting, but the relationship progression following the event read like cliffs notes. Instead I would like to see it hammered home just how much that experience in the lifestream taught Tifa about Cloud, and vice versa. They are swimming in the most powerful entity on the planet which is itself made out of memory. Imply heavily, or even show us, that they come to know each other in a very visceral and otherworldly way. Make the inevitable scene of Tifa's tearful realization really hit hard. Instead of just set pieces that briefly summarize true events, let Tifa feel the full extend of the memories, give her the full context of why Cloud suppressed them in the first place. Could you imagine how it would feel to relive all the messed up stuff Cloud went through? Actually feel it in its entirety? Then have the revelation as to why he made the decisions he did? It would be an insane emotional roller coaster for her. Now imagine what would happen to Cloud's self esteem knowing exactly how Tifa saw Cloud, and what he meant to her throughout her life. These were two people who constantly got in the way of their own happiness and the lifestream is an opportunity to break that barrier down and let them see each other unburdened in renewed light. Square have already greatly increased the natural affection they have for one another in both parts. What I propose I think has the potential to create an extremely emotional scene for the two when they finally embrace one another without hesitancy.

@@Otis-Spunks I fully agree with that the OG made this feel like cliffnotes afterward. It's kind of jarring that you get this eye opening scene and your reactions afterward hardly cover something so impactfull. But honestly I felt like the characterization in OG was always cliff notes. People read to much inbetween the lines. Now in Remake/Rebirth its so much more intense. So checking on that scene again after seeing these characters in a new light is weird. But I guess that's because we've become accustomed to their new selves? Anyway I do wonder how far SE will take this. In the end it's not High School Musical VII I get that. But at the same time you kind of can't imagine any other way for them to do it post lifestream. In the end FF7 is a character story. And this is the core of that story. Devs even agreed to that. The Gongaga scene already kind of made a silent promise on how the lifestream scene will go I think. But afterward until the final confrontation? You'd wonder how they will handle that. I mean it would be kind of lame for them to have this experience and revelations. Only for them to then get distracted by world ending stuff until the end. Then you get one scene under the Highwind and that's it. It would go against all the constant set up scene to scene, chapter to chapter they've put in Remake/Rebirth. But if they will cover them having some meaningful dialogue and an intimate moment or two, or if she will basically hang on his arm for the remainder of the game. That's yet to be seen.

@@oscarmorales8484 iirc it has been communicated via the Material Ultimania that the Gold Saucer dates are fan service and not purposefully linked to the story. (However, I would disagree when it comes to Aerith's dialog on the skywheel. It provides a lot of meaningful context.) But even with that said you still notice a significant hesitancy even in that moment between Cloud and Tifa. Triumphant as it was, it significantly lacks commitment both within the moment and when considering the context of Cloud's state of mind. The fake out, hug to kiss, I think represents this perfectly, as well as the childish awkwardness when exiting the gondola. Its a great scene, but it clearly represents their inexperience. In flower terms: it was a bud, not a bloom.

I think there isn't a canon date as in this one is chosen as the canon playthrough selection, because as you pointed out, they made it so it didn't impact the larger story. OTOH, they have also said that all the dates are canon in the sense that the high affection version represents how Cloud really feels about each character, regardless of which one actually happens in a given playthrough and they recommend you experience them all to see how Cloud stands with each person. It shows Cloud only has romantic feelings for Tifa. The writers didn't just accidentally have him only make a move for one girl. He loves the others but it's different kinds of love. I think that's the important thing the dates communicate taken as a whole. I would agree that it was only the beginning, Under the Highwind should be the full bloom. Can't blow it all this early. I agree with your other comment too, about how the lifestream is really one of the most intimate and personal things you could imagine for both Cloud and Tifa and needs to be shown as such.

After play so much of Rebirth I can see an interesting pattern: even if the Gold saucer dates are supposed to be outside the story , Cloud and Tifa get all those deep romantic moments in it. Meanwhile Aerith it goes lesser or just not the same deep up (untill the end maybe abit) And I see more of those so-called Clerith moments in the side missions like that one Cosmo Canyon with the star signs or the date quest at Costa del Sol. Cloud and Tifa's relationship is the only relationship (along with Zack and Aerith) that is NECESSARY to be a romance for the game's plot! Everything else can be a friendship and will even be BETTER as a friendship, but Cloud and Tifa need to be romantic because of their story and plot, that's why they're canon. This was an amazing video and incredible breakdown of their dynamic and their importance, and especially of how well Rebirth highlighted them in a VERY special and unique way, unlike any other relationship, exactly why all reviews talked about them and them alone in this light.

In order for the story to make sense, Cloud’s feelings for Tifa have to be romantic-that’s the whole jumping off point to his journey (wanting to be noticed by her, to be her hero, to be her special existence; this has already been established in the game and by the novels). Cloud’s relationship with Aer doesn’t have to be romantic at all and it still wouldn’t change the story. He is affected by guilt over not preventing her death. You’re talking about player choice for the gondola ride. Player choice stops there, even in OG. There are no branching paths. In the Lifestream event, Cloud’s feelings come to light that even Tifa didn’t know and they confirm their mutual feelings. They are end game. You can’t choose to spend your last night with Aer in spirit or go visit the FC or the church. Cloud spends it with Tifa. The compilation hammers it home. They now live together and raise a family. There is absolutely a canon couple.

