As a UCLA fan who goes to games, I think a lot of outsiders don’t get how far the rose bowl is away from the campus. i've always thought that this is an underrated reason why UCLA just can't get off the ground in football, yet noone raises it (except you). unless you live in pasadena or the surrounding neighborhood out here (la canada, altadena, south pasadena etc.), going to the rose bowl is an all day adventure for you with regular l.a. traffic. for a 1230 kickoff say, you would have to leave from westwood no later than 1045 to be in your seat by kickoff. if you're stopping to get gas, money or food to smuggle in (coliseum food is way better than the rose bowl's offerings), you have to leave earlier. then you have to turn around and do it all in reverse to get all the way back home after the bruins lose. if the game ends at 400 let's say, you aren't getting back until 600 at the earliest, and that's IF traffic is o.k. and there's nothing else going on on your way home (USC traffic, dodgers, kings, lakers, accidents, etc.). the rose bowl is hard to get into and hard to get out of. UCLA home games are an all day thing, and a ton of people (students and fans) don't want to put in the time for that for a bad team, even when tippety top opponents like oklahoma comes in. i've never been able to figure out why they can't get a 50-55,000 seat stadium up and running on campus. they already own the land there (drake stadium makes the most sense to me for a site), have a zillion high roller alumni who'd be happy to donate i think. sure, the neighbors would raise a fuss, with bel air right on the other side of sunset and westwood right there) but if a school like baylor or SDSU can get a stadium up a running (and baylor's stadium is gorgeous too), there is zero reason why UCLA can't. i know their lease with the rose bowl has like 20 years to go, and there's no opt out, so i looks like they're screwed. to that end, i think they should tarp off some seats in the end zones near the top at the rose bowl with huge banners with their rose bowl wins, conference titles, retired #s on them to make the place a little more homey. 90,000 seats clearly aren't needed, except for big-game non-cons and USC. i drive uber part-time. on the day of the texas a&m game, i got a ride to take a couple to the rose bowl about 3 hours before the game. i was expecting traffic, but there was none. none. we just pulled right up to as close to the front of the rose bowl as we could get, they got their stuff out of the trunk, and went in. this was like, as i said. 3 hours before kickoff of your opener against a fairly high-profile opponent. also, i don't know how many 17-18 year old guys dream about playing at the rose bowl in 2020. maybe their dads do. but they don't. the rose bowl is part of the problem for UCLA, not the solution. this new AD they have needs to make getting an on campus stadium up and running, as high school kids see 50,000 empty seats on tv, and half the people who are there cheering for the other team and UCLA losing, and look elsewhere, even with all the obvious advantages that a place like UCLA (and USC for that matter) have. tv exposure. great weather. hot girls. a path to the nfl if you're lucky. but watching a game at the rose bowl on tv is borderline depressing. the empty seats are way more obvious during the day than at night. it's so quiet, in a way that the coliseum isn't, even when there's a small crowd at the coliseum too. the stadium is a bigger problem for the bruins than UCLA lets on, largely for political reasons. they need to get out of the lease with the city of pasadena, even if it's to go to sofi stadium out here for 2-3 years as a bridge to an on- campus stadium. it needs to be priority one.

sure these are legitimate reasons.. but ucla's temporary rise then fall is completely explainable by what was happening to SC across town. USC got hit so hard during those sanction years that ucla temporarily became the place to be in LA. Had usc brought in full recruiting classes all that time, ucla wouldve never pulled the talent that they did. USC is such a force compared to the rest of the pac 12... the entire conference ebbs and flows based on the status of their program. Programs like stanford, oregon, washington and ucla would have never rose to prominence without the demise of SC.

IMO UCLA's woes can mainly be blamed on the mediocre coaches that have been hired at UCLA for the past 25 years (Toledo,Dorrell,Neuheisal and Mora). Chip Kelly was supposed to be the big name coach with success that was going to turn the program around but has been a complete disappointment so far. Whatever magic Kelly had at Oregon isn't working in Westwood. It would be nice to see UCLA hire a coach that can do a lot with a little since UCLA doesn't consistently recruit elite talent. If UCLA wins the fans will show up at the Rose bowl. I was a season ticket holder in the late 90's( McNown era) when UCLA was playing and beating Texas,Alabama,Michigan and USC and came within one bad call (Melsby catch) from going to a Nat'l championship game. And finally, please bring back the powderkeg blue jerseys. They are UCLA's traditional look since Red Sanders and were worn in UCLA's glory era! (the 80's)

You provide information on teams most big networks or even channels wouldn't talk about. **I have some constructive criticism** You should work on your thumbnails. They aren't constant & honestly look sloppy sometimes with fonts & highlighted words like the Cam Newton video. It is not THAT big of a deal for me, but I can imagine a new viewer would skip or ignore your video just based off the thumbnail. Something as even a team's logo, or their star, without any fonts or if there is fonts, stay with that font. For example, for this video, a nice suggestion would be DOR and the Bruins logo in the corner.

