I dont know about the specific history of the first boers, but like most migrations the first few expeditions would been made up pretty much exclusively of men, they would have taken local wives and after a few generations these people would have forgotten about their African ancestry. So i imagine sandra isnt the product of an extra marital affair but rather genetic atavism or a 'throwback '. Even though there's so much physical difference between the peoples of the world, each and everyone of us is a child of Africa.

Why are all of you completely ignoring Adriaan, Sandra's brother? He may be "lighter" but not by much. He is black like her. And compare pictures alongside Abraham, the father, the resemblance is absolutely eerie. He is a black version of his father, same ears, nose, eyes, facial structure, everything. Just the hair and skin don't match. So considering the brothers both took after Abraham (apparently, their brother Leon was white but also somewhat ethnic looking) and Sandra looks like the mother, Sannie, I would have to say most of the black genes would have to come from Sannie's side.

Both the movie and this video of Sandra Laings life, brought pain and tears to me. I am very thankful for my 2 years in Mthatha, South Africa, from 2001 and in being 'adopted' by a local family. They didn't test the DNA, they didn't have DNA tests back then. They only found out his blood type (which is what blood type tests are for) and both their blood types matched which merely means he COULD be her father, but so could a billion others with the same blood type. The only way to really find out is for her to get a DNA test with her brothers, but she won't do that. Oh well, until then I'm going to have to believe the fact that her mother cheated. The "white" father accused her of adultery and was a breaths away from divorcing her when the DNA tests came back..... He was the Father.... His Great Grandparent was African!...his family was 0_o at that relevation! The baby girl was a genetic throwback to his great grandparent! At age 10 she is actually adorable and looks to be built for modeling! No divorce occurred, still married, but the parents have to explain their daughter is NOT adapted! My boss LOLed when I asked him if the father had to sleep on the sofa for a few months after the DNA test proved his wife (bosses sister) did NOT have an affair!

Her husband was white. The point is, if they had children the child COULD appear 100% white. And that could have happened to one of Sandra's parents.

Why can't we just all get along. I said it before and say it again, only if governments didn't exist, neither would the vast majority of the problems in the world. The Dutch are saying, the BANTU people arrived shortly after they have. Some say, no that's not the case. The British saying there were first... god knows what happened in the 17th century. It would be so good, very good, if we could all just let it go now. I will never understand why the government back then didn't just share the territory. Such a giant place, there was enough for everyone... All we have is eachother. At some point soon, humanity is going to realize it.. xx..

Afrikaaners have gypsy ancestry with Indian folks as well. Her parents reminds me of John and Nell Wooden. Her father accepted her color but like Wooden didn't believe in inter-racial marriage within family.

+Davan Mani Right because in so many ways being in a mixed marriage is WAY worse than having a black child/being a black child in a white family. It would also be back for he and his wife and sons. They likely would've jailed and taken away everything they had unless they had lots of money and could pay the right people off. For him, he very well could have done it to save her AND the rest of the family, "because of Apartheid", like she said.

+Andrea John Wooden was born and grew up in Martinsville, Indiana. Klan country. His mom was German of Moravian Christians. His dad Josh was of Scottish ancestry. Though they were white but within the community, they were considered a mixed couple. Growing up in a farm, Josh got bad farm products, animals, and deals that forced them in foreclosure position? John was a great athlete in high school but was shy and withdrawn. He came across as sanctimonious. He was called the India Rubber Man for his play at Purdue University. It was meant as a respect but it was also a to keep his "thou shalt be more holier" attitude in control by questioning his ancestry. When he came back as a high school coach in Martinsville, parents (klan) didn't like his saintly ways and driving tactics to players. He cut A+ students who weren't athletic, paddled, and cut those who smoked. He had the same issues at Indiana State which eventually led him UCLA. He believed in God but white mob was his master.

+Andrea I wish Wooden would have been honest of why he felt that way to his players like Willie Naulls, Kareem and Michael Warren. But he wanted to pass for white while those two players took the brunt of being black without him protecting them. Yet, he wanted to advise their life?

If so many of you think you know Sandra's mother cheated then how do you explain her equally black-looking brother Adriaan? He may have been lighter but still looked black... and came out looking exactly like the father. Eerily-so in my eyes. Sandra just looked like her Mama. I only wish there was a picture of Leon, her "white" brother, around somewhere. Supposedly even he didn't look fully caucasian. Kids at school gave him the nickname "Jew".

I searched for her because I just read about her story in the newspaper today. Apparently her parents have black descandents ages ago. The black gene lay dormant for centuries, and by some freak of nature it re-surfaced in Sandra.

I'm African American and have European and Native American Indian ancestry on both sides of my family. I have a set of cousins who are African American and one looks like my Cherokee ancestors and his twin brother looks more like my African ancestors. A friend of mine who is African American has an Irish grandfather and her mother is Carribean but she looks like her mom and her brother has fair skin, blond hair and green eyes. The Laing's story is not uncommon here in the US.

@citizenjosefk I must agree. I felt the lack of DNA testing to be a compelling reason to doubt the legitimacy of her white parentage. Even if her Mom had an affair with an African man, the treatment Sandra endured is an unforgivable example of the polarization caused by South African apartheid and the damage it imposes on the human spirit.

I realize you guys think that the mother cheated but what about Sandra's second brother, who came after her? He also came out black but even lighter than she was. It was an even bigger shock to the parents. I believe the parents were hers and I think it's a beautiful thing that "black" children can be born to "white" parents. A miracle even.

Her mother was white and her father was they did testing to prove that her mother was her mother and her father was her father. some of her ancestors were mixed many many many generations ago but is very much so white, she was just the result of a throwback.

I totally agree. I am convinced her parents were likely both "white-looking Coloreds" as well. That is the best explanation. A person's "look" doesn't mean anything, it is all genetics.

I dont know about the specific history of the first boers, but like most migrations the first few expeditions would been made up pretty much exclusively of men, they would have taken local wives and after a few generations these people would have forgotten about their African ancestry, and any phenotypically 'African' looking people would be absorbed into the wider local population or as intermediaries between the two. I imagine Sandra isnt the product of an extra marital affair but rather genetic atavism or for want of a better word a 'throwback '. Even though there's so much physical difference between the peoples of the world, each and everyone of us is a child of Africa.

There was a town in somewhere in Canada that was set up by freed slaves who fought on the side of the British in the American war of independence, within a generation or two, irish and scotch migrants moved into the area, within a generation or two later the town was a 'white town' with a very small black presence. They werent forced out, murdered etc so what happened? Through mixed marriage and a conscious forgetting of their roots the ppl became 'white'. Even though Canada was not as racist as the usa, it was still a white society and it was more politically expedient to pass as such.

@Wonder021 I've already replied to inclark. Can you explain why the brother also looked mixed-race?
@MissLolaAnn
@MissLolaAnn 14 жыл бұрын
@harriettewinslow No, it's called throwback. Both or one of her parents looked white, but would have had a black ancestor. So, for example, one of their great-great grandparents was a white man who had a child with a black woman, then that child married someone white, and their child married someone white until the black gene was bread out. Throwback is when it suddenly resurfaces after a few generations. The parents weren't fully white, only mostly white.
@ReneeDreams

Please don't take this the wrong way, but that is not uncommon. A light skin person is still black. What you mentioned is just the difference of skin tone of two black people. Everyone knows two light skinned people can produce a dark skinned child and vice versa. It happens everyday. This discussion is concerning mixed parentage.