Great video. The development of Cloud and Tifa's relationship is one of the best alterations Rebirth made to the story. Moving some of the revelations from Part 3's Lifestream sequence to Part 2 was a great idea - I think it will make the story more digestible overall. I also appreciate the fact that you point to why Sephiroth can't just kill Tifa. If Sephiroth just kills Tifa, he would essentially martyr her - Cloud would mourn but eventually rise up and seek revenge. But if Sephiroth can first discredit Cloud and Tifa in each other's eyes, he can sever their bond and weaken Cloud on a deeper level, making him more vulnerable to Sephiroth's influence.

Exactly. It's not just sadism or gambling, it's _tactical._ Sephiroth's goal is to break Cloud's will, so he can subsume him. Tifa is the one reinforcing his will and sanity. Killing Tifa would galvanize Cloud's will until Sephiroth is dead. That won't accomplish the goal. The only way Sephiroth can break the bond between Cloud and Tifa without hardening Cloud is if _Cloud severs it himself._

I think in the ultimania it is said that the Gold Saucer dates happen outside of the story (because they’re supposed to happen at the same time) but they took careful consideration to illustrate how Cloud would react to each person in the party, meaning each one is Cloud’s true feelings towards each person.

its not even shipping wars at some point its just realizing what the story is doing if you say it as unbiased as you can. cloud does care for tifa, i would say he even loves her dearly. but aerith is important too as she pulls cloud out of his shell in the early parts of the game. its like aerith helps him be a better person and being good for tifa motivates him to want that more. basically they both push cloud to be better in different ways. also cloud and tifa are basically canon. but people dont ship because of how canon something is. i think its okay to like cloud x aerith as long as youre not toxic (probably asking too much of shippers tho)

@@demifolk8940 100%, People don’t understand that without Aerith being as forward with cloud as she was, Tifa never would gain her own confidence, in this game and in the original Tifa actually spends most of it making cloud worse, because she allows him to miss remember things because she is afraid of losing him. But when aerith dies that effects her too, that was one of her best friends, and instead of lying to cloud she then goes and becomes his pillar when he needs her, to make up for all of the things she did to him. People can’t understand that for some reason like they both are PIVOTAL in clouds development, and not only that they are extremely important to eachother. Yet all people want to do is midigate the others impact to make their ship more valid or something it’s so dumb. Like as someone who played remake first and then the original, and then went back through to play remake and rebirth. It is so obvious that the games push this Aerith cloud Romance, because it leads to one of the most heartbreaking scenes in video game history, when she’s effing murdered before his very eyes. Like that is traumatic, and to try and say he didn’t love her actively ruins that moment and makes it not as hurtful, it’s supposed to be one of three most traumatizing moments in clouds life.

This idea that tifa is suppose to correct cloud on how he remembers things when she is confused if she's the one that is wrong is just not it. She spends most of the time questioning what is real because of the head injury she sustained and is worried that she is misremembering things because of it. Even if she knew completely and 100% that cloud wasn't there that day (which he was) her and aerith collectively decide to withhold info from cloud for his own good. They see how the mention of zack screws with him and are worried his mental state can't take it. Trying to frame Tifa this way is negating her value and impact. You yourself are making her into something she is not and she's not a manipulator or a liar. Aerith has her place and value in cloud's life of course as she holds this place and value in all the crews lives, but the impact and role that tifa holds in clouds life is meant to have a bigger impact. Even the va for cloud has said this. It's not meant to be disrespectful or put down aerith and what she means to cloud but to uplift tifa and cloud's relationship and what they mean to each other. Aerith's role as a cetra is to save the planet and Tifa's role is to save cloud.

I somehow found myself almost crying for Tifa at the end...lost her home, family, friends, everything she owned, everything she knew, then in Remake her new best friend Jessie and her bar and livelihood, then in Rebirth she sees cloud being nuts and wonders if he's fake, then in spite of all he does, she stays with him anyway, cloud is all over the place but she remains firm and keeps him from going off the rails until Sephiroth is finally able to hold her back...and then she loses her new bestie Aerith and then sees cloud go nutser-er than before, the lifestream having shown her what's wrong with him and seeing him walk the route anyway and obviously no longer acquainted with reality. The devs weren't lying when they said we'd feel closer to these characters than any other...yup. They removed most of the aerith romance present in the original game, she and Cloud seemed quite incompatible in this and I was glad for that, knowing about Zack this time thru (those two are cute too). Aerith confused me at the end talking about "liking" cloud and "knowing where she stands" ...in Japanese, Cloud responds using 仲間, meaning a member of a group of friends, tribe, or family. This makes more sense to me, if aerith was acknowledging no kissy kissy. Hope she finds Zack someday...

