Ancient weights would be very interesting. There are examples of stones, with the handle held by the "Bird Headed" figures on Mesopotamia carving. Often referred to as a "Purse". There is a lady on KZbin who has a video yet I believe there might be more widespread reference to these measures.

In a sense, a weighted slab of metal really is money by default. The uniformity of any object, whether it be these bronze rings, or something even simpler like the mass produced uniform clay bowls in Mesopotamia. Anything made uniform makes exchange and commerce so much easier. How much soup? One bowl's worth. If "bowl" is an accepted volume, we can easily get into credits and debts from soup. Let alone whatever else can fit in that bowl, or be compared to a uniform unit of measure (the metal rings).
@Troy-WeightАй бұрын
@@matthewreynolds2384 Correct as one criticism of DD’s position but it seems (perhaps inadvertently?) to go along with his deeper error - got from such as Ialongo - that “commerce” in the EBA rather directly resembles modern retail activity. (by implication - DD’s pics of modern coins etc etc). A correct understanding of the appearance of coins around 600 BC is that state institutions appeared that encouraged modern style commerce - as Herodotus directly says. Before then state institutions were more directed towards to elite extraction, with market style retailing suppressed in favour of tax and redistribution by religious authorities. Even the propaganda on this matter is archaic and complex. The misdirection in this video is taken from very recent work by Ialongo and his funders (the EU’s European Research Council but advised by the Federal Reserve Bank). However it broadly resembles the misguided account given by Aristotle, which I would trace to the influence if his employer - the plutocrat - Hermias.

Bronze Age weights? Yes please! Surely, those 'ribs' are just un-formed versions of the circlets? And therefore, if they weigh the same as a circlet, they were just the same value (???) I also know that 'manillas' definitely WERE used as currency in west Africa until fairly recently (websearch "manillas as currency"). These manillas (from the Portugese word for 'bangle') were essentially identical in form to the circlets in the video. So yes, I would definitely support the idea that these bronze age objects were used as currency, due to the fact that similar forms were in use as exactly that for centuries, until fairly recently.

To my knowledge, early money and ingots are somewhat interchangeable. Early money systems were tied to the value of the metal they were made out of, English pennies for instance were made of pure silver and a pound (lb) of silver was a pound (£) of pennies. The minoans, Sumerians and Egyptians all traded in copper ingots, so my guess is that these items served a similar function of being a useful tradable commodity, but much more transportable than a bar or sheet of metal.

The Hoops are clasps for closing a sleeve or cuff. The Rib Ingots are bits for a herd animal: like deer or goats, as to be harnessed. The Small spirals were the currency: and you would cut a spiral. Grains were also common, and as you know larger ingots were available in the south. Beads obviously held a value: and thus the spirals would be included in such arrangements. Yet the barter system was still in greater formulation, and currency was more of a ledger of stuff owed by or to a house of trade.

@@DanDavisHistory The bits for a horse are still brass today. A deer pulling a pulka would require a metal bit to prevent them biting through. As teams of deer would be used at times: they would be traded with or without the animals. Some of the Ribs still have teeth marks in them. A common practice was to remove two of the animals teeth to place the bit through. Check for animal skulls with missing teeth, or the common wear pattern of such a bit and tack.

@@johnhunt2390 Bits were often secured with hoops or rings used to hold the straps of the bridle. The reigns attach to the head and the rings, providing a direct control of the animal. The Bent heads of the rods are rational to fit through these rings and provide a stable connection which was then locked with another thong of leather and the reign head. The rings of a reign would be heavier than the closing hoops for the cuffs of a sleeve.

Surely flint was the first currency, it doesn't degrade with time (unlike food) it had universal value, and can even be split into smaller lumps.

Europe might not have been the peak of civilization in the Bronze Age, but we were well connected to it. The Bronze Age world was very "globalized", as in, there were loooong trading routes connecting large parts of Eurasia. And Europe was a part of this network.

This is great, and an underrated topic in historic discussions. I did my own research into money being created as a form of commodity vs. a form of credit, and in the end, it seemed to be more of a "gift" based economic model, that turned into credit (taxes) and commodities (standardized goods that can be traded by nations/tribes/organizations, instead of individuals). Over time, monarchies develop, anarchy and democracies take hold (workers' rights), and the systems balance back out, since-in the end-we are subject to the natural world around us. If the mythological structures of the Kings and their Kingdoms are torn down, what are we left with? Besides ourselves... This topic really makes me think of Tolkien's intention in Lord of the Rings. The Ring of Power was drawn from Germanic folklore, so it makes sense that the deep history of Germany is plagued by corrupt rulers who hoard their metal rings-all for the sake of power -🤔 A video on bronze age weights would be great! Whenever you have one-sixtieth of a second 😹

What a great video. Specially the end, where you comment how this system was stopped being used simultaneously in various locations and its connection with old weight systems. Also, how the weight systems could be linked to the current universal system.

I remember one of the characters in the book Atlas Shrugged says that money is a tool that we use to trade with one another. That's a pretty good definition
@gustafduell49482 ай бұрын
A better one i think is that money is work in another form. That is why we can buy others work with it and we get it from our work.
@VictorianTimeTraveler2 ай бұрын
@gustafduell4948 I definitely agree.
@gustafduell49482 ай бұрын
@VictorianTimeTraveler Another good thing with that is that it removes the abstractivity about money. Questions like what is money anyway?, or money does not make you happy, looses their lustre.

These rings as metal, could be considered money, as they have a large value. Bronze or iron rings, can always be blacksmithed into orchard pruning hook that are then blacksmithed back and forth to military spears, or military swords, axes, hatchets, halberds, adze blades, daggers, picks, ... So yes, these metal items could be considered trade items.
@brawndothethirstmutilator98482 ай бұрын
I wish we went back to a similar system for our monetary supply today. Coinage made from an alloy of valuable metals would solve much of our inflation and debt problems.
@Kannot20232 ай бұрын
@@brawndothethirstmutilator9848paper money were invented because metal money could not keep the pace with economy. For example you have 1000 coins and 1000 people, economy is working. Then you have 2000 people for same coins, you have 1000 people who poor because of lack of coins. Also you could have resources from your 16 century colonies or international trade, these resources need to be covered by coin, you can't use barter
@brawndothethirstmutilator98482 ай бұрын
@Kannot2023, The paper we use today is not money. It is currency. There is a big difference. In any case I never said anything about doing away with paper currency. I suggested we go back to placing valuable metal in our coinage (which was common practice as recently as the latter half of the 20th century). Fiat currency is a disaster.
