I appreciate your channel. I enjoy your videos. This one, though, I don't know. I'm a retired paramedic with almost 20 years experience in EMS and the fire service. I was also a Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support Instructor. I've also experienced a miter saw kickback, because I was stupidly holding way too small of a piece with my hand. It's been a few years. I still thank God that He let me keep all 10 fingers, and I can still play drums. I came very close to needing to study Rick Allen's technique very closely. I can't afford all those electronic pedals on my pension, though. Seriously, though. What I kept seeing while watching this video was job security for my colleagues. That miter saw motor is a lot stronger than your fingers, that tape, and that ¼" dowel put together. If some grain catches on that blade wrong, or one side lifts up, that work piece is going to fly away from you, and pull your hand toward the blade. Maybe you'll stop in time, like I did. On the other hand, you'll have a good chance of meeting a few of my brothers and sisters in fire and EMS. Oh, yeah. That work piece is going to bounce hard, probably right back at you, and you'll likely only have one usable hand to treat both wounds. Maybe if you built a jig to securely clamp the jig table to the saw table, and fully enclosed the workpiece, so it is also secured to the saw. Might have to pre-round the outside edge. It still seems like there are just too many things that could go wrong with a miter saw. Here's a good rule of thumb for shop safety: Never do anything you don't want to have to quickly explain to the 911 dispatcher before you lose consciousness from all the blood loss. Either way, I'll keep watching. You produce interesting content. Thank you for that.

If you screw down some bits of wood around the edges of the blank you can make it safer.

Now trim the corners off and use that same dowel to attach a circle jig to your router to make the outside round.

When I make these I clip the corners at 45 deg on my miter saw and then bevel the sides at about 15 deg on my table saw afterwards. This just males the board lighter. I’ve also rounded the bowels using the table saw circle cutting method.

I do like it...not the amount of dust though, maybe this could be an outdoors project. I would simply leave the dowel in the bottom, trimmed flush...the tape is too risky for me. It's one method to make a bowl that you have explained very well!
@Mike1962nzАй бұрын
Could use a drop of hot melt glue on each corner. I think this would hold better than double sided tape.
@ninomaiorano6697Ай бұрын
Use carpet tape. It's a lot of stronger than sticky back tape.😀

On the secondary base draw a line from corner to corner creating an X then use those lines to locate center for the bowl wood.

My husband has made almost 200 of these on a table saw. He sands his out with a dremel with a right angle attachment with sanding discs

Glue the bowl wood to the base wood with a piece of paper between them, this will allow easy splitting without damaging the project.

Use a smaller size blade on the saw and you can cut more deeply on the same size blank. also, if you add a coat of paste wax to the top of the bottom board and the bottom of the board that swivels, you reduce the drag on turning the board. Next, you could inlay a contrasting wood in the saw kerfs to create a pattern. That's all for now. Good video and basic idea, thanks.

Can use a similar jig on table saw to make them round

Prefer the dial and drill hole method for safety reasons. Just take some of the sawdust you just made, fill the hole with wood glue and fill with sawdust. Sand lightly and you’ll never see it.

How long did it take to make the first, thicker example? Thanks for the vid!
@SpecificLove7Ай бұрын
Not counting building the jig or sanding, less than 5 min

@@SpecificLove7 Oh. Well then... Might have to make a few of these. It looks like they'd take a lot longer. Thanks for your reply and again for the vid.

You need to buy better tape...

What vrand is your double sided tape? How good is your clear double sided tape as sticking, preventing lift & sheer? Also is it easy to clean remove & clean any residue? (Im after a good double sided 5wpe for my cnc projects)
@SpecificLove7Ай бұрын
It sticks very well and can be a challenge to remove. I've never tried it for CNC but it might work. Unfortunately it was given to me a few years ago and I don't know where to buy it. I do think it was made by 3M. I hope that helps.
@JohnColgan.Ай бұрын
@SpecificLove7 thanks for quick response. I've had some that hold well, but the tape is nigh on impossible to remove from both faces, it tears into thousands of shreds. Currently using carpet tape. Good hold, but sheers when warm from CNC spindle heat... Keep trying different samples
@CountDoucheulaАй бұрын
If you're in the UK, Scotch makes an excellent 2" wide double-sided tape. I use it for everything. CNC, router jigs, sticking birthday cards together, tonnes of different workholding applications. You'll want to pay attention to grain orientation when removing the workpiece though, I've definitely snapped a couple of chunks of mahogany trying to remove them too forcefully. And it peels off really clean, you don't have to pick at it, you can get one nice strip and there's pretty much no residue left over. I really fkn like this tape 😂
@TonyCandido-z1cАй бұрын
If you don’t cut too deep. Why not just plug the hole with glue and a dowel or some scrap from the wood you’re using?
@nooneofconsequence3847Ай бұрын
You have that drill guide, why not make a peg board like base and use dowels to lock the board in place? I definitely want to try this now
@SpecificLove7Ай бұрын
If I'm understanding you correctly, I'm not sure it would work well by locking it in place because you constantly have to turn it.
@nooneofconsequence3847Ай бұрын
@SpecificLove7 the pegs would be on the corners on the base board locking the bowl board in place, keeping it from spinning
