I asked Mark the same thing basically - it's a good question! He said a lot of it is knowing how to mentally support the players - some kids need someone to help them before going into a big match, while others might want everybody to back off. The rest is technical stuff - so, for example, he might advise changing up a stacking style if a technique isn't working. He also told me that sometimes they'll watch a stack in slow motion to see where the pain points are. -Phil

Eh, I think calling this a "sport" is a stretch, but using equipment designed for it is fine. The swords used in sport fencing are a long way removed from the actual weapons used during the renaissance and pre-modern eras that they're supposedly based on. This is just the same thing.

One reason why they have holes is so that air can escape from the cups as they are stacked. If they didn't have the holes they couldn't be stacked at all.

I've always found this sport fascinating! I remember seeing infomercials in the mid-2000's (when I was a preteen) selling cups. A few friends bought some and we played with them. It wasn't long before we moved on from the fad, but I never forgot about them. All these years later, I'm glad to see cup stacking is alive and well!

I've been stacking for about 5-6 years now and this video describes the sport perfectly. I loved the last few points as well, because it's so true to what a satisfying stack is. Some stackers, like me, are also really picky about the sounds of cups when they're made with different types of plastic and I've spent hours combing eBay and Craigslist to get certain types of cups. It's a little bit ridiculous, to put it lightly.

We ran into a lot of amazing sport stacking channels while researching this video - here's a few: Zhewei Wu: Awesome stacking, including a lot of big names. Includes GoPro Stacking! kzbin.info/door/sAFx6q22Vf4C3IteoJopmQ William Orrell: The lion of Carolina (OK, we made that up). But he is almost certainly the top U.S. Stacker, and he has awesome cups. kzbin.info Hyeon Jong Choi: Vox is US-based, but stacking is international. Hyeon Jong Choi is an amazing South Korean stacker who's also younger than the ones we featured (which is common in the sport). kzbin.info/door/l9a3kL7JgpDWmAdhnszJgg Josh Hainsel: The new 3-6-3 record holder! kzbin.info WSSA: The active channel of the sport itself. kzbin.info Again, this is just a very small list and we'd love to know what we missed. -Phil

When I was a kid, I got really into cup stacking(around 2006-2010). I went to tournaments and even made it to the top 5 once against some of the top cup stackers in a couple states. I remember doing tons of talent shows and people watching in awe as I moved the cups at what seemed to them as insane speed, but to me was way too slow to compete in anything. I unfortunately had to stop because it stopped becoming fun, because I felt I was pushing myself too hard. I watched this video just to see how far cup stacking has gone, and it has definitely changed quite a lot in the past 10 years. When I started there was only one style of cup, the timers only went to hundredths of didgets(not thousandths), and the record for the cycle was somewhere around 6 or so, and KZbin was not nearly used as much, mainly because it was rather new. I’m only 18 and I feel ancient in this sport. It’s really addictive once you get started in it, so if your young and got time to kill give it a shot!

Because men dominate in sport stacking. I don’t know the biology but it was completely unfair and discouraging for women who stack to have to compete knowing that biologically they didn’t have a chance. I remember working at that address mentioned (which hasn’t changed in quite some time) when I was younger because my mom was one of their first employees. My brother and I would practice in our off time and they would even pay us to travel around the country to teach and demonstrate at schools and convention centers. Even at that time about 15 years ago it was still a debate whether or not it was a sport. Either way we did it because it was fun and we were getting payed. As for the long term aspects of starting at a young age, my brother and I became ambidextrous rather quickly and were soon playing hockey, baseball, and lacrosse both left and right handed. Thanks for the video, brought back some good memories.

This is the same as speedrunning videogames, but this one I don't understand. Doing the same thing with the exact same formations doesn't get really repetitive and boring? I can understand speedrunning and rubik's cube competitions since those have more things going on, with random elements, but can someone explain how this doesn't get dull overtime?
@alquinjulesguzman4690

Aleksander for my experience playing it. feels nice to have them stack *smoothly*. but I can see why you say it can be boring because of there not much of a pattern or possible other change in the game.

Speedrunning has rules. And it also has laws, and the trick is finding ways to circumvent those videogame laws ("I shouldn't be able to go through walls, but exploiting something I can run past it"). However the rules and laws change from game to game and even between playthroughts. Having the same few (few, as in fewer than other sports) rules all the time doesn't make it boring?

Tampa Bay Speedsolving is not the same as speedstacking. Speedsolving requires a lot more skills, to be a world class speedstacker you just have to practice one motion a lot of times until you can do it fast. With cubing, world class cubers memorize hundreds of algs, plan out their solve before starting, and while solving need to look ahead to optimize their move count. Both are pretty useless in the real world but how are those the same thing.
