The cue i was taught: think about yourself like a corkscrew thats turning into the ground. The weight doesnt go forward, it shifts laterally. So for a cross, the weight shifts from the right hip to the left hip, and *down* onto the left hip. On top of not being out of position, you get a few more benefits. First is built in head movement. Your head will follow your shoulders, and your shoulders follow the hips left and down. It also helps get a little extra power into the shot; think of a trebuchet (not to mention youll be better connected to the ground when the punch lands and less power will be lost).
@musabawad72305 ай бұрын
Yup. Imagine you’re opponent slips you’re cross and throws a right straight themself. You’ll be taking a full right straight unguarded + the momentum of you’re cross. It’ll be a potential 2x multiplier

I wonder if we all couldn't do with seeing more mature adults with people skills interacting like...*well, mature adults with people skills* even if it's unlikely to balance the absolutely bananas amount of poor behavior from... well, nearly everyone who gets the most attention: the wealthiest and most powerful-- down to the most basic common folks... That's kind of why we teach to sit on your punches. It's mostly because it's easier to throw all your weight behind a punch if you're sitting than if you're standing straight up, and it increases your range. Otherwise you might reach for your punches which will throw you off balance and make it hard to throw another punch, or defend against a counter punch. So basically you don't want to reach for your punches. You can see the difference by getting in your stance, putting your fist up against a wall and push standing as far from the wall as possible. Then do it again while bending your knees. You arm should bend a litttle because your reach is longer while you're sitting then when you where standing straight up.
@olliefoxx71656 ай бұрын
Ok. But what does "sit down" mean? When do you sit down? Do you mean keep correct posture? Dont "stand on" your front leg? What does the phrase have to do with the mechanics?

Shadow boxing and light sparring should teach you this. If ur stance or combos doesn't feel good without a target then ur already doing it wrong. You can smash a bag but its better to focus on technique, distance control/timing and ur defence.
@uvsa28335 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Problem is when you only ever spar hard and never learn to move properly because everything you do is coming from your strength alone. But congrats! You hurt your sparring partners a lot and you get hurt a lot yourself.
@101Bettis4 ай бұрын
Yo!! I figured this out on my own just dicking around on the heavy bag a while back. I was trying to generate as much power as I could, and I "sat down on it" and was amazed at how much force I transferred into the bag doing that. It felt AMAZING. ...Plus I didn't fall over forwards, and just like you said, I was in perfect balance at the beginning of the strike before my hand connected. I could have slipped, initiated some head movement, thrown another punch, anything. It felt like slow motion, like I could see my strike about to connect, and then make a mental decision to follow up. Much better than falling over LOL.

100% correct my coach told me leave about 60% of your weight on the back foot and 40 on the front and why wouldn’t you, its where the power shots are so if your struggling with reach make sure that shoulder turns all the way back to add a inch or two on reach n step in if needed

Shifting your weight into your front leg is how you "put your weight into' you punches. Less effort for more effect While what you said is better for fighting in general, weight into your lead leg is better for simple boxing
@Lynwood_Jackson5 ай бұрын
You don't punch with your hands, you punch with your feet. Your body is a potential energy factory, so if you're rotating from your foot to your knee to your hips to your shoulders to your elbow to your hand then your getting a lot more power than if you only threw it from your elbow or your shoulder.

@ericdeulen55316 ай бұрын
It's talking about correct foot and body Posture, as well as probably using your hips and shoulder rotation to creat the force behind a punch. When I use the heavy bag, also I notice a lot of force when I step forward as I jab ( especially with my left leg/ left jab, off hand), but if I shift my weight right, I actually can throw a pretty forceful blow. And move at the same time.
