Where in FL? I'm new to Bonsai. Learning in bits and pieces, lol. So, you don't put any soil and at all? Not even on the very top? Is Akadama the one thing I always see people poking the surface with a stick? Does it work also as the soil, or is that an additive to it? Is the poking in diferent spots on the surface of the trees that always gets me thinking. I welcome any begginer tips! Thank you!

Hello! Thank you so much for this informative video. I have a couple of important questions that I would appreciate an answer to. So I will be growing bonsai's from seed and so I bought this and one other soil mix from amazon. I am planning to start them in the bonsai soil mix, however, after you said that black soil doesnt have good drainage, I am slightly confused as to what I should do. The bottom of my pot has 4 holes for drainage and is decently sized. Should I grow them in the black soil and then about 2-3 weeks after they germinate, move them into this mix? I hope you get back to me. Thank you
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply Жыл бұрын
I would germinate the seeds in the bonsai soil. Black potting soil and container growing are two things that don’t go together. Growing your seeds and or seedlings in bonsai soil requires more misting of the soil to keep the seeds slightly moist. I hope this helps

i live in a very hot part of arizona, typically 100+ multiple days in a row, should i add a little bit of soil to this to help retain some moisture?
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jack, I like the way you think, but adding black soil can clog up the lava rock pours which will keep too much water in the pot and around the roots. Instead, place your trees in a shallow dish of water during the summer month, it will help keep the moisture longer in the soil. still water the soil daily. If you are growing trees that get yellow leaves due to the heat, I would move the trees into shade for those hot summer month.

Very nice Channel thank you. I live in Réunion island here it's very hot too and humid in some place not where I am, I've red mites in some plants... Thanks a lot for the answer. I asked this because I am inquiring for my soil mix (pumice, pine bark, zeolite, earthworm humus). Jarome, Using this particular soil would you say you would use a lot more water? This would mean you will really have to pay attention to watering pretty often otherwise the tree can possibly die due to lack of watering. Do you have a bosai soil that will retain water a little longer for less watering and keeping the tree hydrated during the hot days of summer? I mean for people that don't have the time or money to water on the daily.
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply4 жыл бұрын
Hey Johnny, yes you do have to water more especially during the summer time. This soil will make a great difference for your trees as trees prefer to dry out a little bit before the next watering. Depending on your climate and specie as well as time of year you may get away with waiting more than one day in between watering. In Florida, we water every day except for Adenium and jades.

lIs black soil better for some people who forget/cant water their plants everyday? Looks like you got a big nursery with lots of people helping out water your plants...my question is if you went on vacation, and your plants didn't get watered for 5-7 days, or even more, would all of your plants die? Whereas if they were in black soil, while it doesnt dry out as much, it wouldnt need the constant watering. Maybe a mix of some black soil into the bonsai soil?
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply4 жыл бұрын
Hey Chapman, Great question! If you don't remember or can't water your trees every day I recommend you get a small drip system. It is super cheap and very easy to install. It took us 1 morning to install our drip system and we have over 1000 trees. If you go away for a number of days, you can set your plants into a tray with water, which is what we do when the hurricane comes because most likely power will be out. we have our trees sitting in water for up to two weeks and they are perfectly fine. You are right, in potting soil your plants don't need constant watering but they will also not grow happy and healthy. Plants like to dry out between watering and don't like to be water logged. You could absolutely mix a handful of black soil into our bonsai soil and you could shave off a few days. Keep in mind that our soil was created specifically for container grown plants and is ready to use.

So if i use your soil on my jade succulents and the soil dries out in 24 hrs, does that mean i have to water my plant again or does that mean i water more often? So my watering schedule for my jade plants would be every 3-4 days or weekly for it to stay healthy.

Hey Frank, thank you for your kind words. We actually wash, dry and sift prior to bagging. the fine dust that you see is because our soil is packaged bone dry so the fine dust is from storage, or shipping and handling. You don't have to sift it again once you receive our soil, simply pot your trees and water them until water runs clear from the drainage holes.