Dude props, great song. I’m reminded what Yuffie said in the Ancient Temple about Cloud being unhinged: “Tifa just needs to crack the whip.” Then later in the temple Tifa stops cloud from killing one of the Turks. I’m losing count how many times she’s stopped Cloud from killing people. Yuffie is there for a couple of Cloud and Tifa’s important scenes. She’s listening at the door in Gongaga(“Kiss”) and is at the reactor in Nibelheim. If you do her Skywheel date you learn she knows Tifa had a crush on him before. I didn’t realize until watching this video that she’s sort of a voyeur into their relationship.

Love this! Cloti is everything to me! I never thought in a million years we’d see them ever share a kiss. I swear I squealed like a school girl when I saw that for the first time! That gives me hope that we’ll see some more romantic moments between them that we never thought we’d see! Tifa is everything I love in a girl! Well they did say that they want to things to be less ambiguous and they really wanted to flesh out the characters. Given that statement it’s really no wonder tifa has so many scenes. In the og people were so divided about who meant more to cloud and before part 3 a lot of people thought it was aerith, it wasn’t until the ls scene where we discovered that cloud and tifa has had crushes on one another since they were kids and his whole reason to become a soldier is because of her. This really threw the story for a loop so suddenly and made people wonder why she tifa didn’t seem more important to cloud throughout part 1 and 2. @@jamelgallagher6602 I find even in the OG game you pick up on a lot of little clues to their relationship on a replay. It's definitely not obvious though, and mostly takes a backseat storywise. For me it wasn't the lifestream when I realized it though, it was when she left the group because she refused to leave Cloud when you find him in Mideel. It felt like the game very clearly telling me with the actual game mechanics that these two characters are tied together and you either have both or neither. I enjoy what the remakes have done, for a lot of the characters including them.

I love everything about this video. The first ffvii media I consumed was advent children, and then I played crisis core that built my foundation of cloti and zerith. I’ve always loved cloud and tifa interaction because they seem so *human* compared to most couples I’ve seen in the media, and even as a kid I found the subtlety of their relationship beautiful and found myself rooting for them. I love aerith as a character, but I just don’t find her and cloud as a couple interesting enough because for me it’s like the typical brooding guy and cheerful girl dynamic I’ve seen countless of times everywhere. It’s like, they made her so charming that ‘of course’ your main character would fall for her. Tifa’s story on the other hand, would seem small and dull in comparison. Yet she is one of the most grounded characters in the series, she might not be as mysterious and special, but her relationship with cloud makes the most sense because for me, a realistic relationship isn’t perfect. You don’t fall head first into it, you don’t change overnight for it, but you *do* work for it, struggle with it, and fight to protect it. All these qualities are present in cloud and tifa’s relationship. They simply endure and persevere ❤

I like how for once how you detail why the CloTi romance works in making the story of the Remake saga a much more compelling narrative, instead of digging yourself deep into into the endless hole of the shipping/canon debate stuff that doesn’t really need to be discussed. I hope you can also one day make an analysis on why Remake saga so far actually does a better job in presenting the romance development far more than the OG, where I’ve felt under the opinion that a lotta issues arose in how romance was exactly presented in OG. Limits of the writing, and the angle of interpretation, is why I feel there’s been this level of contention amongst the fandom over Cloud’s supposed lover where I feel could’ve been avoided if the developers presented the romance development much better than what we’re left with in the OG. There’s no doubt in my mind the CloTi scenes in the latter half were special, and it being pretty canonical engdame as far as I’m aware of it, but I really do feel romance development in the OG wasn’t always one of its stronger aspects because of the limits the devs were faced with in both tech and writing at the time. Especially when it got people into debates of ships and angles on the canon even with the expanded material released later down the line. That’s why I felt that the changes in the Remakes made for FF7 in expanding Cloud and Tifa’s development were necessary in bumping up the romance to make what the creators want to achieve much more digestable, even when we’re still left with all this discussion of differences in shipping and perceiving how things are, as the story we’re left with now does the job for us through visual language and presentation of body language to build up the romance development in a way the OG could not hope to achieve. But in the end, we still have to thank the OG for what it is and still being a memorable experience, and at least giving the devs a framework on where and how they can improve upon it, and what we’re given now in the Remakes wouldn’t exist without the devs carefully crafting on it while still understanding OG

I agree, I never care about these romantic angles in games and movies because they just feel like bait for the people that gravitate towards that. Granted these characters are so well written and I might have a personal weak spot to this specific set up do to personal attributes and reasons. But even then I just check out with other stories that have this sort of tone. But here first and foremost it feeds into the plot. FF7 is a character story to a huge degree the more I ponder it. It's absolutely crucial for the story to have this element dialed to eleven. It's also just compelling set up secondary to that. Where most romantic tales fall in the same old boring tropes. I think all of this combined makes it meaningful to the game. But the story without this would be weaker for it. FF7 has such a strong connection to the party members. And beyond that there's the connection between these two.

