I have to agree with Bosman about Super Metroid vs Prime, switching items and beams is significantly easier (even more so with wiimote and nunchuk). Revisiting areas is far less of a chore when you have access to both the level and world map, door types and all visible, rather than just a single area.

I think the most important thing about Super Metroid that elevates it against other games in the franchise is that so much effort and attention was putting into guiding the player through the game without saying a single word. That alone makes it a masterpiece. Too many games these days don't trust the intelligence of the player to learn how to play on their own, and, subjectively, I find that the older I get, the more I like games that leave me alone and let me play them and don't take control away from me, which also helps the game survive replays (Bloodborne and Link to the Past timeless greats for shutting up and letting me play).

Don's experience with black flag reminded me so much of my experience with Breath of the Wild. Exploring the open world. Fighting Lynols before you should. Going straight to the castle and beating all the bosses before you've come across them. And I actually remember the story, haha.

I enjoyed everyone's presentations, but the only one who I clapped for was Ben Moore. Street Fighter II Turbo is an absolute goliath of a game, a force to be reckoned with and a pinnacle of not just fighting games, but competitive multiplayer gaming. You could argue that without SFII there would be no e-sports. On SNES it stood as an example of how to properly port arcade games to console and it provided an amazing couch multiplayer experience before GoldenEye 007 existed, hell before the GoldenEye movie even existed. Street Fighter II Turbo absolutely deserves to be 2nd inductee. Nothing against Super Metroid, but _come on_.

Shine sparking is all you need to say to kyle as to why super is better than prime... and the screw attack, super metroid does such a good job of making you feel ultra powerfull by the end more so than any other game that i have played... not to mention the sequence breaking for repeat play throughs is way better in super metroid, plus i live all the hidden techniques by setting different beam combinations... not to mention the traversal techniques like wall jumping, mockballing and diagonal shine sparking that allow you to get items early...

... And, starting at 56:30, that is near literally what ended up happening all the way up to the last video that Kyle made for Easy Allies' Hall of Greats for Mega Man Legends before leaving them. Sincerely sad, and amazing, simultaneously. :) :( If the game is deserving, I hope that it gets in one day - possibly by Kyle, himself, if he ever returns. :)

Love the video! It was really fun! If I could make a suggestion, I would consider using approval or range voting for the scoring system (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Range_voting). Put simply, it's giving a score (say out of 5 stars) to each candidate. There's a few problems with the pseudo ranked choice method used that showed up here: Favorite betrayal: people strategically rank their personal favorites lower to give a better shot to a candidate they think is more likely to win. With range voting, it never benefits to lie by giving your favorite a lower score. Spoilers: similar candidates can cannibalize each other's votes. E.g. Bloodborne and Dark Souls make each other less likely to win. In fact, Ian essentially threw his votes away by putting 2 of his 3 votes on these games. If, for example, we had 2 Zelda games, it's possible that they both end up losing because they split the vote. With range voting, there is no spoiler effect. Range voting also encourages more divisive and interesting picks. For example, Super Street Fighter II wasn't anybody's top choice, but did well because it was a lot of people's second choice. We see that many of the Oscar winners lately have been "boring" picks because they use a similar ranked choice system. I made a couple videos on the benefits of range voting, and the mathematical issues with ranked-choice systems (including one vote per person): Range voting: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2Sqd3pmqL18n8k Ranked voting problems (math heavy): kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2eTi4uljbVpfsk Maybe it doesn't matter since they're all great games and most, if not all, will make it in eventually. Just some food for thought :)

Mega Man Legends IS One of the Greats. I am convinced there is an alternate reality that exists where more people played Mega Man Legends and the game was able to influence the gaming industry the same way a Dark Souls or a Metal Gear Solid did.

Ben Moore: Metal Gear Solid Ian Hinck: Castlevania Symphony of the Night Kyle Bosman: Tetris or Pokémon Red & Blue Brandon Jones: Final Fantasy 6 Michael Damiani: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Michael Huber: Resident Evil Brad Ellis: Final Fantasy 7 Don Casanova: I have no idea what kinds of games Don likes. Chrono Trigger? Maybe? Bloodworth: Blood is the racing game guy, but I don't think he'll pick a racing game. Half Life. It'll be interesting to see how wrong I am. :D

This video was super fun I look forward to future HOG ceremonies. Is this suppose to be a parody and I'm just being dense? Because these nominations were a hall of favorites, and maybe that's the joke. Pretend its a hall of greats say "its not a hall of favorites" and then everyone nominates there favorite game not based on how great it is.
@ethan_wethan
@ethan_wethan 7 жыл бұрын
Chris Pregot sure, everyone's nomination was their own "take" on the GOAT but they all looked past that to vote. You gotta see the ways that MGS changed the gaming world and appreciate its greatness. I don't think favorites got in the way of HOG. Also everything regarding greatness is opinion based so there's no avoiding it haha L&R
@Bromeostasis

Thats a good point and I agree mgs deserves to be there absolutely changed gaming. I think it might be better if everyone put up silly picks and gave funny speeches or everyone put up real picks and people just hacked them down like the lip sync part. But I could definitely be wrong it was just my initial impression "why is black flag on a hall of greats list"( which don't get me wrong was funny).