Appreciate the video, as a supply business, it was gracious of you to divulge that information. Curious, what do you think about kitty litter or (diatomaceous earth) ? I've seen some guys use it in their mix
@joemerino32434 жыл бұрын
what kind of kitty litter was that? Regular kitty litter is usually made of clay. It tends to become sludge when wet, doesn't seem good for plant roots.

Hey Don, Thank you for your order! Yes, as long as it is in a container you can absolutely use our soil. We use our soil for all potted plants.

Pine bark is usually sold in such a large size that is too big for bonsai mix. Trying to find a brand that I can get most of out the bag is a challenge.

Hey Ash, Our Pine Bark is aged and is a great aggregate. Please send us an email at Info@thebonsaisupply.com and we can send you a larger bag of pine bark.

I often see composed bark in stores. You can just chop it down to size with a cleaver.

In my area you can buy bags labeled "soil conditioner." It's nothing more than finely ground, aged pine bark. Read the package to be sure.

Bonsai mix gets so dry in a day and my ficus bonsai has been watering every 2 days and start loosing brown dry leaves 🤔😪 How I can save it?
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply2 жыл бұрын
Hi Vera, you can water your tree every day if it is outdoors in full sun. You can safe it by watering every morning around the same time, keep it in full sun, and misting the leaves. Bonsai trees should be watered every day if the soil is on the drier side of course.

Orchids? I mean, I've contemplated trying it but the particle size is rather small comparative to what epiphytic orchids are grown in. I considered trying it with a slipper orchid (Paphiopedilum or Pharagmipedium) but I don't have one lying around that could be a sacrificial lamb.

Hey Michael, we have a few Orchids growing in our soil mixture at the store and they do great. I am convinced that our soil works really well for all container-grown plants.

I understand. But for the soil to dry out so quickly in a drier climate say California, it seems like a waste of water if the soil doesn’t t hold on to more of the water you just placed in the soil.

I don’t understand your question, can you rephrase it?
@Josef_R3 жыл бұрын
Why would you want your soil arid in one day? Even in a desert environment, there is water deep in the soil available to the plants. This makes no sense to me at all. Especially for non-succulents. There is nothing wrong with having enough organic matter to keep the soil moist for a few days.
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jose, good question! Trees in the ground vs. trees in pots are a completely different game. You want your bonsai soil to almost dry out in between watering to prevent the roots from getting rot and throwing the water and oxygen exchange off balance. In the ground, the roots can spread and loosen up the soil, whereas, in a pot, black soil will compact to the point of root suffocation; also, not enough air gets to the roots.
@Josef_R3 жыл бұрын
@@WeareTheBonsaiSupply So for a plant that can go a WEEK before it needs watering, you would want your soil to almost dry out in a week. Yet you have it drying out in a day. Your explanation does not make sense. Because of your overly dry soil, you are now watering your plant daily instead of weekly, like it needs.
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply3 жыл бұрын
@@Josef_R Only Jades and desert roses and other species alike need water once a week because Desert Roses store the water in the trunk and jades store the water in the leaves. All other species, deciduous, evergeen and conifers need to be watered on a daily basis when the soil is just about to dry out. The good thing about the soil is that during the rainy season where it rains on a daily basis the soil drains all the access water and just retains what it needs, therefore you can't over water your trees with this soil.
@Josef_R3 жыл бұрын
@@WeareTheBonsaiSupply I'm aware of what plants can go that long without water, I'm referring to succulents because you do a lot of videos on Portulacaria. But you don't differentiate when you are telling people to buy your product and then you have them slavishly watering a succulent on a daily basis for no reason. But I live in Louisiana (2 states away) and in the summer it doesn't rain a lot and gets to 100 degrees. If I used your mix for any plants, I would be watering 5X a day. Besides the fact that any fertilizer you add goes straight out the bottom and is never absorbed by the plant.
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply3 жыл бұрын
@@Josef_R I live in Florida which is a fairly similar climate to your and we only water once a day and succulents once a week. We don’t tell people to lavishly water their trees we always mention it might differ slightly per climate. This is why we add pine bark fines because it absorbs the fertilizer and releases it back to the plant as needed. No Ferilizer gets waisted.