I moved to LA in the late-90s and have been a UCLA fan ever since. UCLA has trouble recruiting the best (5*) players. I attribute that to two things. First, LA is not a focused sports City. There's way too much going on in sports and other entertainment. Big-time recruits and players want to be centers of attention and that's not going to happen in LA. Second, UCLA has no home games. LA to Pasadena is listed as 14 miles apart. In LA traffic conversion, that's a solid hour and, in prime traffic hours, probably more. Big college football programs have their stadiums conveniently located on campus. Even though I really like UCLA football, I can understand why it's not a big draw for the best players. Thanks for the video, Jason

I’m a UCLA alum, class of ‘75. I was a big fan of UCLA football for many years , but age (67) and frankly terrible football have sapped a lot of my enthusiasm for the program. I was initially excited but with reservations when Chip was hired. He was not successful in the NFL, but neither was Nick Saban and Bama has been dominant under his leadership. I didn’t expect Alabama like results from Kelly but his first 2 years have been horrible. Kelly will probably get 2 more seasons but if he fails to achieve any semblance of success then it’s back to square one and UCLA will have to hope there is some decent coach out there willing to take a chance of rebuilding UCLA football. I’m not holding my breath.

Kelly needed time to rebuild the team and culture. UCLA was the youngest team in college football in his 1st year and they only had 56 scholarship players - playing a bunch of freshman and sophomores. Of course, they were going to struggle. But now they have over 100 players and many are Juniors and Seniors w/ experience + they received some really good talent from the transfer portal + they now have improved defensive coaching. Now, they are a legit Top 25 team if they can stay reasonably healthy. -And the PAC 12 better watch out because they are now starting to recruit top-end talent - With USC just firing their coach - UCLA is in a fantastic position to have their highest-rated recruiting class under Kelly (if they can keep winning this year). Chip looks like he is in the later stages of the process of turning UCLA into a winner. We shall see.

It’s so hard being a Bruin fan. I’ve been a season ticket holder for over 10 years and been going to games since I was a little kid and they just can’t sustain success. California is such fertile recruiting ground but they get out recruited by SC Oregon Washington the Arizona’s and Utah year after year. It doesn’t help that the UC system hamstrings the amount that UCLA can spend on coaches and that revenue generated by the program has this weird revenue sharing with the rest of the UC system. On top of that as much as I love the Rose Bowl it has some serious flaws. You tailgate on a golf course, the traffic in and out is absolutely atrocious and the 7:30pm kickoffs are brutal, games don’t end until 11 or later then you get to sit in an hour of traffic just to get home. September is unbelievably hot with absolutely no breeze and November is almost unbearably cold. Doesn’t help that the stadium is 26 miles from campus which in LA traffic is a minimum 1 hour. They would be better off switching to SoFi stadium when that opens. It’s a couple miles closer and not in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

As a UCLA student, the rose bowl is over an hour (by BUS) away from campus. This means that you can't pregame, you can't tailgate, and you're stuck far away from your apartment/dorm. This, along with the fact that UCLA plays about half its home games before students get on campus, means that unless the football team gives us a reason to go watch them, most students have something more important that they should be doing.
@strudelalec4 жыл бұрын
@The Wretched Of The Earth I won't disagree with you about UCLA sports having fairweather fans. However, I'd argue that any organization/team with a legacy of success has them, and UCLA has the 2nd most national championships (in all sports combined), only behind Stanford, a title that we held until only a couple years ago. Students cheer on a competitive product. I've seen the bottom ring at Pauley sell out for Women's and Men's volleyball. There were a significant amount of fans for the gymnastics finals. Even a decent amount of people show up to baseball games despite the stadium not being on campus. Student attendance is influenced by 2 factors. 1 is obviously team success, but the 2nd reason is UCLA's quarter system. Personally, I love the quarter system from an academic standpoint, but the side effect of it is that students will have 1, maybe 2 days a week where they have a significant amount of free time. Academically, it's way less punishing for kids to go to football or basketball games if they're on the semester system because they just have more free time on their hands. And for what it's worth, I think UCLA is a better school than Duke academically, but not by much. Both are good institutions!

UCLA doesn't recruit African African athletes from lower income socio-economically challenged communities anymore ( recruit them from upper class suburban neighborhoods now......yes there are Black people who come from higher income households ) since the hiring of Dan Guerrero in 2001 as AD. MANY FORMER AFRICAN AMERICAN BRUINS HAVE IN FACT POINTED THIS OUT FOR THE PAST 20 YRS.