This was so amazing! Thank you so much for this. It’s funny because if you pick and pull parts of the story out of context it can seem like Cloud is romancing both women, but when you look at the overarching story, themes, and character arcs it’s obvious that Cloud and Tifa have a special bond. While Cloud listened to some of Aerith’s vulnerable thoughts, he never felt close enough to talk to her about the fact that he’s going insane. Also, one thing most shippers seem to leave out is that he is incredibly thirsty for Tifa. It’s so obvious even Yuffie teases him for it XD. Another interesting dynamic I noticed is that in battle cut scenes they are often shown fighting together in the same shot like they are partners. In the Rude, Reno, and Elena fight in the beginning of Rebirth there is a fight with Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith. There is a shot of Cloud and Tifa fighting back to back while Aerith is behind them. He definitely expected "something" when they went back together to her room. When I played the OG as a teenager the internet wasn't as present as it is now, so there were no theories or opinions of others to look up. Or at least I didn't do that. But I always thought the "romance" between Cloud and Aerith seems forced and for me it felt pretty one sided with Aerith being the extroverted one. So when I learned that most people saw a romantic connection in Cloud and Aerith I was shocketh :D Cause I didn't have that feeling at all in my playtrough. And of course when the TifaCloud Lifestream scene was happening there was no doubt about Tifa and Cloud being the canon couple. It always felt like Aerith was more of a "decoy romance", with everything making sense as soon as Zack comes to the picture and when we learn the real reason of Cloud trying to join SOLDIER. Which was always Tifa of course. And I don't wanna downplay Aerith here. She plays a huuuuge role of course. She saves the effing planet! But the one saving Cloud is Tifa.

I had the same response and playing through the remake trilogy now just codified that feeling. I never get the sense that Cloud enjoys being around Aerith, as she's the one constantly grabbing him and pulling him aside. Cloud GOES to Tifa, and is way more like himself. Even at the end, when Cloud gets the White Materia from Aerith, it still seems like he's just humoring her. Yes he clearly cares about her don't get me wrong, it just feels so forced, like you said, as some sort of decoy relationship only to make what happens after more impactful.

Your analysis and breakdown of how Rebirth handled their relationship from a writing and storytelling perspective put into words what I have been trying to express since February 29th. The way that you connected all the dots from Remake->Rebirth and their relationship in OG and the foreshadowing of what is to come in Part 3 was simple and clear yet captured the drama of this story and these characters. And you made really great points about the Trilogy's storytelling overall - that it's deepening the messages and themes and impact of the original story we loved, not turning it into something unrecognizable for shock value. This was also really entertaining and engaging to watch - you have a fantastic screen presence, your editing is excellent, and your use of humor and delivery is fabulous! Ultimately, what I love most is that you really made it clear what FFVII is really about, the human condition and how we are all trying to find and accept ourselves among life, loss, love, and tragedy. Cloud and Tifa's relationship is one of the most powerful vehicles through which we experience those messages and themes in FFVII and it's why it resonates so deeply with so many people even nearly 30 years later. It isn't perfect, there are trials and tribulations and misunderstandings, but they truly care about each other for who they ACTUALLY are - and that love and bond helps them get through the tough times so they are stronger on the other side. They are one of the most compelling couples in fiction and your video nails how Rebirth in particular develops and shows it at this stage of the Remake Trilogy. Kudos!!

It's insanity that after 27 years this debate is still going on. Not only is Cloti canon, but it's arguably more canon than the vast majority of FF relationships. Why? because unlike things like Garnet and Zidane, Tidus and Yuna, or even Squall and Rinoa, the story of FFVII depends on Cloud and Tifa being in love. With all those other relationships they just start when the game starts and nothing really depends on it. But FFVII can't even start without Cloud and Tifa. Without their relationship there is no Cloud, there is no backstory, there is no "why" behind everything that happens. The entire story falls apart, which becomes EXTREMELY clear when you look at advent children and ESPECIALLY all the extremely poor takes Cleriths have about it.

Here's the problem. Unlike those other romances you mentioned following 7's release, a lot of how stuff revolving around romance throughout the OG game felt like it wasn't the best presented aspect of the experience, where while the experience of the plot was memorable, it threw people into a lot of this interpretation discussion. Can you blame people for debating when there's so much that goes on that throws players on the loop of whether there is a canonical framing or if the real romance was *really* as player-choice as people thought it was like other games that happens to give romance choices. Clearly both limits in writing and technology, and the intents of the devs on the romance development within the main plot itself not always having the best implementation, really fueled the conflict of interests of an aspect the fans really cared about that the devs didn't predict to such a high extent. There's even the debate on the angle of how if there's a love triangle or that there's no romance at all, even with the inclusion of special scenes with Cloud, Tifa and Aerith like FC, LS, and the Highwind Scene, and I can see to some extent why. It's cuz the development from Cloud himself and whomever the game presents as his love interest, whether it'd be player choice and interpretation or the devs' intended romance choice for the plot like Tifa, the moments with Cloud and either girl to showcase romance development don't always have the best presented buildup like dialogue and moments within the main story that tailors to romance outside of those aforementioned special moments (and in certain cases of player choice of dialogue options and the GS date), and Cloud not showcasing much of his feelings towards either girls before the LS sequence. Let's not forget that somehow there even exists two versions of the Highwind Scene based on affection that gets people debating on thinking you can get Cloud to affirm his feelings for Tifa or not. That's why I get pretty pissy thinking about OG's romance, since seeing how much contention the fans have over this, I partly blame the devs for not making the experience of the OG's romance much better presented and resorted to using a lot of spin-off and extra material released later down the line to try to clarify things that only resulted to more debates, and am just glad that the Retrilogy really fixes the overall presentation and intent of making CloTi's romance an essential part of the narrative through improving its development through the main plot and showing Cloud's relationship with each party member through visual language.