Is not about GOAT's, but just about great games. Of course they'll nominate their favorites but has to be some sort of agreement to actually win, and for that I guess it gas to be ar least good. Now to be fair, this "One of the greats" thing began as joke when some dude from S-Enix said that FFXV was going to be "One of the greats" before it came out. The allies just took it and ran with it, and it has been amazing

The fact that Kyle was even willing to try and make an argument against Super Metroid blows me away. Metroid Prime!? Nonsense! And I loved Metroid Prime! Metroid Prime got me so hyped about games that I broke my non-preorder rule for both Metroid Prime 2 and 3 and loved those also. But there is almost no experience in games like Super Metroid. That experience when the crocomire comes back as a skeleton and falls through the wall exploded my mind. That kind of beautiful breaking of video game tropes doesn't even happen much in games today much less considering it at the time. You beat the boss, the music slows, then it freaking comes through the wall at you again as a skeleton but just collapses. I won't ever forget walking into the abandoned ship filled with ghost entities and that primal sense of my own mortality. It wasn't just a character on the screen it, I was part of that character and walking into that environment scared the living crap out of me. Not once did I have that same kind of experience in the Metroid Prime games. They were fun video games and I enjoyed them but they were so thoroughly video game-ish the experience was filtered. Super Metroid was an experience that pulled you in an unforgettable way. That sense of isolation though! And when you run into the animals that teach you tricks you can do with your suit! What an insane and interesting tutorial. Metroid Prime not even close baby!

@Bosman - I went and played Mega Man Legends on Friday night. It's been on my backlog for a while, and you pushed me over the edge to play it. Now I can honestly say, this game is NOT one of the greats. It had some neat concepts, but holy cow this might be my biggest gripe with a games controls, ever. I almost quit on the final boss, just because it is so hard to control Mega Man and get him to do what you want. Even when you get a groove going, you need to get a little lucky with your circle strafing because god forbid you get knocked into a wall and can't see or do anything. It's almost like being stunlocked to death. That's not even mentioning how you can't Lock On AND move Mega Man at the same time... That said the character art was good (environment art was not, even for its time), the faces were good, the upgrades were interesting (though overly priced and grindy), and the easter egg after the credits was worth my 5 hours with the game.

oh i feel bad for bosman, the instant dismissal from most of the allies... I think kyle should bring it back another time, and the allies should play it... If you have ever seen Danny O'dwyer's podcast a tournament of lies, where they rank games against each other... If majority of them havent played the game that is submitted by the viewers, they put it in purgatory and they go away and play the games, and add them i the later weeks... i think if legends is a recurring entry by bosman this needs to happen...

Kyle, since nobody here managed to make a case for it, here's why I think Super Metroid > Metroid Prime. Super Metroid told a simple but moving story and it did so without any words. There's a text crawl before the game even starts that sets up the backstory, but once you're caught up and start playing this story, you get to piece it together by yourself. When you kill Ridley and go to the back room expecting to find the baby metroid, all you get is a broken jar. You figure out for yourself what that means. You don't need Samus to say, "Broken metroid jar. Perhaps the metroid outgrew it and escaped. Scanning for traces... Go to Tourian to find the metroid." Metroid Prime has so much reading. It's not badly written, but it can be a real slog on repeat plays. Super Metroid is 2D. 2002 was still early for 3D gaming and though Metroid Prime did a fantastic job for its time of replicating the Metroid experience in three dimensions, it's not as timeless as Super. Doing a 180 degree turn takes too long in Prime, and the game isn't linear enough for that not to become annoying. How long does it take to turn around in Super Metroid? 1 frame. The movement doesn't feel as good in 3D either. Wall jumping in Super Metroid feels so damn good. Prime has no answer to this. And of course in 3D you can't see what's behind you, which sucks when you're surrounded by wasps. Super Metroid makes good use of its backtracking. I don't think you ever have to pass through the same place more than twice in the same direction, and it's always on the way to something interesting and with fun new powers that you're happy to play with in environments that were more intimidating before. In Prime you spend a good period of the game traveling from place to place finding those keys and it's pretty boring. Super Metroid has more freedom. The amount of sequence breaking that's allowed and even encouraged is astounding. The first time I ever played the game, I couldn't figure out how to get into Maridia, so I went straight to lower Norfair. Without space jump boots. I had to bomb jump up to the entrance and use wall jumping to get around. You can't unlock screw attack without space jump for some reason, so I had to use power bombs to clear all the blocks in your way in the hallway with the rising acid. And somehow I did it. I killed Ridley and made it back out in one piece and I'll remember that forever. Prime just doesn't really give you the mechanics necessary to sequence break like this. Super Metroid has a better story. I know I mentioned story earlier, but I want to talk about why it's better, rather than that it doesn't use words. It manages to make you connect to a very alien creature in a very short amount of time. By the final fight, you only have three experiences with the metroid: it following you like a lost child in Metroid II, seeing it in Ceres Station making cute little sounds and getting kidnapped by Ridley, and it attacking you in Tourian and then recognizing you and letting you go. And you still cry when it saves you from Mother Brain and then dies for it. And at the moment when you hate Mother Brain the most, you're given her own power to use against her and curb stomp her like an angry mother bear. For Prime I can't even really remember what the whole point of the story was. You crash land on a planet just like in Super Metroid, but instead of searching for a stolen creature you're just kind of traveling around. Why do you fight the titular monster at the end? I honestly don't remember. I love Metroid Prime. Its atmosphere is amazing and I'll never forget the music in Phendrena Drifts. But it doesn't hold a candle to what Super Metroid was able to accomplish 8 years earlier.

Great stream. I do feel a bit bad for both Huber and Bosman though. RE has some of the most iconic environments and moments of its time. Bosman just got shamed on his pick all around lol. RE remake would have gotten 3 from me though, easy. Also, I loved Ian's defense of abrupt endings--very poetic

The only thing that ruins multiplayer in GoldenEye is the lack of random respawns. Once you and your friends memorized the spawn points in each level the game was broken
