1972 was bodybuilding's first controversial Mr. Olympia. Do you think Sergio got robbed or did Arnold deserve the title?
@Игорь-р6л3ы6 күн бұрын
Sergio had way better upper-lower body balance, probably due to his weightlifting roots (eventhough Arnold started there as well 😂, but didn't proceed to Olympics level) but Weiders were looking for a poster boy for the broader masses... Turned out to be the right choice in the end.... As for the win, it wasn't a robbery by any means, but Sergio had the better body... Maybe didn't present it as good as he should have

Arnold is a bodybuilding Tom Brady
@Gargarks6 күн бұрын
Both. I think on a matter of physique both had their strengths, but were equal in the sight of the judges who were having a hard time deciding. Arnold's trickery arguably gave him the win, but it's impossible to say he wouldn't have won anyway. Arnold hanging around for a last couple of poses was all it took to convince the judges, then Sergio never had it to begin with.

I knew Sergio for many years... he was a cop and I was a paramedic in Chicago... Oliva was a real man doing real work protecting Chicago citizens against dirtbags for his whole career. Most of the other 'pro's' were gym bums, mirror athletes, whose only activity was shaving their pecs. Sergio was always in shape, never dieted hence his 'smoothness'. Basically Weider screwed him, only letting him guest pose after he traveled to Europe to compete against Arnold... because Oliva competed in a 'competitor's' contest. Joe and Ben Weirdo were great at screwing their guys, yet retired with hundreds of millions of dollars while paying the bb's peanuts. Also they never supported any charities, only themselves.

I know Arnold and the Weiders did a lot for bodybuilding, but Arnold should have won maybe half the Mr. Olympia's that he won. There were many better than Arnold. To name just a few Zane, Nubret and Oliva were all better consistently. I guess that's the risk you take when you are involved in judged sports.

In the 1968 IFBB Mr. Universe show Arnold was FAT and CALF LESS, so he lost to Frank Zane with Sergio presenting the Awards to Zane. You are correct about other physiques being better than Arnold like Robby Robinson, Mike Mentzer, Boyer Coe, Scott Wilson, Sergio Oliva, Serge Nubret, Bill Pearl (who Arnold chickened out against in the 1971 NABBA Universe), Casey Viator (who Arnold refused to be photographed next to at the Nautilus Center) and others. Arnold was never the best physique, only the Weider's best Marketing Tool. After 1970, Arnold could no longer enter Non-IFBB shows in order for the Weider's to protect their Arnold investment from losing to outside IFBB judging. It's just business.

It's bittersweet. Unparalleled genetics not being exposed to Arnold's level. Yes, it would've been amazing seeing Sergio in Predator and/or Pumping Iron - now knowing that he refused the cast for both seems incomplete. But Sergio is above Hollywood and its recognitions. Sometimes hard work and ineffable talent/genetics is its own reward - that's what Sergio is to me.
