In this video, IM Alex Astaneh is sharing with you the classical bishop sacrifice, also known as the Greek Gift. It is named the Greek Gift because if you take it then you are in a lot of trouble.
The classical bishop sacrifice involves a capture either on h7 or in the case of black on h2. This move breaks the enemy king’s defense and allows the attacking side to launch a very fast attack. This bishop sacrifice has a frequent occurrence on the club level.
In this video, we will cover the most common examples of classical bishop sacrifices, where white captures on h7. Notice that these sacrifices work very often when the enemy king has very little piece protection.
In this video we will cover three motifs of the Greek Gift sacrifice:
In the first example, we cover a classical bishop sacrifice in its most conventional form with bishop captures on h7. Then a knight jumps in to g5 and the knight assists the queen.
However, sometimes you get a different type of position, where h7 is very well protected. In this case the typical idea is not available for the attacking side. Here it is very important to be aware of another concept which is the double bishop sacrifice. In the second example, we will cover the double bishop sacrifice, which is often connected with a rook lift.
In the final example, you will see the importance of not just having knowledge of the typical double bishop sacrifice, but of the second double bishop sacrifice. It’s a bishop sacrifice but not as seen on the g2-square, as shown in the second example, but rather on the f3-square.
Summary: There are three classical bishop sacrifices or themes that you should be aware of: The first is the very standard one where the bishop is sacrificed either on h2 or h7 and the knight jumps in to assist the queen. The second is the double bishop sacrifice with an eventual rook lift and checkmate with queen and rook. The final one is this twist on the double bishop sacrifice where the bishop first steps onto either f3 or f6.
After watching this video, we hope that you are much better prepared to both, meet the classical bishop sacrifice and prevent it when it works.
Hope you enjoy this video!

I got my ass kicked by this three times in over the board games. Now I have a better understanding and will have better chance of spotting it when it's coming. Lesson: look at the bishops before castling kingside :)

For two famous double bishop sacrifices see Nimzowitsch - Tarrasch (perhaps Nimzowitsch's greatest humiliation) and Lasker - Bauer. Easy to find on KZbin. Oops the second example *is* Lasker - Bauer. The third example is from the game Amos Burn - John Owen, Liverpool, 1884. Burn's 19th move was f3, *not* f4.

i plugged it in a computer and in the first position after Kg6 Qg4 black plays Nxe3 and if you take black plays Qxg5. How should you handle this situation?