Also rebirth on the other hand does give us more clarity on Cloud & Aerith relationship dynamic. Aerith for sure developed feelings for cloud too the same with Cloud. Then the final church scene Aerith confesses that she likes cloud. But she's not sure what kind of "likes" she refers to, she may be hinting that she wants to hear Cloud's feeling/comment about that, but then Cloud didn't respond her statement and just being shy. That's when Aerith got the clue and realize that's where they stand for and she gets her closure about their relationship before she say goodbye to him for real. None can deny Cloud's affection to Aerith is there and he cares for her a lot too. But it's a great story telling that he doesn't see Aerith in "romantic" way..

fyi, Cloud has optional dialogue in the church scene: EN / JP Yeah, Next time / Yeah, Of course I mean, why not / Because we're firends Regardless of what line we get, it doesn't effect the story coz both lines still convey similar intention. In JP, "we're friends" is a more straightforward answer, while the other is a little nicer. In EN, their relationship nature is shown by Aerith's "At least I know where we stand". Those words are said when you realized you don't share mutual romantic feelings.

Japanese scene frames what was said a bit differently, Aerith pushes the idea of them 2 making more memories Cloud can respond that she sees her as a friend or just agrees yes lets make more memories. Its still vague but imo the body language and gestures alone show the interest is mutual just if Cloud isnt romancing her it might be platonic or just him not truly understanding what he wants because his mind is still broken. Besides in Remake part 1 when she warns him not to fall in love with her he asserts hes still coming for her, I really do think hes just not aware how much he truly cares with how trauma can make you doubt a lot of things even feelings of love. Even in the Tifa date he brings up Aerith probably still has feelings for Zack signaling hes probably focusing on Tifa now that he thinks Aerith might not like him in that way and even asked if she still cared in Gongaga only to throw shade at Zack not being there for her, these arent actions youd do if you only considered someone a friend with nothing to look beyond that.

Player sure has freedom and get different narrative in their playthrough. Even so, the story doesn't change. Cloud's feelings doesn't change based on player choice. It's reflected in the gondola date. If you don't mind, here's my opinion: Cloud can show his affection to women, including Aerith, without being in love with them. Cloud cares about Aerith's well being. His response about Zack is how a friend showing concern. A bit personal here, but what Cloud does to Aerith in Gongaga and Tifa's date reminds me of my guy friend to me back then. He shows his concern coz he knew Aerith still has feelings for Zack and Zack's death news must be hard for her. For me, Cloud loves Aerith. But love doesn't always mean romantic. In Rebirth, we have Tifa and Aerith confessed to Cloud. With Tifa, he reassured her with a hug (and a kiss) when she's questioning their closeness. With Aerith, he deflected them. In GS he moved the topic to Zack/Tifa. He only did something after Aerith told him "just until the ride is over". With Aerith saying that, I think she actually already understands Cloud's heart. Cloud himself wanted to make her happy, hence he gave her an interlocked handhold. That's where he drew the line. Aerith appreciated that hence she thanked Cloud after they got off of the gondola. And Cloud said "he didn't do anything", coz he genuinely wanted to comfort her. Imo, the dream date is more about Aerith confirming her feelings for Cloud. And she's confused. However, Cloud didn't do anything to reassure her confusion about her feelings for him. His response to Aerith is very different with Tifa's. I think if he has a bit romantic feelings for her, I expect him to initiate something like he did to Tifa. Furthermore, If you pay attention on their sq dates in CdS, Cloud acts "cold" to her advances. However, in the dream date, She's happy to know that Cloud actually wants to make more memories with her and enjoys her company. If we have Cloud saying "because we're friends", Aerith looks a bit dejected. It's because Cloud acts "cold" like he did in CdS. However, whether we get "friend" or "of course", the rest of the scenes are still the same. Because both lines has the same essence. I saw someone said the optional line seems like one sentence split into two. Coz if we combine "mochiron" and "nakama dakarana", it becomes "Yeah, of course. Because we're friends" And I think it's a good interpretation. In short, Cloud and Aerith may have romantic moments, but for me, even until the end they don't have that romantic bond. Aerith even in Remake already said to him "Even if you think you have, it's not real". And I think Cloud and Aerith understand this. What I see in Cloud and Aerith is a beautiful deep friendship. Two people who are initially connected through one beloved person (Zack) but in a short time they developed a strong bond and become an important presence for each other. That's my opinion and sorry for the long ass reply 🙏

