All, first off...thanks so much for keeping this review active. Still can't believe it has almost 35K views. But to correct myself due to a lot of comments on this one screw-up, I MISSPOKE ABOUT BIXBY'S SON'S DEATH. If I could change anything it would be that flipup (which I realized I messed up almost immediately after posting it). To give half-handed reason, I was so into what I was talking about (this show means a lot to me), that I got Bill Bixby's son's death mixed up with Eric Clapton. My apologies.

Drumdums I don't believe you misspoke, Bill Bixby's son did die in an accident while he was filming The Incredible Hulk. In the Season 3 episode "Proof Positive" where McGee was talking to his female editor about his encounters with The Hulk and they went to the plant where David was working and chased him until he changed into the Hulk. You never saw David's face and that was because that was the one episode Bill Bixby took off and he did it to deal with his son's death. Also, his ex wife was in an episode where she played a psychic and David thought that the Hulk killed a teenage boy. She did kill herself not too long after that.

Dell Frye was a character that was bullied and embraced the power and the strength of his creature while David Banner did not and I think that's the major difference between the two men. Dell went so far as to commit murder to get that power back and keep it. As for the series, it might seem dated but as far as Bixby's performance goes no one has played Banner Better. I don't think he ever received an award for his acting and if he hadn't then that's just down right criminal.

GESSO217 Good point. Both David and Frye lived tortured lives...but that's where the comparison ends. While David was focused on ridding himself of the Hulk...Frye was focused on reuniting with the Hulk.

It's a crime that Bixby never won an Emmy for Banner's portrayal. Mariotte Hartley won an Emmy for her cancer stricken role in the episode "Married," and while she was good, Bixby was very very good. Hartley's odd vocalizations of pain, as she neared her death in "Married," always seemed off to me... just bizarre. But when the hulk embraces her as she dies, protecting her from the storm... Another tear jerking moment. UGH.

There are some things you may not have not have noticed about this story. It functions as an homage to the Universal 'Frankenstein' movies of the 30's & 40's. Visaria is a location used in those films. Dr. Clive is named for Colin Clive, who portrayed Henry Frankenstein in 'Frankenstein' & 'Bride of Frankenstein'. Dell Frye's name come from Dwight Frye who played the assistant Fritz in 'Frankenstein' as well as other parts throughout the series. Elizabeth is the name of Dr. Frankenstein's love interest going back to the original novel. Even the look of Frye's creature could be said to be patterned after Boris Karloff's monster, with his long gangly arms & oversized head. You even get an angry mob attacking the lab while the flashing lights are going on!

After watching this episode again i just realized something. When the serum/vial is shattered, the transformation starts... What is awesome, and what i never realized is that, there was no "transformation music" His eyes have already started the gamma transformation but it's kinda delayed. What i feel is this may have been the first time he transformed through emotional stimulation (sadness) and not from an adrenaline surge. It was a slower transformation. The icing on the cake was when the Hulk finally appears, he has tears in his eyes (one down his cheek) and he was completely docile! Like this was a new experience for him (that emotion) Such a great (yet small) detail that may not be appreciated by the fans.

Too bad they cancele d the series; I feel it could ha ve lasted @ least two more seasons.

I couldn't agree with you more. I cannot explain the extent of my disappointment of all this new opportunity for Hulk, and he's a fricken CGI character? So completely disappointed!
@kendallrivers11193 жыл бұрын
@@jacquelynspagone4117 the thing about CGI to me is as great as It can look there's no replacing a flesh and blood person like Lou Ferringno who made you believe that The Hulk was real because he was. The real emotional depth that was portrayed was so much more powerful than a computer generated character.

I just found this video in my feed. I, too, was smitten with the old series, and particularly, with these two episodes. I was scared as well when I saw the creature for the first time (mom made meatloaf and green beans and corn the night it aired live). I was 10 as well. Dell Frye's hulk is really supposed to be Abomination. He was played by the same guy who did Swamp Thing and is, in fact, taller than Ferrigno (6'5 vs 6'9) in real life.

I wonder if playing Frye's creature is what got Dick Durock the role of Swamp Thing

The Incredible Hulk is my favorite TV show from my childhood. "The First" is definitely one of my favorites. I thought I was the only one that was scared shitless by Frye's creature. Cheers

Frye was a sadistic homicidal maniac. He was truly evil and the monster persona showed it very well. If that show was made today, he would not have just thrown those men through the wall, but torn their bodies to pieces.

I already knew the backstory of Bill Bixby's personal life when I saw this episode for the first time. Nevertheless, the acting made the story.

Thank you for this review. It was among my favorite episodes, also. I was always a fan of the show and so was my mom. She loved Bill Bixby. That's what was different about this show - it appealed to both children and adults. It wasn't the typical Saturday morning-type of superhero show. It had heart, depth and mature subject matter. Kenneth Johnson struck gold with it, by getting Bixby for the lead, and by using the premise from the show "The Fugitive", with David Jansen. I've always been a fan of Bixby's, ever since his "My Favorite Martian" days, and watched all his shows since. I was heartbroken when he died. I, too, miss him being in the world. He brought a seriousness to the Hulk series. You spoke of him with such heart, and I totally agree with you. I've just come across your review of this episode, and you've made me a subscriber. I hope you can do reviews for the other two-part episodes as well. The Kenneth Johnson-directed episodes were among the best. If you notice, Johnson seems to have an affinity for the old Frankenstein films, and incorporates elements from them in some of his episodes, namely the pilot ("Frankenstein") and 'Prometheus' ("The Bride of Frankenstein"). Thanks again for the heartfelt review and keep up the good work!

Great series and this WAS my favourite 2 parter. Dick Durock's lanky frame made such a good contrast for Lou Ferrigno's more muscular one as it doesn't get covered up by a bulky costume like it was in Swamp Thing.

The man who played Frye's creature was Dick Durock (also played the title character in The Swamp Thing). He was a little bit taller than Lou and yes it seemed they made him look much taller on the show! They went to the extreme with the hair, eyebrows, nose and teeth to make the creature scary as hell. Terrified me when I was a kid, but also made this the most memorable episode(s) by far of the TV show!

In the season 3 Prometheus premiere The producer Kevin Johnson made a commentary and asks if anyone had the mad magazine skit of his show. I saved it 5 years ago when I found it on the Internet and emailed it to him. As a thank you, he autographed his picture of him and Bill Bixby putting on the contact lenses for the 1st time, black-and-white photo that everyone seen online but he autographed his "Thank you to an incredible friend." I framed that photo and put it on my wall. I will never sell that on eBay. To be able to help someone who entertained me for we so many years.

My FAVORITE episode! I like it cause I always thought an EVIL hulk would be interesting and potentially very frightening! . . .. one who wouldn't just grab people and throw them through the air, like the regular HEROIC hulk did, but would use that strength and rage to REALLY DESTROY his victims. We're talking things like tearing limbs off and crushing them to death and the sort.
@DrumdumsOfficial4 жыл бұрын
Yes good observation. The evil Hulk scared the shit out of me. He would be great in a horror film.

When they started fighting with the table between them and tried to test each others strength. I remember that blew my mind because I was a kid and I never seen anyone with the strength of the hulk before. When they started twisting that steel table up. I haven't seen anyone commenting about it I think it's in part to. Who knows maybe I made it all up in my mind. I remembered really wanting The hulk to be stronger because I was kind of scared of this other guy.
