I find that cohorts and classmates do not have time to connect with you, or have study sessions. However, I got a job from a cohort type person that I reconnected on linkedin. We were not even friends just did same activities and ran in the same circles, I would not have had a job with out her. You never know where the help will come from, but if people are familiar with you they may be willing to help you later just because you are in the same cohort or travel in the same circles. One time we had a 5 person stats study group that we ran every week, but I was unable to get that magic to happen again.