@@sincerelyme77 I still think half of it being vague is due to him not recognizing his own feelings and feeling split between on who to chose and he doesnt even know who he truly even is yet, the way he regrets losing Aerith in AC I dont think is on the same level as someone like Zack. Both meant a lot to him but its clear who he prioritizes when he wants to be forgiven, you can still frame Zack as him blaming himself for not being able to act and yet only Zack comes to him not the other way around. As for Aerith being a bit confused its because she had future memories in part 1 and she knows her death will really affect him greatly if he does fall in love with her which I feel did happen but he didnt properly get to express it so he broke down crying losing someone really valuable to him, I feel Barrets date foreshadows of him telling Cloud if he likes someone tell them before its too late and Cait Siths fortune which warns him he will lose what he cherishes most. That and repeatedly throughout both parts theyre called a couple but they never directly disagree with anyone they just roll with it and of course Zack finding out Aerith has feelings for Cloud via Marlene in another world. Square really put them in an odd zone, not outright confirming they love each other but strongly implying they do, probably to keep both ships afloat until part 3 just lets Tifa take center stage. And just a bonus point but mental trauma even in real life can make it hard for someone to be authentic or in some cases vulnerable in any way hence him not exactly committing, even in on the way to a smile novel which is before AC Tifa asks Cloud if he loves her but he just stays silent probably due to a fear he might lose her too. But Id still never say Tifa is just a platonic friend despite his hesitance, I just find it silly folk write off its impossible where both dont have feelings for each other because of X when theres a good chunk of evidence its reciprocal.

I mean when you think about it, everything they have ever known and loved has been destroyed or killed in some way or another, and the only things they have left are each other. People can say what they want about his relationship being romantic or just a strong family like one, but nonetheless, they've truly lost everything. Their parents, their home, their friends, Tifa lost the bar and her home, Cloud lost himself and was tortured and experimented on. Thank you for this awesome video, loved your appreciation for the importance of their relationship. They're definitley the most developed and captivating couple. They made an cliché trope (the childhood friends to lovers) sooo much more intriguing. I always immediately feel the tension and hype, when they have a moment alone, especially because they have such a strong presence together. They really nailed the progress and realism of their development. There's this constant longing for each other, but a big wall, that stops them from getting closer. Yet slowly the wall is breaking and you can feel and see it with their body language aswell. From doubting each other and confusion in Kalm, where they're standing far away in the room (very distant), to later being vulnerable with each other, closer then ever (in Gongaga almost kissing) and calming each other with a simple hand gesture. The makers really care about Tifas and Clouds relationship, it's beautifully fleshed out, but it has it's ups and downs and where part 2 ended, with tifa not talking to cloud at all...that really makes me excited for their relationship in the third game.... (I just really hope they get their well deserved happy ending together)

The main reason I prefer Tifa is the end game for Cloud is because she is literally the only one who cares about Cloud before all the mess (SOLDIER, Sephiroth, Mako) untill the very end (He went doo bee doo), just simply a boy/man named Cloud, The others respect/notice either him because of his ex SOLDIER's tittle or his ressemblances with Zack, I dont care how the other side of the ship downplays Tifa's role in this game, to me they just don't have comprehensive understandings of FF7, Many of Cloti fans on another hand respect and love Aerith, I love Aerith how can I not, I just disagree to romanticize their relationship, as she said "I really like you, but the thing is... there's a different between liking... and "liking"" Let me tell you what, this is quite common phrase in shoujo manga, like so common, and this indicates platonic relationship at its best. This is a great take imo. I have similar sentiments. Always being a constant to him in his life even when he doesn't realize that himself is massive for his character growth once he finds out. You just hope they do it properly. Also I would add that there's one person who also shows this before his ex SOLDIER persona (other than his mom) and that's Zack. No wonder he got so messed up after his death. Zack is a gem. Maybe not a real hero like Cloud. But in the hearts of everyone he sort of is, what a guy. I'm sure the guys don't respect Cloud just because of his background in Soldier, actually I think it's the opposite especially for Barret. Despite it's true that Tifa is the only one who knows the real Cloud and the one who supports him since the beginning, the others don't see Cloud for his title or for who he claims to be (except Aerith because of Zack) and I'm sure they don't even realize how different this Cloud is compared to his real self. They just accept him for how they know him and see that he's a good guy. They don't try to change him or have any strange expectation about him (again, except for Aerith), he's an integral part of the group for them and that's how you know they love him in their own way. Obviously one wouldn't be able to handle what's happening to Cloud as much as Tifa, both because of her knowledge and because of her special bond with Cloud. I can see why she'd be the one by his side always, but it's mostly because they don't know any better and the fact they're sticking for him this far even when he started to act really weird, shows how much they love him. I think there's a big difference between Tifa being the "only one who loves Cloud for who he is" and "everyone loves and respecs him for who he is now, but only Tifa knows who Cloud really is since the beginning". Because let's not forget, Cloud's persona goes beyond Zack and Soldier. It's still an important part/version of him, his ideal self and part of the reason why Cloud ends up accepting his real self at the end. Without his persona, he wouldn't have been able to go through this journey the way he's doing now in the first place. So even when the guys are gonna discover who he really is, they're not gonna treat him any different, because they've always seen the good in him despite all. If anything they're gonna love him even more because of how much he's gonna be able to open up at the end. As I've always said, every single one of the characters in our party, has a characteristic that connects them to Cloud. Cloud finally being himself is gonna resonate with Red who has hidden his innocence from the party in the hopes they would treat him like one of them, Cloud's motion sickness is gonna make Yuffie resonate more with him and I believe they're gonna end up helping each other through it. Cid and Barret are gonna appreciate Cloud's heart, Cid in regards of Cloud following his dreams through his determination and Barret through how much Cloud has suffered because of Shinra and despite all continues fighting for his loved ones, probably making him think about how Cloud wanting to protect Tifa, is very close to him wanting to protect Marlene. And finally Vincent will see Cloud as someone who has suffered a lot by the hands of Hojo, as someone who has overcome a lot and he will be happy about how Cloud could let go of the demons of his past, since he also went through a lot because of Shinra and instead lived through years of self loathing, the way Cloud has also been doing for basically his entire life. I believe the pay off will be great between Cloud and Tifa, but I'm also looking forward to Cloud finally feeling loved by so many of these people who became special to him throughout his journey.