I remember as a kid when UCLA had top 20 Teams. I dont think USC beat them at all during that Decade. They are the Top Public School in the State, have some history with Football (moreso Basketball) The Campus is right by Hollywood, plays in Pasadena etc. Should be an easy sell to at least be a Solid #2 with USC. Personally i think The UCLA Fanbase is overall indiffrent when it comes to Football? Not saying they don't care, but I think they would be content with just being competitive and beating USC every now and then. Also....the AD that they had was God Awful. Plus, Chip Kelly. Also......playing in a Stadium that USC has more tradition in playing that is also an Hour away from Campus im guessing Doesn't help matters either

I was a Chip Fan boy for years but MC is a true Coach at Oregon. He's hiring Coaches that are Recruiters/Teachers/Father's which shows on the field. Chip is a "System" Coach and I have rarely seen interviews of his assistant coaches. MC is about the Team. Chip is about his system which is sad. I thought he was smart enough to surround himself with other good coaches/recruiters. Also DTR IS NOT A QB! He played QB in highschool for 1-2 years. Chip is trying to catch lightning in a bottle.

UCLA needs to lower their academic standard, it's too damn high! UCLA football needs to do a better job recruiting. The Rose Bowl, Pasadena Ca is a little farther out there lol. Westwood to Pasadena is about 45-60 minutes away, depending on traffic lol. UCLA football should just play their games out SOFI Stadium. Inglewood Ca. Westwood to Inglewood is just 15-20 minutes away, depending on traffic.

Mora was just bad at player development. He had some talented guys but beyond a few elite players he wasn't able to develop the overall talent. We had the same issue with Todd Graham, got off to a good start, had a few good recruiting classes in a row and then our defenses collapsed because the talent wasn't being developed and was coach poorly. You would think with Mora's NFL experience he would have been able to develop talent a little better but it didn't happen.
@f430ferrari54 жыл бұрын
I think you have to look a bit deeper as to why the talent didn’t develop. The pattern I saw which many bad football programs do is play too many true freshmen. You go back to Mora’s years and he would play guys only a couple game but burn a year of eligibility. You go back to the 2013 season and Mora recruited 5 linebackers including Myles Jack and all 5 played as true frosh. The others were Deon Hollins, Isaako Savaieana, Cameron Judge, and Jayon Brown. When the Bruins defense started to collapse you cold see the inexperience at LB. If UCLA had 2 or 3 of these guys as 5th year seniors then they could have brought veteran leadership and maturity. And there have the issue for many years of mediocre UCLA football. They are always seen as young and inexperienced because the stupid UCLA fan bass thinks true frosh are the answer to the problems but in reality they just compound the constant same cycle of 2 mediocre years by a true frosh and true sophomore then they give up on them. The O line has always been plagued by too many true frosh and the same with many positions. There are too many UCLA juniors who leave early and don’t even get drafted or are low round picks. This is a huge problem also. Canceling the 2020 season is a blessing in disguise perhaps. Now they have another year to get better and ideally guys will stay for their 5th year. UCLA doesn’t encourage players staying and contributing for their 5th year anymore. Go back to 1998 which was UCLA’s last Pac title and you will see many seniors on that time at least on offense. The defense collapsed because yet again too many true frosh.

@christophermartinez88534 жыл бұрын
The culture at UCLA the school will prevent it from ever becoming more than middle-of-the-pack in football. They're a once a decade Pac 12 contender, but nothing more. They just have other priorities and that's not bad. It's not "what happened to UCLA football," it's "any chance we come in second in the next 4 years?"

UCLA started their fall when they stopped growing the legend of Big school California out of the high school ranks. Too many examples going back into the 70's when didn't attract local talent; for example Vince Faragamo (sp?) why would he chose Cal Berkeley over UCLA. I can't speak for SF Bay area as I can Sacramento and Nor Cal: Joe Rose Yuba City- Dolphins went to Cal, Wesley Walker - Jets , Cal, Rogers out of Chico ? So much talent and they wiff, ignore or just get out recruited. When you look at how they failed over the decades, its easy to see how low they went. Just not enough history of local talent that achieved , thus low status. They are right in Hollywood, Disneyland, and So Cal beaches, they cant seem to capitalize. The list of coach's has been a list of "also ran" list of second rate guys that weren't top tier.

the GPA demand of new recruits changed UCLA and only have few players that can play in NFL.. Its why smaller schools are better now due to players with low gpa s can only go to as many guys from smaller colleges are getting drafted over UCLA.. Not sure but UCLA s first player to be drafted in 2020 is 3rd round, not sure so forgive my info. Josh Rosen was in 1rst round previous draft as he was known to be very smart with 4.o GPA but his play is sub par in NFL as teams giving up on him after just 1 year with those teams...

1st: When Stanford is up UCLA is down. Which school would you go to if you’re a lineman with a 4.0 GPA? 2nd: The quarter system is hard. They’re like a pro team for the first month in sept because of no classes. Then in October classes start and the quarter system is fast. Like catching up if you were in the semester system .3rd: Bad elements around the program. Gangsters who live in BelAir, communist and socialist teachers who only care about them being activist and not students. Just listen to the players, it’s not about football. The only formula to win is the Donahue or Bod Toledo way.
