The second pilot was a great "unofficial" ending. It shows David succeeding in getting a possible cure, for his Hulk outs. It leaves the door open, it doesn't work, but leaves the impression it does. Maybe it was filmed that way, in case CBS didn't make it a series. I call it my favorite episode, as a real finale was never done.

This is the Hulk I will always love, kids today may roll their eyes but I can tell you as an 8 year old watching these shows at the time was mesmerising and absolutely epic, todays Hulk is a bit far fetched and his struggle just doesn’t feel relatable! We had so many great TV shows in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s proper entertainment for all the family, todays shows feel so dark in comparison!
@TheJayrockerr4 жыл бұрын
A little bit of trivia. Arnold Schwarzenegger, auditioned for the role of the Hulk. He had the build, of course. However, at 6’2”. He was considered “too short.” So he mentioned someone he competed against, who was massive (6’5”, over 250 pounds.). In the 1974 Mr.Olympia (The contest that was featured in the movie “Pumping Iron.” ). Who of course, was Lou Ferrigno.

@jackstrawjr29633 жыл бұрын
Yeah, The First was a great episode (or 2 episodes)...amazing amount of pathos in the scene where Del's creature destroys the cure causing David to break down in tears, even while turning into the Hulk. And the detail of the Hulk still crying after the transformation and unsure of what's going on, since he's not used to sorrow -- only rage. Great acting & writing!

The pupils turning white is still one the most memorable images in comic book TV and film. It's so effective in increasing the tension.

Yeah the intense stare right into the camera lens coupled with the music cue really grabbed me every time. Generally actors aren't supposed to "break the 4th wall" but whenever David did, it was like saying even the conventions of TV can't handle the power of the Hulk! :D

JasonMarshMusic. I remember a printed interview in TV GUIDE of how Bix hated putting in those contacts because they irritated his eyes. In extreme close up shots, it's evident that they did irritate and caused some discomfort.

This is something the Marvel kids of today should really watch although I suspect it’s probably not CGI-ish enough for them. Of course they used make up and actors. It works and it’s brilliant. This is a true incarnation of the Hulk and the best I’ve ever seen, and fondly remember it back in the day. Bill Bixby was the true American hero. A terrific actor of substance and quality. It’s so sad that he left us so early. And when he turns into the Hulk it’s terrifying. It really really is.
@1969EType4 жыл бұрын
@@StephanieLærkeAndersen I could not agree more... And I think of all the actors to play Bruce Banner/The Hulk since Bixby, Mark Ruffalo is closest. And yet, in many ways Ruffalo is still really just a cardboard cutout of Bixby's work. But, it's clear he draws inspiration from Bill Bixby. This has been said many times before about many legacy characters that get played by multiple actors and actresses...and it bears repeating...your first Banner/Hulk is your best Banner/Hulk. Any 10 year old kid who watches this before any other production would feel the same. Those of us who were there...know.

A little fun fact about the episode never give a trucker an even break you may already know, the chase between the semi truck and the red car was actually clips from Steven Spielberg’s Duel. They actually had the rights to that since they were both universal studios.

Such a great series. The eternal battle of David Banner and his struggle to get rid of the Hulk and prove his innocence. And even though he fears what the Hulk would do but doesn't realize the creature will not hurt people especially that David cares about. It's his primitive side of him. The creature early on scared the crap out of me because in the pilot, he looks like a freakish cave like creature. I got over this when you see that the Hulk is a part of David Banner so it doesn't hurt good people. It worked because Bill Bixby made you sympathize with him because he's cursed with this affliction he can't get rid of. Every time he gets close and fails , it's heartbreaking because he's still carrying this burden. Then you got Lou Ferrigno as the Hulk, a big brutish creature that really isn't scary. Then there's Jack Colvin as Jack McGee.The desperate reporter trying to prove the Hulk is real so he can push his way up in the business and not seen as a joke. He becomes obsessed with finding the Hulk. Great video. Hope you do one on season 2

I do remember that episode where he was trying to land the plane it was 3 minutes and 28 seconds. Because he was fighting it so hard. so that he would not crash the plane. Once the plane was landed the hawk took over and he smashed to the cockpit and ran off. but that was the longest transformation that I'd seen on there because he had actually fought with great will to keep the whole cat Bay

Interesting note: during the filming of Terror in Times Square, people were telephoning the NYPD gibbering in terror that they'd seen the Hulk. It was freezing in January or February and at one point the scantily clad and barefoot Ferrigno stepped into a shop doorway between takes to try and grab some warmth and a middle aged lady who was buying clothes nearly had a heart attack. He tried to placate her, but she howled in terror and fled. She contacted the police who rather bemusedly asked her what he did and she replied, "He mumbled at me and got green on my coat!"