Just loved everything about your video, from the cosplays, to the editing and storytelling. The song at the end was the Cherry on Top!! 😂 For me Cloud and Tifa made always more sense and I just really hope in the last game they don’t miss the opportunity, to give their beautiful established love story finally a very clear and satisfying happy ending!!! They deserve it! Well take this for what you will. But the Gongaga scene was basically the devs saying what's going to happen at the very least during the lifestream scene. In Gongaga she learns about what Cloud did for her at the bridge the day her mom died. He even failed there. But the point is what matters to her. He then opens up a tiny bit about his fucked up head and fears. This almost leads to a kiss until it's interrupted. So you can imagine that the lifestream scene. Where she learns what he did for her much later. In a much more important moment. After the promise. And what price it took from him. And then find out about his bottled feelings and his motivations of being a solider. Well lets just say if her reaction in Gongaga was attempting a kiss in the heat of the moment.. It's the devs basically telling you. Also this time there won't be anyone to interrupt her. This will be unskipable as the original I bet. Everything after that is in flux. Hopefully they just keep the same character interactions going but this time they are truly opened up to eachother. And then that concludes with the Highwind and maybe a scene after it's all over. But you at the very least can guarantee yourself what will happen at the lifestream. Also they already did a kiss at the GS so you can also infer that it won't be a carbon copy of how that one happens. If you know you know lol. I do hope so aswell. I think the story is much better for it. Only fucking game where I tolerate romance and find it important 😂

If were talking about OG Aerith yeah she just kinda exists with a few good moments then dies As for the remake Aerith eh Id argue she brings him out more at least before part 3 drops and finally focuses on Tifa. Ironically the song Hollow talks about Cloud feels whole around Aerith which he does indeed show in the remake way better than the OG, its all themed around how he wont be able to handle his loss of something like that. Tifa will fill that void for sure but not until after the lifestream sequence because despite the good moments they share she still cant fully let her guard down because of conflicting memories between the two and it doesnt help she does lie to him a few times even if shes not trying to be hurtful. Sure its also Clouds fault for also not putting his guard down and not communicating to her pre lifestream memory sequence but overall it shows both sides dont exactly let each other fully be constructive and in part slightly less genuine. Just seems quite dumb to me to write off Aerith even if she isnt his pairing in the end but if you were only talking about the original Id kinda agree, they really did a huge glow up on how much shes helping Cloud slowly show his softer side. Both do in different ways but imo Tifa only gets as nice as Aerith until both Cloud and Tifa finally drop their guard and embrace each others support.

@@gatorssbm Her impact on the story, and Cloud, are both greater after her death. Unfortunately for Cloud, the main thing Aerith brings is more trauma into his life, in the short term at least. Anything positive she did to bring Cloud out of his shell is undone when she dies. Cloud ends up worse off after than he was before. It's the proverbial last straw for his mind after losing so many he cares about and Sephiroth takes him over completely for a time. It really wasn't until Advent Children that she actually had any kind of net positive effect on Cloud imo. Her and Zack do eventually teach him the lesson of accepting and forgiving himself for their deaths. To let go of the guilt and live his own life. That's all based on the original story. Obviously, we are only just at this point in the story with the remakes. In the remakes, I do agree that she was helping bring him out of his shell. But nothing she, or Tifa, or anyone else did is going to keep Cloud from hitting rock bottom anyway. It's ultimately the deep connection and shared memories he and Tifa have that makes it possible for her to help him. In the remakes, he opens up to Tifa more than anyone and he obviously loves her, but even she can't keep him from getting to that point. This is also all without even mentioning Aerith's biggest role. She basically becomes a deity when she dies and saves the Planet. Then later helps save it again when she cures everyone of geostygma. Yes, I answered your wall of text with a wall of text :). Have a good one, friend.

