Nah, definitely a human time traveller from the future preparing us for an alien invasion. SpaceX so we can have a secondary base on Mars, and a network of detection satellites. **Says into camera:** "The fact that this video feed looks like one booster played on two different screens is beautiful." **Pulls all nighter to render and upload video.** **First comment on KZbin:** "The video was one booster played on two different screens." LOL . I'm OCD about Smarter Every Day episodes being correct. This will bug me for a while. Wait... I guess technically I was right? I'd love it if educational content had some form of peer review editing process. Anyways, the fact that you're still reading this means you had to click "Read More"... which also means you're the kind of person who isn't scared of commitment on the internet... which ALSO means I have a 31.7% higher chance of convincing you to subscribe to The Sound Traveler. I mean, you're down here reading the bottom of this comment, holy cow you're like a blood-oath covenant level commitment kind of person at this point. But seriously. If you're into the KZbin subscribing thing I would appreciate it if you check out my little side project. I don't know why I like it so much but I do. Here's the link. bit.ly/Sub2TheSoundTraveler

Orion Riley I don't think they did. I watched it later in the afternoon yesterday and in both videos you see the flames of a booster off to the left which is slightly lower than the one with the camera. They fired at the same time even though they were supposed to be separated by a few seconds. Unless they went back and fixed it after that even.

There is a possible solution. Tactile transducers might nail the even deeper frequencies below what the best high end headphones could deliver. The problem is you would need a 3rd channel and a special recording device that is sensitive to deep vibrations and ground energy waves. Sound engineers have been struggling with this challenge for decades.

I noticed that when I saw the 2 landings pads and the supposed 2 different cameras aiming towards the same one, the same way. Even in theory you want an off-set so you don't confuse the instruments reads (e.g, radar, and positioning systems), so the perfection shown in the cameras was destined to be the same stream.

Having worked out at Kennedy Space Center, I was able to experience some rocket launches very close up. I can verify that this is closest thing to actually being there out of any other video on KZbin I've seen. The only thing it is missing is the feeling in your chest. Every one of those pops and cracks you hear in the recording (which really start getting intense around 3:54) you feel not only in your chest but you feel as though your whole body is vibrating from the sheer intensity of the sound. I highly suggest that if you have the means to see a rocket launch up close like this DO IT. It is an experience that will stay with you forever.

I know it is something that happens all the time, but it is amazing how you can see something and then hear it a few seconds later. You're receiving information about the same thing but the delay is fascinating when you really think about it. You're listening to something you watched happen 20 seconds ago. You're literally listening to the past. Almost like some extension of time travel.
@konmillion

I know it spoils the effect but I decided to google the distance between the launchpad and the building then calculate the time it would take for sound to travel the distance so I could sink up the audio for that section. It gives an awesome impression of the power of it.

A camera on one of the boosters failed. So yes they were showing the same booster on 2 screens. You can check this buy looking at the dirt on the screen and the fact that they both landed on the same pad. There were 2 landing pads painted differently. The 2 screens were of the booster that landed further away from the screen as you can see the paint on the closer one landing pad was different.

Actually, the live feed from the two boosters looked identical because someone messed it up and just duplicated the image. There are three dead giveaways that it's the same footage: 1) a speck of dust diffracting the light on the camera lens in identical position on both views, 2) the landing pad being identical, even though one booster landed on a white landing pad, and the other on a black one, and 3) the boosters did not land at the exact same time, but one landed about a second before the other. In a video later uploaded by SpaceX you can see the footage from the two boosters and it's quite different.

Silverlan17 in the main feed (not in destins vid) you can see the southern rocket ignite at the top of both screens. In destins vid you can see that one rocket (southern is guess) lands a bit before the other one. Looking moisture/dirt appearing on the cameras at the same time, how they both land on the same pad in the vid, and seeing the other rocket ignite in both feeds, I'd say it's the same view duplexed onto the screen.

at 6:20 approx, the boosters have turned on their grid fans so that's the third sonic boom and we can actually hear the third sonic boom at 6:48 approx, by this you can actually calculate the distance of the photographer's location from the rocket landing position. Agree, I only hear 6, with what seems more like clipping/overloading of the mic on the 2nd booms of each 3 making it sound a bit off...

Watch the extended video on the sound traveler channel, there you have the 10 booms. Moreover it sounds more natural there. Maybe the sound in this video is somewhat edited, or maybe a render/conversion failure? kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmjYgmuFjM6bm68m5s

Awesome recording! I saw the last shuttle launch in 2011, and the sound is my post powerful memory. Yet when I try to explain it, people don't really get it. This does the sound justice. Awesome.

Was that a night launch?
@robglassey4517
@robglassey4517 6 жыл бұрын
Daytime. Seen from Titusville. Unfortunately the cloud was fairly low and the shuttle disappeared into the cloud quite soon after launch. But the sound... it just kept building louder and louder even from that distance. I guess those solid boosters are pretty loud. Together they produce more thrust than the entire falcon heavy. I did see a Delta 4 night launch (with 2 solid boosters), which was also quite impressive, but more of a visual spectacle, with a bright plume and booster separation.
@johnhernlund539
@johnhernlund539 6 жыл бұрын
This rocket only lifted a car, the shuttle boosters lifted the entire shuttle along with its payload. Heavy vs. mega-ultra-heavy. Still, this is quite awesome!

I imagine its similar to seeing a top fuel dragster run up close. Its such a physical sound. It shakes your body, the ground under your feet, and the air around you in such a way thats almost indescribable. Then theres the heat off the headers from the white flames.

5:08 it actually is the same feed. If you look at the different landing zones, they are painted differently, but in the video it's only landing on one of the different paint jobs... In the live stream they also said that it is the same feed but representing both boosters.

@SahilP2648

What I think most likely happened was that after launch, one of the side boosters lost its transmitting capability for some reason, so they had to duplicate the video feed of the side booster which was still transmitting. After both the boosters landed, they took the video out physically from the side booster which didn't transmit, edited the video and uploaded the corrected version.
@yonerboner7424
@yonerboner7424 6 жыл бұрын
The video from the boosters was actually two copies of the video from one of the boosters (you can tell because they both land on the same pad). They corrected it in a later video and overlayed footage from the other booster as well.

You could also see right after liftoff, because the cameras were both facing center core, but the land/sea line was not mirrored.

it was pretty funny because the announcer also pointed out how similar they looked saying they were actually different boosters xD
@kkeller
@kkeller 6 жыл бұрын
That was my observation as well in that it was duplicated. Possibly accidental, but they were too similar to not have been the same due to one not being mirrored. Add to that the two pads are not painted identical but was the same in the landing video.

Funnily enough, the broadcasted video feed of the two side boosters actually WAS mirrored during the live broadcast... they corrected the feed after. It confused me when seeing it for the first time, because you see the exhaust from a booster "above" the booster on both screens, and they seem to land on the exact same pad.

Heh, we re-watched the launch that afternoon after talking about how the hosts seemed to bullshit their way through the excuse for losing video signal of the landing, and the guy going "phheeeww" at the moment that landing should have occurred... We saw the live feed still visible in the background, which shows the smoke clearing and no rocket on the pad. Pretty funny. Like, come on guys, just acknowledge it and make the crash landing part of the show!
