i appreciate the zac farro praise (it's well-deserved) but the structure of this video makes for a confusing and disingenuous timeline. zac was paramore's only drummer from 2004-2010 before he and his brother, josh, left the band for personal reasons (nothing to do with zac's capabilities or the band's genre). the next six years of his absence were filled by all the touring drummers who left for various reasons (again, none of them having to do with skill), until zac returned in 2017 and, like you said, adapted well to the new styles. this could've been much more straight-foward.

Over his political views, like who gives a shit? If I were in a band and my drummer was a neo-nazi I couldn't care less as long as he did his job. Also, Hayley Williams making what she does in comparison to the rest of the band is kind of bullshit. I get that she is the face of the band she has the easiest job, at least divvy the income up more equally.

As a Drummer I hope you caught the MISTAKE he states in this video at around 14:03 of the video. He says Zac plays in 4/4 time but the song is in 3/4 and then GUSHES PRAISE on him for the difficulty level involved. He is correct on the difficulty of playing Polyrhythms but he's wrong on his facts! The Chorus of the song is in 4/4 and Zac plays 4/4. During the Verses the song is in 3/4 and Zac PLAYS IN 3/4! At NO POINT does he play a "Polyrhythm" but rather he switches Time Signatures as the Band switches Time Signatures. I certainly wouldn't want this Guy playing Drums in my Band when he can't count properly! Especially if I was playing Bass, instead of Guitar, because when I play Bass I like to "lock in" with the Kick Drum to build a solid Groove for my Band to play over and if you can't tell the difference between 3/4 and 4/4, as the "Timekeeper" of the Band, you're going to DESTROY any chance of us sounding TIGHT! Can you imagine trying to play Frame by Frame from King Crimson with this guy?!? One Guitar is playing in 13/8 while the other is in 7/8.....It is SO HARD to play and you need a Rock Steady Drummer to keep it all together because you can't listen to the other Guitarist, to try and stay "in Time" since you are in wildly different Times. You need your Drummer to hold it all together. In fact it is so hard we practiced it for almost a Year but we could never get it tight enough to play it live!

Hitting drums as hard as you can for hours upon hours is something that will eventually ruin every drummer. Your body isn't designed to constantly absorb the shock of drumming hard... joints wear out and ligaments also loosen and tear. Playing drums comfortably and loosely makes for a better drumming experience and will end in a drummer having a longer drumming life. Look at Phil Collins... dude can barely play drums anymore after years of hard hitting and constant repeated motion injuries. It may look great to see a drummer pounding away and flailing arms and head, but your neck and shoulders WILL eventually tire, tear and eventually cause you to start playing smarter OR stop playing at all. EDIT: Apparently there are a ton of people here that think that just because you have repetitive motion injuries it renders you useless. That's not what I'm saying and I thought our community would be smarter than that. All I'm saying is EVERY drummer has something that they need to treat due to playing the drums for decades. Think of ANY sport (yes drums are just as athletic) and you will find that the athletes are on some sort of pain medication or constant physical therapy for their injuries. Drums (depending on what style) CAN give you long term issues. I have neck issues from playing for 4 decades, it doesn't mean I'm sitting in a wheelchair staring at the TV with a blank look on my face. Lets use our heads for 3 seconds.

Exactly. Drummers are athletes and at some point the body is going to breakdown. You also need time for your muscles to heal (hence why a pitcher in baseball doesn't come back immediately from a serious ligament injury), and it seems like Zack just didn't get the proper breaks he needed in order for that to happen. And the idea of calling the job of being Paramore's drummer a "curse" is insanely overblown.

This is very true. I find it very interesting how alot of drummers in very fast and intense genres such as deathcore or tech death focus alot on movement efficiency and even how to optimize blood flow to the arms. A good example is Spencer Prewett from Archspire who in many songs alternates groups of 4 on his snare and cymbals during blastbeats between hands to have one arm below his heart to optimize blood flow and get oxygen to the muscles.

Zack is my biggest inspiration. I’m lucky enough to of seen him twice with Paramore and I still don’t know how he plays how he does. The feel, heavy hitting and perfect parts will always make me wonder how I still can’t play to his standard when I’m 20 and he was 16-17 when Riot came out. The man is a literal beast behind the kit. I think there is some deliberate omission. The author made it sound as if Zac was so incredibly young and... I looked at the wiki and he was apparantly 6 months younger then Taylor and 1,5 years younger then Hayley. It's not really that huge age difference to how you make it sound. Yes, he was the youngest, but not to the point of ignoring that the rest of band wasn't exactly old either.

I think the reason these songs end up taking a toll on the drummers is not because of the songs itself, but because of the way these drummers play. I mean, I've played complicated and fast songs for hours, and I really don't get tired or hurt. HOWEVER, if I started throwing my hands in the air and hitting the drums as hard as I can, of course I'm gonna be tired. That's why I always tell people, just because you play hard doesn't make you play better. If you want the mix to sound juicy, get a good mixing engineer. Playing hard often just worsens things. Anyways, great video!

I feel sorry for Zac, the label should’ve had a dietician, a physio, and a personal trainer working with him early on to help build his strength and stamina up. A university carried out a study on rock drummers and found out they can actually burn more calories than a pro footballer (soccer) player during a set.

I'm no drummer. I played on a band with friends and I wanted to play bass. But the guy who was supposed to play the drums couldn't get the timing right for this song we wanted to playI did, so we switched and he played bass while I played drums. We played on a band competition at school, and the song we played was this punk song with a very basic drum line, but I was doing 8s on the snare. After every practice, I struggle to even wipe the sweat on my forehead with my right hand. I had to lower my forehead to my hand to do so. I'm the most physically built member on that band. I grew up helping the family business since I was 8. I've been doing a lot of heavy lifting since my early teens. Knowing what I know now, I'd prefer lifting 150lbs (75lbs on each hand) up a very steep path than playing drums with very fast beats consistently. In all my years doing delivery, I never felt my forearm go numb like that.

It’s interesting to see how references influence how you look at an artist: there are many drummers out there in the metal genre for example that would be able to fill this role comfortably and much more (listen to the guys from Leprous or Polyphia). I believe it was much more a matter of personality and how it fits with the rest of the band than unique talent. Same as Lars in Metallica for example ;)

We talked, I read her writings… etc. Then she invited me to a paramore concert. But we never made it. But bonded more over that and …made lots sof love and she came to see my concerts and even collaborated with dancing while I played. Then we broke up in 11th grade and …so it goes, I hope she’s doing well. We talked for few years after amicably . Since then, too many things have happened to count

I think this speaks to something greater than skill itself … love and friendship. Those other drummers are more than capable to fill Zac’s role as they are hard-hitting drummers capable of grooves and polyrhythmic concepts. However, I’m betting they could never fill the void of Zac because of the love between band mates. It’s the camaraderie that supersedes all. My guess is the other drummers felt that. They were more than capable but always felt like “the outsider.” Nothing wrong with that. In fact, that’s a good thing and why certain bands can attain such longevity.

Haven't finished the video yet, so I'm not sure if he mentions this or not, but I feel the wording is slightly misleading. I feel its wrong to say that they've had 7 drummers because Zac was the only full-time drummer in the band. The other 6 drummers were touring drummers, and it's not uncommon for bands to rotate touring drummers due to scheduling conflicts, bands wanting different vibes for different tours, amongst other things. Just to clarify for the others watching that didn't know