Aerith is a pretty bad friend to Tifa, when you think about some of the things she does: trying to steal Cloud, making her jealous when Tifa does no such thing to her (and is in fact always considerate of Aerith), and making cloud seem unfaithful- Aerith must know what they feel towards each other- she is the smartest out of them after all. I do like Aerith, but she becomes a much better character where she has less to do with Cloud romantically, and more to do with the story (or as a friend who opens his eyes to what Tifa means to him). Her purpose is the macguffin, not the love interest. Tifa's relationship with Cloud is complicated for sure, but this is not a critique, it's the point. Edit: Tifa sees Cloud's essence. Aerith doesn't. This should be the only argument needed, when it comes to storytelling. Tifa knows who Cloud is, even more than himself.

It was a great analysis and I agree with most of it. I think this kind of couple is the most ideal relationship in the story. Cloud has a goal but doesn't know how to get there Tifa, on the other hand, knows how to move forward, but has no specific goals. They make up for each other's shortcomings and realize what they truly need to do. At the same time, they learn what kind of person they are to each other and how important they are to each other. And there's Sephiroth Sephiroth also believes that Cloud is important to him. He plans to make Cloud his puppet through endless despair and pain. But Tifa stops it Sephiroth is someone whom Sephiroth must keep a close eye on because she is the only one who creates Cloud's independence and lifts him up from his suffering.

I think it's extremely one sided on Aerith's part and even quite uncomfortable how she approaches him because she keeps pretending he's Zack, even asking him to do the same things her boyfriend did in the past while they spend time together (the Aerith dream at the end of Rebirth). Even Cloud points it out various times during the game, tells her to stop calling them hanging out as "dates" and mentions how strange she's been acting at the end, before she told him to indulge her. From Cloud is simple friendship, he never shows anything beyond that and he even calles her a friend at the end, but people misunderstand the situation because they look at Aerith insistence and think they can project her feelings onto him. Feelings that don't even come from a certain stance, because she keeps comparing Cloud with Zack and still doesn't know who real Cloud is.

I don't get how anyone would consider Aerith treating Cloud like Zack as "cute", when Cloud gets harassed by everyone he meets already (not those in the party), plus Aerith who can't give him a break. This was an incredible analysis of not only Cloud and Tifa, but their relationship and dynamic as well. Every character plays a role in supporting Cloud, but it’s Tifa that plays the most important one. You have to imagine what she’s going through too. She miraculously reunites with Cloud, only to find out he’s a shell of his former self, yet she can’t fix him, because she doesn’t know how. The attempts to do so fail, and her diffidence and own flaws aggravate the situation. So, she’s working through her own issues while also trying to balance helping Cloud, but then there’s this underlying fear of losing him again; which is also why she’s always the first to try and rectify his flare ups, regardless if things are tense between them or not. It really shows her mental fortitude and the love she has for him. While Tifa is a very compassionate person, there’s no way she would go to the lengths she does for Cloud if the foundation of their relationship wasn’t already concrete. It really shows just how much they affect each other, good and bad. And as a bonus side note, imagine if she never ran into him in the sector 7 slums? Cloud would’ve remained in a catatonic state and turned into one of the robed men. He only snaps out of it upon meeting her. Multiple times, Tifa’s the only reason why Cloud doesn’t succumb to Jenova.

They think the ending where Cloud and Aerith bid farewell is somehow peak romance. We’re not denying Aerith is important to Cloud, but Cloud’s feelings are for Tifa, and Aerith’s are rather complicated. She admits she doesn’t know what type of like she feels for Cloud and says goodbye cause of her fate and she wanted closure at the least.

It is odd even in the ending of rebirth (the scene where they where on a “date” in some sort of flashback alternate reality with aerith and cloud alone) she admits to her feelings saying she “like likes” him and when it wasn’t reciprocated she said “at least I know where things stand” that’s clear that he doesn’t feel romantically attached to her. He has feelings where he’s very protective and deeply cares for her but he doesn’t love her

Phenomenal breakdown! I love all those small intimate moments of them comforting each other. The talk in Gongaga is one of my favorite scenes in the game, it's such a powerful and important exchange.

Cloud was/is in love with Tifa. This was shown in the original game when tifa was drifting in clouds/life stream memories. Cloud was not thinking of Aerith during this point. The only reason he appears to show interest is because his memories up until the life stream were of Zack Fair, who was in love with Aerith. This is why Aerith begins to like cloud because essentially cloud was Zack. Tifas character is his childhood friend/ love interest.

@@MrLightlike78who really knows they’ve shown people getting shot in the head and skewer by cloud with blood coming out. In remake they alluded to sexual content multiple times throughout wall market so it’s not impossible for them to do it. I think at the very least they will have a passionate moment which leads to them kissing again. Honestly that’s all that’s really needed to end this ridiculous love triangle. Rebirth has really shed light on who the main love interest is so part 3 should bring it to a close.