Definitely rather him than me. New York in winter is not a good place to be wearing shorts and the shreds of a shirt, even if you are built like a brick shithouse. I as well grew up watching the show on occasion, but really in syndication re-runs. I really want to watch that pilot episode now after hearing you speak about it. Sometimes, pilots can be really poorly reflective of the overall show in retrospect, and so, it's great to hear that this pilot started off strong. There are many superb episodes throughout the whole series, but I guess I really need to dig in to watch it more extensively. We had the TV movies videotaped off of NBC, and so, I watched those more often since they were readily available. They were certainly a bit cartoony considering the attempts at backdoor pilots for a Thor and Daredevil TV series which never materialized. Keep up the great reviews, Mercy. I'd like to hear more about your favorite shows. I hope to review the new Quantum Leap Blu-Ray set, if I can manage the time.

True! A lot of the time the actors haven't figured out their characters yet in the pilot, and it can be awkward going back and watching them, but I think it's safe to say Incredible Hulk peaked with the pilot. The TV movies definitely shifted in tone, mainly because of Kenneth Johnson's lack of involvement. I just recently found out Daredevil (Rex King) starred in Street Hawk, another classic show I need to review soon. And thanks! I've already taken a look as some of my favourites like Hardcastle & McCormick, MacGyver and Airwolf. A-Team, Magnum PI and many more to come! :D

As for the MCU Hulk movies. Well the first one with Eric Bana suffered from too many unimportant subplots-Banner's relationship with his dad-which has nothing to do with the Hulk's origin. The second Hulk film was much better and was much more in the tone of the tv show and comic book.

This is a great review of my number one all time favorite TV series The Incredible Hulk. And the first season is my top favorite era of the show, despite how short it is. Bill Bixby was my childhood idol and hero. I never got to meet him, but I have had the honor of meeting Lou Ferrigno quite a few times over the years. I must respectfully disagree with you about Never Give a Trucker an Even Break. Believe it or not, that was the very first episode I ever saw of the Hulk back when I was 6 years old in the spring of 1978 on its original broadcast on CBS. My first Hulkout was in the phone booth. While this episode might be a weak entry, it's a personal favorite for me since that's what turned me into a lifelong Hulkaholic. Plus, this episode has also made me a fan of Duel, the movie whose stock footage from which this episode was written around. Also, the lady trucker Jennifer Darling is best remembered as Peggy Callahan from the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman series. If there's any weak entry in this season, I felt it was Earthquakes Happen. David Banner attempted something he was weak at. Impersonating a power plant inspector and getting his cover blown. And in this one episode, David's attempt to cure himself triggers an earthquake and gets himself, the two plant directors, a hot headed worker and a guard trapped underground. Otherwise, I consider the first season completely stinker free. Another episode I highly recommend is Trucker's predecessor The Hulk Breaks Las Vegas. This is an excellent story, and in my humble opinion, this is one of the best episodes when it comes to David Banner's near miss encounters with Jack McGee. I love everything about that episode. The second pilot, Death in the Family was my second viewing after the Trucker episode as CBS rebroadcast it the following week. While the actual pilot movie tells the origin of the character (s), the second pilot Death in the Family served as a pilot that would show us what the upcoming weekly TV series would be like. I love it just as much. I loved the more fuller and gradual Hulkouts where see David in mid change which was scarier than his mid change scenes when changing back to normal. And Ted Cassidy was doing the Hulk's growling sounds. For what it's worth, I never saw the actual Incredible Hulk TV pilot movie until my teen years. Since I first got started watching the Incredible Hulk at the tail end of the first season, it's the only season I saw that was out of chronological order. But it's still my favorite part of the series. And I still like to watch the Incredible Hulk DVDs on Friday nights. Just like in the old days. That's my 2 gamma radiated cents.
