@@jokr7818 The comparison was just for the fuel, how about how dirty it is to produce oil rigs or power stations? Or how about where the materials come from to produce ICE cars and what to do with them at the end of their life? Do you really believe that continuing to burn fossil fuels is the best thing to do? Batteries and renewable energy production mat not be perfect but investing in them and improving them is obviously a better alternative.

@@jokr7818 what?? Have you ever owned an ice car? Have you ever serviced it? Clearly you have absolutely no knowledge or experiance of what you speak. I have run Ice engined cars for 50+ years and the amount of maintenance required, parts that have to be replaced, oils and fluids that need constant replacing. I currently run a PHEV as a taxi. At 164,000 miles my engine is like new. My battery is fine. Like all EV cars when mybattery has finished its life in the vehicle (after approx 250,000 miles) it will then be sold to be used in a home battery storage unit and have an additional 20+ years use before being recycled with between 95 and 98% reusable. I also have an old ICE car I used as a taxi. It has 284,000 miles on the clock. The amount of oil it uses both as fuel and servicing is immense, the amount of parts it needs to keep it running is just horrible. Also the ICE car now uses so much more fuel than it did when new. When it finally dies (next big bill) it will be replaced by a 100% electric car.

YEAH right. And the regulator is talking about a remote facility to switch off solar whenever they want to keep coal fired stations running at capacity to maximize profits. There is nothing, repeat NOTHING to be proud of when it comes to Australian politics and EVs and renewable energy or technology. Yes, we got the brains here, but fossil rules! Only way is to go off grid and I'm doing it for 20 years. Now days even powering an air con and 30-60km/day of transport. I can even top up my friend's Tesla. Australia is the only country in the industrialized world to not support EVs. On the contrary the weak AUD, taxes and special car duties (to protect what local car industry?) make EVs unaffordable here. To top it off they are thinking of a special EV tax...to compensate for loss of revenue from fossil fuels. Latest joke: Huge gov subsidy for a Toyota hydrogen research facility.....part of the plan to convert coal to hydrogen keeping the fossil fuel industry happy. A shame and just plain stupid.

@Chris Van Bekkum There is a lot of wind farm electricity most nights, so much so that, even as a domestic customer, you can get very low cost electricity (and even occasionally negative priced), as there is so much available and no one to use it - look at any the UK grid stat websites and see the "bath tub" drop of usage overnight. Plugging in EVs, especially if smart/timed actually helps the grid. Keep in mind even if the electricity was 100% generated from coal, its still lower emissions than using combustion engine. Our grid is getting cleaner each year, this is a very good news story, please keep an open mind

I live in Ontario, Canada, where we eliminated coal fired generation in 2014. We went from 25% coal and 11% gas in 2003, to 0% coal and less than 3% gas today. My E.V. is running almost as clean as can be. Another important issue to consider, is the emissions/particulates that ICE vehicles continue to pump out in addition to C02. These emissions are concentrated in the most densely populated areas where people are forced to breath in poison. Even if coal is your only source of electricity (nearly unheard of today), it is still better to run electric, knowing that the carcinogens are not being pumped directly into populated areas.

Cleaning up a large power plant is much cheaper and more effective than trying to clean up a small plant like a car engine. Anti pollution measures on a vehicle are especially difficult as adding weight requires running the engineer harder in order to have that additional weight around. This negates some of the cleanup effort. Some power plants process and sell the pollution removed from their effluent, ie the sulfer is valuable.

