In this episode of Expert Voices, Grégoire Billaut dissects Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Black and Jazz, two monumental artworks created at the height of his success. In 1986, Basquiat is a superstar - he is represented in exhibitions across the globe, including Japan. He begins to experiment with wood, as seen in the artworks Black and Jazz - two works that are considered to be pinnacles of this fruitful period in Basquiat’s life. Black and Jazz are highlights of New York’s Contemporary Art Evening auction (28 October 2020, New York).

For people saying his art is bad, that’s not how art works. In art there’s no good or bad, art is for expressing feelings and emotions. If you don’t understand it or you just don’t like it, don’t comment anything and leave so people who like it can enjoy it. You can put ketchup on a canvas and people would still buy it for example, the artist could’ve been sharing there love of ketchup, it’s still art. Even though it might not look good to most people, the other people can find connections with the art.

@Rollo Larson yes I get that but criticizing and deconstructing or tearing down are too different things. Criticism is helpful feedback for the artist, but deconstructing is no feedback, just straight talking trash, which can also manipulates someone’s view or opinion on the art and the artist. Read the comments, they are bashing his art, not criticizing anything.

@Rollo Larson Look all I’m saying is critique the art, stop being deconstructive, we already have enough hate in this world. Also don’t bash the artist because you or someone thinks it’s bad or whatever, the artist is getting paid and acknowledged for expressing himself through art. I didn’t come here to have a unnecessary/unwanted argument about it with you, but I still expected it.

I'm a fan of basquiat also. I'm just perturbed about the Glorifying and analytical constant. When there are thousands of others doing the same art.... not taking away from basquiat...place and time was his benefit..

@louhak5592 Have you considered that the REASON there are thousands of artists doing the same art is BECAUSE of Basquiat? The reason he is so important is because of the breadth of his influence on the trajectory of art history.
