I do have to give some notes about DTR: Its not that Chip didn't trust him, its that DTR only had one full season playing QB at the HS level; prior to his senior season he split time at WR and RB. So its a matter of Chip knowing that DTR was incredibly raw as a passer and needed extended development, thus bringing in Speights to give DTR that time.
@Blue_Phoenix242 жыл бұрын
Another thing you failed to mention about Chip's arrival is that he had to essentially rebuild the team from the ground up as he lost most of the Mora-era roster left thru graduation or transferring during the first calendar year, so truth be told their wasn't much expectations for the first season or two.
@alonsocasillas86422 жыл бұрын
As a lifelong UCLA fan, I feel for Rick Neuheisel. He wanted to pay his top assistants and the AD at the time didn’t spend as much as they would now on team personnel. I strongly feel that Jim Mora had success right away due to all the players that Neuheisel recruited and brought it (Hundley, Barr, Kendricks). Mora benefited from his players and after a few years he brought in high ranked classes but couldn’t develop them. Mora is a defensive guy and at the end of his tenure they had highly ranked prospects who didn’t know how to tackle. So as much as Mora wom early on I think there was more to it than most people saw.
@josephgallo32412 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? Mora converted Barr from a running back to a defensive player, so you remark that Mora could not develop players is bullshit! Mora was the one who recruited DTR and injuries was the reason why the last 2 seasons were losing ones. He lost Josh Rosen for the season in 2016 and lost a lot of players in the defensive side in 2017!

Victory vs. Washington was great but they let their foot off the gas and UW almost came back to force the game into OT. Can’t let that happen again. Love DTR - exciting and highly athletic QB who can do it all. I’m going to miss him after this season. Hope he gets drafted and has a successful career in the NFL. People overlook that Kelly gutted the entire roster he inherited from the Jim Mora era. While the second half of Mora’s era was poor, he still had fairly good recruiting classes. The problem was that his recruiting classes weren’t well balanced and the program struggled immensely in certain critical areas of the game. For instance, the offensive line was absolutely atrocious. It was so bad that it was putting Josh Rosen’s health at serious risk. When Kelly came in the perception was that he would build upon the talent from Mora and fix the problem areas. Kelly took a completely different approach however. He didn’t like the players from Mora’s teams and he decided to completely rebuild the program from the ground up in his own image. Any team that had as much turnover as UCLA did in Kelly’s first couple seasons would have been as bad or worse. His first two seasons were built entirely with underclassman. There was slight improvement in the second year but it really wasn’t until Kelly’s third season when the program started displaying noticeable improvement. Although they ended up with a losing record (3-4), all their losses came by less than a score and a combined 15 points. In Kelly’s fourth season, the offense exploded and the Bruins had a solid season (8-4) although they gave away a couple games. The problem was the defense was awful. For whatever reason, Kelly refused to fire his defensive coordinator Jerry Azzinaro. At the same time, he was entering the final season of his contract. While it was never publicly acknowledged most agree that UCLA conditioned Kelly’s contract extension on him finding a new defensive coordinator, and he did. This season bears the fruits of everything that happened since Kelly arrived in Westwood (not Brentwood, which across the 405 lol). It takes time to build a program from complete scratch but Kelly did it the right way and it’s now starting to pay off. One other aspect of Kelly’s tenure at UCLA is his ability to identify talent that fits his system and to develop that talent. UCLA now boasts an enormous wealth of NFL prospects despite Kelly’s underwhelming recruiting classes. This is a byproduct of his patience and willingness to allow players to develop. UCLA now has a foundation of success and the program is starting to click. The next step is for Kelly to take advantage of that success and show recruits how they could fit into his system.

The pac 12 is by far one of the weakest and worst conferences since USC dynasty ended. It is going to be hilarious watching UCLA and USC go 7-5 every year once they join the BIG TEN. Yeah - there's been some gutty wins in the past 24 years, but nothing like that 20-game win streak in 1997 and 1998. My hope is that the Bruins exorcise some demons against Oregon tomorrow. If the long arc of human history bends towards justice, then UCLA is overdue. Sure - Autzen is loud and the fans are right up on the field... but put Oregon behind the chains and down by a score or two and it can get really quiet real fast. Tried watching the video, but the background music was too annoying. Not good when you can barely hear the narration over the beats. Had to shut it off.

Could it be the Lincoln Riley effect? USC has taken a monster step forward which has to be an inspiration for the Bruins. Wish we were staying in the Pac-12.

Really bro, are you serious?! THEY HAVEN'T PLAYED ANYONE! Stop with this nonsense, we won't be hearing about them at the end of the year. Sick of people hyping up teams that haven't won a conference championship in the last 5 years!

Even if UCLA doesn't win the PAC-12, which I honestly think they have legitimate chance at doing, Chip still deserves the recognition of rebuilding this program from scratch.

@Will I'm not sure what ur definition of "wildly inconsistent" is, but I've seen steady improvement from UCLA every year, particularly from DTR.

They haven’t played anyone that good i they then Washington
@AUTZEN292 жыл бұрын
It’s not an impossible rise. Ucla will lose this weekend. They have played absolute nobodies with the exception of Washington and beat them at home. That was a good win but the rest of the games were trash teams In which you beat southern Alabama by 1 point at home! Oregon, Utah and Washington state if they play them are going to throttle ucla. I do think ucla will beat USC though