@@Jamesandkate well, it's human nature to search for data which supports your world view. Everyone is guilty of it one way or another. All things have pros and cons. Just look at hydrogen as a fuel source. Plenty of people praise it, mainly for the ability of refueling quickly and with one top-up go further than a current top-spec EV on a full charge. But sadly it currently takes about 3 times the energy to produce hydrogen. And from what I've heard, a hydrogen pump has trouble with refueling several cars after one another. And one of the ways to produce hydrogen isn't exactly CO2-friendly. While the other method IS indeed mostly CO2-friendly, it's also requires quite a bit of energy to produce. In short, neither battery or hydrogen vehicles are perfect, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

Even if all our electricity were generated from coal, running an EV would still be cleaner, due to the efficiency of generating, 'transport' and use of electricity. Don't forget the use of Cobalt in desuphrisation of fuel - something the skeptics always bring up in terms of battery manufacture. It's worth noting that EV's aren't new - they were popular in the early days of the car, some of the first cars being electric. The starter motor and lower cost of the Model T, saw them fall out of favour.

USA also, Billion$ in gas subsidies that could go towards greening our energy supply. But personally I ignore where and how my energy is produced since I have no control over it. That is controlled by the energy lobby and which senators get the largest packets of cash. At least the cobalt used in my EV can be recovered later while the much more cobalt used in refining gasoline is lost.

There will be enough wind, wave and solar to cope with the damand. Some gas power stations could be kept in reserve to meet peaks in demand. The cells of the cars themselves will be charged off peak and feed into the grid during peak times to smooth demand. Future generations of cars will have greater range and drivers will have fewer inconvenient stops at petrol stations

Don't forget, too, that those on the Octopus Agile electrickery tariff can be getting free power at times of high wind energy (or good solar output) when demand is low. Carbon-free generation with which to charge your EV🙂. Sometimes they are even paying the customer for units used! Also, those with Solar panels can take advantage of the energy these devices are producing. All these things can further reduce the energy cost of running an EV, so many EV users are doing better than the figures provided on this video

Interesting presentation. Good to see the total from crude oil to petrol/diesel fuel. It’s not clear what the average electricity generation graphs do about the nuclear power element. In the real world, those charging batteries overnight (say on ‘night rate’ tariff), a fair bit of energy will be from it, as most nuclear stations operate at ‘base load’; they don’t start and stop at the drop of a hat. Another minor comment: there are utility suppliers that cross-balance one’s purchase with their use of renewables over a period of time so as to claim that one’s supply is all renewable, so one could claim that the car charged at home is zero carbon if on that deal.

Remember, Crude oil is used for pharmaceuticals, plastics, 50% is gasoline or petrol, Diesel is about 35 to 40% if you take in aviation Jet Fuel, so only the remaining 10% can be used for everything else we need... now lets get rid of petrol, we have a huge issue with a waste product of the refinery process. Also Nuclear Electric isn't mentioned. Also, Solar P.V. panels on a house or business to recharge a vehicle is also an option - during the day and can be factored.... there are many ways to skin this cat....

Also worth noting that whilst the EV is far cleaner on CO2 it also isn't producing lots of nasty tailpipe emissions in the streets of our towns and cities for all the inhabitants to breath in. Local air pollution is responsible for thousands of premature deaths in the UK each year alone and much of this comes from transport.

To be completely fair, you need to add in the carbon footprint of the batteries that each example car uses. The C02 involved in the mining, transportation and manufacturing of batteries in these quantities is NOT to be ignored. I read recently that a 100D Tesla would take 10-15 years (depending on the electricity type, coal, wind, solar mix) to recover the C02 involved in the battery manufacture alone...Maybe "Plug Life" can comment?

One thing nobody ever seems to mention is that you can sign up to a zero carbon tariff and then your EV (almost) emits no emissions at all. There will always be embedded CO-2 in car manufacture, building renewable energy generation, transmission infrastructure and road maintenance but even this is falling as the grid de-carbonises. One thing is sure only renewables can give us a zero carbon future, fossil fuel never will.

You forgot to mention something very important: natural gas emits 50% less CO2 than coal (thanks to the hydrogen it contains), so just converting all the coal power plants to natural gas will already make a huge difference. P.S. Nice video :)

@dogphlap6749 4 жыл бұрын
I had not heard that before. Are you sure that is true ? Natural gas is CH4 so obviously contains a great deal of hydrogen but coal also incorporates hydrogen (perhaps a lot less, I really have no idea).
